Philip DeFranco can I ask you opinion on company vs person in terms of past actions? James Gunn got fired from actions he clearly no longer agrees with that have not necessarily hurt people. Yet Disney the company has made cartoons that are very racist and they are not ever (or least rarely) considered for those actions. I feel Dan Harmon scenario is an extension of this.

You are 100% right by saying this is slavery, I’m a Middle Eastern from Bahrain and I’ve seen these problems. Please don’t judge all of us we’re not all monsters. Thankfully things are getting better for workers and there are no more “Force of Stay” in Bahrain, UAE and Oman. I don’t know about Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Please don’t get this the wrong way, Muslims and Arabs are completely different things. Islam forbids these kinds of actions. This is not our culture.

What Lies Beneath The Weave you are spot on. The general consensus in that region (Saudi arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman) is that the servant/maid is almost a legitimate slave that has no right to hold his own passport since he has no right to travel or go anywhere without the permission of the owner of the house he's serving. moreover those servants/maids don't get to have a life of their own, like having a house for example. instead they are bound to their employer and live in his basement or attic all the time eat whatever food he gives them and serve 24/7, hence why this thing in the video is outraged by the thought of them having a day off! it's downright slavery.

They signed up obviously not knowing it would be so terrible that they would later want to flee. Can you imagine? Think of the courage it took that person to leave their home in hopes of a chance at a better life. Now think how bad work conditions would have to be for them to abandon their plight. Empathy is important y’all.

Nobody should be hanging on to ANYBODY'S passport, the one exception being a parent with young children hanging on to theirs. If you are an adult doing this to another adult, you just aren't right. A passport is for personal identification purposes. You are NOT that person. It should be absolutely illegal everywhere for anyone to do that.

So here in Dubai my mom owns a shop and she holds on to the employees' passports because she has to, and it's part of the contract that the employee can't travel until completing 2 years. Recently, my mom gave one of her (Filipino) employees her passport to go back to the Philippines and visit her brother for his apparent wedding, but she never came back. When she checked, she found out the employee had actually gone to Saudi Arabia, probably to work somewhere else without completing her contract. This put my mom in a lot of trouble because she now had one less employee than she needed, not enough time to employ a new one, and 13,000 dollars had gone to waste on the Filipino employee's paperwork.

The problem with anything Middle Eastern is that it's stuck in a mentality that worked just fine over 2000 years ago, their entire technological development beyond the point of a certain Muslim priest's instant ban of any study other than the study of the Khoran, is what stunted them entirely. They remained in their time period, were encouraged to ignore their surroundings and other cultures for over 2000 years. I've personally got a friend in Qatar right now, working under a similar agreement, they have practically no rights, if a citizen there ran him over with a car they would not be charged with murder, hospitals can't even serve them as citizen's, they would just be turned away. Defending Middle Eastern culture and mentality is like defending the guy with the whip in his hand and blaming the slave for being whipped and in chains. This isn't 150 B.C, it's 2018 and we really don't need this shit on the globe, nobody does, this is the excuse often used to bomb Iraq, Iran, Algeria, Syria, the list goes on they are ALL Middle Eastern, all highly religious and mostly Muslim. People can deny it as much as they want, but in truth, if they didn't behave like monsters it would be much harder to pin an excuse onto them to be killed for their oil. I don't like it, which is why I strongly believe that they need to have a grand awakening to reality, as soon as possible or they risk ending up like the Star Trek series. You see every country and race, but you don't see Muslims.

If only it was that easy. When you come from a poor country and need to support your family and extended family, sometimes you don't get a choice. This is why so many Filipinos choose to work as servants in Arab countries. I don't agree with it, but they really have limited choices about how to put food on the table.
@thatfarang3497
@thatfarang3497 6 лет назад
ChibbyYumi There are always other choices. Those choices may not be the most desirable, but they are there. In my travels I've met a few employers who wanted to do the same and I've always said no, even though the pay/benefits were greater with them than elsewhere. It's always worth making less money and keeping your passport.

Thank you for trying to understand the situation. Kuwait is notorious for abusing their domestic helpers. Filipinos are hardworking people. We do not run away from our responsibilities and are not afraid of hard work. We do, however, run away from abusive employers and Kuwait is just one of the middle Eastern countries that are notorious for abusive employers who beat, starve, and sometimes sexually harassed domestic helpers. I wish my people would not go to Kuwait anymore.

