The director of this movie is Zhang Yimou, one of the most well known directors in China. He directed Raising the Red Lantern, Hero and House of Flying Daggers (and the Universal Beijing attraction/show has an intro featuring him with Spielberg). The actors/actresses are also very well known in China with the likes of Deng Chao, Sun Li, and Guan XIaotong (to name a few).
