Ireland head coach Andy Farrell spoke to the media following the announcement of his starting 23 to face England in the Aviva on Saturday.
As part of the build-up, his son, the English captain Owen Farrell, has been caught up in a storm surrounding a rescinded red card from the previous week; a decision which will be reviewed by World Rugby early next week.

'Watching the world hating on his son'? Really? That's how you see this situation? It would be interesting to see how he would react to Bundee Aki performing the same manoeuvre on his son at the weekend. I'd venture to suggest that 99% of the rugby world agrees that Farrell should have been punished for what was quite clearly a red card offence yet somehow expressing that opinion is seen as 'hating on him'?
@readesiun988
@readesiun988 Год назад
@@TheShireshark Like it or not Owen Farrell is number 1 the captain of the most hated team in world rugby. He also has been getting away with this shoulder charge tackle through his whole career. Most people see this as a dirty tackle. Which has turned people against him. Should he be blamed for the officials not doing their jobs and stamping it out, no, but because it has been ignored for so many years, people grew to hate the thug element that Farrell portrays. Finally the match officials did their job and he was red carded and most people thought, yes, a well deserved red and about time somebody nailed him for this shoulder charge. To be overturned and again walk away Scot- free. Again, is it his fault for getting off, probably not, but do people hate on Farrell, yes they do. To pretend otherwise that the same uproar would happen if it was not Farrell is putting your head in the sand. I also think that because he is one of the best fly half's in the world that people question why with such skills does he have to be so dirty and aggressive.

Classy answer Andy to a ridiculous question on your son. Handled deftly. And he’s correct the circus has been disgusting, so it’s probably been hard for Owen. He just reacts to the rulings, he’s hand tied. Handled badly by WR and the judiciary all round. Not saying Owen should not be held accountable, it’s a bad tackle in this day and age, and he’s previous for them - but the pile on has been quite horrible to witness, and the administrations involved have absolutely compounded it tenfold.

If he didn't actively go out and try to take people's heads off he'd be ok. Unfortunately he has been a leader in a team that has cheated it's way to many titles and is a consistent danger to other players. I'm sure he is a nice bloke but in the game he has been almost everything that has been wrong with English rugby outside of the RFU.
@Alex-mj5dv
@Alex-mj5dv Год назад
@@networkn it’s rugby mate. If you’ve played to a high level - mid national league even - you’ll know that banging your head against the floor in a ruck or during a tackle is the biggest head knock you take. Steve Thompson said himself it’s the training weeks that added cumulatively for him, not matches. HIAs are important, concussions are also, but that hit from farrell wasn’t the worst we will ever see. It’s funny watching the SA fans up in arms about this, probably due to the tackle on AE years ago. The famously uncompromising springboks? Who did genuinely take people’s heads off? Stamping, eye gouging ?! Shcalk Burger, Bakkies Botha (the worst), it’s hilarious hearing it from them.

Funny, he mentions what a hard time his kid is getting, but no condemnation for the serially repeated thuggery his son has become rugby world renown for, and the harm he has, or could have caused. Get a dose of reality. He’s not going to publicly slate his son and he hit the nail on the head by saying his opinion doesn’t matter. This has been a circus. Anyone in Owens position would appeal as if he doesn’t, he misses the World Cup. Andy rightly points out that it is the governing bodies that have caused this circus by rescinding the red card when outside of the match Owen has done exactly what any other player would do and captain would be expected to do.
@networkn
@networkn Год назад
@@RU4IRIgames of course he wouldn't publically slate his son, but equally he shouldn't do the opposite either. OF has caused this circus but being a serial repeatedly being a thug. @@networkn No he hasn’t caused any circus - he’s just a player doing his job. It’s the buffoons who tried to let him away with it that aren’t doing theirs. The man has made 10 bad tackles in 300+ matches and you’re slating him like he’s got Bakkies Bothas record sheet. He’s probably been on the receiving end of more bad tackles than he’s handed out.

I don't think Andy should have been asked about his son. It's a kind of impossible situation for him, but he answered graciously enough. I think some of the response from media and fans has been over the top. However, to some extent at least, OF has drawn this circus on himself with his repeated cynical approach to dangerous tackles. We've seen it again and again, and he has got away with it at times by feigning injury. Also, as England Captain, he refused to wear his silver medal after losing the 2019 WC final. That's pretty poor sportsmanship from an England captain.

This has now become a very tricky and sensitive situation that we all have to deal with; the last few days have presented us all with an unprecedented amount of opinion(s) and at times, (some) pretty harsh words via various social media channels. In terms of the social media side, we are all entitled to our own opinions, that's only fair. How do we move forward; that's the really important question that needs to be answered and how can we achieve an outcome that will satisfy everyone. A fair and resolute decision needs to be reached to bring this matter to a swift conclusion otherwise the game of rugby itself is at a high risk of drawing itself into its own demise. I genuinely feel for everyone involved in this particular situation. I can feel the huge amount of weight and opinion swaying the balance from one side of the argument to the other, which is strong, don't get me wrong. But, you have to acknowledge what the "defendant" is going through as well as the impact that might be having on him and his family. So with that said, it might be time for us all to take a step back and let the people at the closest levels to this situation manage it.

He is the ireland coach, it is an ireland press conference. if you want to ask that question then do it when andy farrell does a press conference about his family. it is incredible how low our journalism has reached, social media is the gift from down below that will just keep on giving. as eddie said, give yourself an uppercut. and i would add, get out on the field and play a game. rugby is the one of the best team sports, if not the best, in the world. let's not let social media and cheap journalism bring us down to other sports. keep rugby at its rightful place, never will be football. mates for life over many countries. anyone who has played to any level will know the beauty of the game.