I live in kuwait, and I had a previous friend who had a Filipino "servant" who genuinely felt miserable. I could hear his mother screaming at her every single day, she would have tears in her eyes, She missed her sister and home in the Philippines and she couldn't go back because of his mother. One day, she wasn't there anymore and my friend told me that she took her passport and ran away. I hope she has a better life, because that wasn't how any human being should be treated. Middle Eastern people are spoiled because most of them are born into rich families and their parents basically never taught them how to treat other ethnicities(?) like human. I'm not saying all MEs are like this but the majority of the people I have met are this way. This Sondos person is a perfect example of how people treat their workers and it's disgustingly horrifying, but this is the world we live in.
@eventusvantos2770
@eventusvantos2770 6 лет назад
Yurn say what???? That couldnt be farther from the truth. Most of them are rich? Not even close... Only the princes and top positions on companies are rich..... Majority of people you claim to have met does not represent the reality which is that the majority do not hold this view. I think some explanation is required for perspective. In middle eastern countries like Kuwait, Employers need to sponsor employees and pay quite a lot of money to the government each time they hire a foreign worker. You need to pay visa fees, labor, department fees, medical test fees, etc. Then, if you hire through a recruitment agency, there's their fee as well as the travel cost of the new employee to bring them from Philippine to Kuwait in this case. Quite long flight and there costs in the Philippines as well in order for the maid to be allowed to leave the country. On average, t sponsor a maid it will cost about 4000 US dollars when you consider all these things. In some places, there's also an additional security deposit one needs to lodge with the government. This is returned when you cancel the employees visa and all claims have been settled. The deposit is kept to resolve any disputes over compensation. This is excluding things like monthly salary, food, accomedation, medical bills, etc. Which is usually provided by the employer. The salary amount is up to the employer but I believe for housemaids there is a minimum wage rule (I am speaking about UAE, but except something similar for Kuwait) So what she's talking about is.... What if my maid decides to leave the country 3 months after I hire her? How do I recover my expenses? I am not saying I agree with her at all. And she probably spends more on shoes in a week by the looks of her, but I think you need to be aware of how things work there. It doesn't mean she has bought the maid or literally owns her.

Because they use "abuse" as an excuse, the locals will pay up to the 20k usd to bring a worker into the country, and the only way to insure that the workers will not run away to saty illegally in the country, or do any other illegal activity, is to hold on to their passports (if a worker kills, steals, or stays illegally) whoever brought them in will have to pay the fine or go to jail, and most of these female workers run away and join prostitution Gangs / sell drugs/ or offer others illegal services to make money, so why risk all that happening, and risk loosing your investment and going to jail, just to be "nice" wake up and start living in the real world.

In order to Sponsor these employees they they pay a large amount of money for processing and licensing all the legal paperwork. Due to this these employers feel more entitled as having their employee run away is a loss of money for them. So keeping the passports is a way to protect them from losing money on the sponsorship. Also working 6 days a week in normal in many countries. Also in these countries there is a power dynamic and is obvious when they call these employees servants, this is a cultural thing. We simply don't see this much anymore in North America so it's not culturally acceptable here. The only solution is really more job opportunities so people don't HAVE to work as servants to send money back to their families.

There are times where i see the plight of Palestinians and feel for my Arab brothers, and then i see what happens in Libya, Lebanon, and the gulf countries, i hear the stories of friends and family who have been mistreated due to their race, and my mind becomes clouded with dark thoughts. All I can say is that a culture is made up of its people. It is the actions of the people who define a culture. There may be good people and bad people in the culture. It is our duty as Muslims to enjoin the good, and forbid the bad, but when bad people outnumber the good then the culture is rotten. It is up to the good people to speak up and do something about the bad. Start a movement, say or do something. It is something that is missing in our countries. “Verily, Allah will not change the (good) condition of a people as long as they do not change their state (of goodness) themselves (by committing sins and by being ungrateful and disobedient to Allah)” [al-Ra’d 13:11]. Everything is tradition, but sometimes tradition needs to be challenged. There is a really good quote on tradition, i don't know who said it: "Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire".

I want to thank PhillyD for covering this story. I'm 22, I was born and brought up in Kuwait and I am happy that such an issue is finally been covered by mainstream media. This issue is just the tip of the iceberg. The problem at hand is much bigger than this. It is important to understand the nature and magnitude of this situation first. Another thing you have to understand is that the culture is not the same as western countries. You wonder how can a human be as fickle, deluded as Sondos and not realize what crosses human rights? It's mainly because it has gotten to a stage where violating human rights has become a norm. Although I don't want to generalize, I have to speak about majority of the population of the Kuwaitis. There are obviously good and decent humans everywhere, but the reality is majority of the locals are entitled pricks who are used to getting it their way all the time. Believe or not, but 80-90% of the locals have the same mindset as this crazy lady. Any resistance could lead to a ridiculous outburst such as this. The general attitude of the domestic employers are 'I BOUGHT YOU HERE, SO I OWN YOU NOW. TRY TO DO ANYTHING ELSE AND I WILL FUCKING MAKE YOUR LIFE HELL'. There are alot more 'atrocities' that happen under the veil of being a 'norm'. I hope that all comes to light some day too.

If she is worried that her maid will fly back to the Philippines without informing her, then she might be doing something bad or treating the help badly for her to feel the need to ESCAPE in the first place. Most Filipinos will endure a lot just to be able to provide for their families back home. That’s a fact. So if they are treated fairly by their employers, why would they risk their employment? Also, I know that not all mid-east nationals are this way. I’ve met really good people from when I worked in Dubai. It’s sad whenever a bad apple spoils a good bunch.

There is something really, really scary about old content/words/jokes being repurposed from a decade ago to today's culture. I don't think what Dan Harmon did was funny, but I just can't see myself getting outraged over humor of an unsuccessful pilot that never aired. Comedy is experimentation for better or worse, and I feel the need to emphasize that people change. I feel like it's a false equivalence to the Me Too movement with how people are throwing James Gunn and Dan Harmon under the bus. People are coming out of the woodwork to ridicule these people over old content, but these people are not anything but people who made some jokes in very poor taste years prior. There is no justice removing these people in my opinion, and I just worry a precedent is being set here.

If he had actually abused somebody it would be a different story. People are reacting as if he had actually raped a baby. Similarly to the Count Dakula incident - this is a bad and distasteful joke that has been stripped of context. He wouldn’t think of making such a joke nowadays. He didn’t hurt anyone. He isn’t hurting anyone. Dan Harmon is not a threat. Even though he announced weeks ago that he’d like to retire soon, Harmon’s career will continue to thrive after this.
@decotYT

I don't think you can put the James Gunn and Dan Harmon incident in the same category. Dan had 1 video that explored a joke in poor taste that fizzled and that was it. James had a lot of tweets joking about the issue. And it doesn't matter that it was a Trump supporter who pointed it out. If a Democrat exposes a Republican for tax fraud, any political motivation or ulterior motive doesn't negate the crime that was exposed.

Sondos probably isn't going to be able to get out of her own way on this controversy about her terrible views. I think because of cultural norms in Kuwait she sees this as acceptable; they have a huge problem with human trafficking problem, especially with foreigners. It isn't exactly rare for wealthy Kuwaitis to treat the people they sponsor like slaves and abuse them. The abuse they endure can be through through verbal threats, beatings, and sexual assault. Sondos probably sees this as a normal way of life, and doesn't understand why people are upset with her statements, as she claims she doesn't treat her "servants" as poorly as some. No one should be treated the way some these foreign workers are.

When your employee can't leave on their own free will, it's slavery. You can beat around the bush all you want. IT'S SLAVERY! In India, it's even illegal for a company to ask their employee to sign a 'Bond'. Which means a company can't ask it's employee to be in a service contract with them for a specific amount of time. And even if they do sign them somehow they can leave anytime however they'll have to pay an agreed upon sum of amount to the employer. And here are Middle Eastern employers straight up confiscating passports of their employees and treating them like animals.

"that sounds like slavery, that sounds like you think that person is property and you don't want your property getting away" Well, yeah...that's exactly what it is. The "sponsorship program" is indentured servitude. The employer pays for the employee's expenses to move to the country, and then the employee is indebted and needs to work it off, if they can ever work it off as now the accounting for that debt is entirely under the employers purview. For anyone who may be slightly on the fence about this thing, consider for a moment that the whole debt slavery, indentured servant model is a quite popular control mechanism used by sex traffickers... So while your favorite make up shill on IG may not be a sex trafficker, she does appear to be unambiguously morally aligned with sex traffickers... Even a really trendy eye palette can't make that shit a good look.

Thanks for mentioning how this resembles indentured servitude. From reading the story I gathered that she was concerned about having paid for the domestic worker to travel to Kuwait she was concerned about people who would just flee once they got a day off. I kind of got her point because I imagine that does happen and I imagine that could be frustrating to pay for domestic workers to come and have them flake on her. But then you have to think that it would behoove the employer to make their job more enticing to a person so that the worker would want to remain in their employ. But then when you brought up indentured servitude it also weighed heavily on my thoughts. The fact is that there are very little if not any rights for domestic workers and this type of slave trade is inhumane from Western standards. But what I think she really did wrong was sound so cavalier and entitled. Um yeah, your doméstics are human and deserve down time to live.

No, H1B is nothing of the sort. They still have their passports, they are still free to travel, and they are not paying off a debt for the privilege of working over here. They can even swap employers, as one former coworker of mine did (leaving our employer in a pretty big lurch, as it so happens). Being expelled from the country if you lose your sponsor is simply not at all the same thing as being trapped into a job because your employer controls your finances & id. No one is entitled to remain in a country they are not a citizen of, and countries have the right to enforce their borders; to head off THAT 'rebuttal'. Vice versa, no Americans are living & working in India or any other country long term without a visa or acquiring citizenship either.

mohannad amasha it's not about the job and getting paid. Yes, they are fed, paid and such. The point is, an employee has the right to quit his/her job. Holding on to their passports prevents them from doing that because they are afraid the employers will not return them. As for the employers being compensated, isn't that the risk of every employment in any industry? If u employ, there is always a risk that it won't last, doesn't give u the right to hold on to them against their will. More importantly, employees have DIED and been KILLED. Follow the story of the woman who was put in the freezer and you'll probably get the passport thing. Her employer refused to give her passport until she was eventually killed. if u look closely enough too, See how long justice for the victim was served.

mohannad amasha Many of these women are promised so many things and are given all these high hopes but reality hits ones they arrive at their employers place. The living conditions and treatments are unbelievable. I’m hoping not all employers are like this but so far I’ve yet to hear any positive stories. The point is paid or not, no one deserves to be treated like shit! We’re all humans and everyone needs to treat each other as such.

This comment probably won't be seen. But boy do I care. I live in India and I'm a young lawyer. I come from a middle class family, of which my father's generation is the first to be well educated and have a good income. Needless to say, our family is heavy on charity and feel very blessed for everything however little we have. My previous job was as a junior to this lawyer who was born with a diamond encrusted golden spoon. She was born to the second wife of a tax embezzling jewellery maker who died and had all his property taken away by the government. She still managed to have a rich comfortable life throughout. She was already old when I met her and she never married so had no immediate family except for her grandnephew. She treated us all employees very badly, like we are a level lower than her. We weren't allowed to use the microwave, she monitored our lunchtime, and kept saying to us that we need to hurry up and eat fast. She would walk up to me casually and say "why are you being so dumb today?" for no reason whatsoever. She'd eat her food with h the employees, and made sure everyone left at different times so we'd never talk and share our thoughts on her with each other. One other girl said its her grandfather's death anniversary and that she would not come for a party. My ex boss said to the girl that those ceremonies are very boring and that she should come to the office party instead. On the day of the said office party, she asked me if I know any vegetarian restaurants available. I was telling her and she mocked me for being "slow". I named a bunch, yet she got us take out food from the take out restaurant on the ground floor of the office (where we got our lunch from every single goddamn day). When the food did arrive, the lady gracefully said we ordered too much, and we always waste so much food. HUMILIATING is a small word. But what really fucked me up was her slave girl. She was young, just a few years older than me. She made very little money, and wasn't married and came from a village nearby. Her job was to constantly stay at home with my ex boss because she felt lonely in her giant house. There were no breaks, no weekends, no outings etc. She would be locked in the house everyday by my boss. She wasn't encouraged to educate herself, and was confined to the house. She was not allowed to even have friends, let alone have a boyfriend, needless to say. She did everything in her power to trap me in her office, where I was not paid anything because I was earning "experience". I was given money one month and never again. I got scared and I stopped going to work. I gave various excuses like I'm sick, or my foot broke, etc. I ultimately left her for once and have never been happier.

Thanks for all your kind words guys! I didn't really think this one will ever be read... I really wish I can do something for the girl but she'd never tell the cops the truth and I'll be in trouble for "falsely" alerting the cops. I'm from a big city (mumbai) so I don't know about casteism in rural areas. But I think we have mostly overcome all the prejudices. My family happens to be of the "top" caste, and you must have already heard of our financial situation. In modern India, after capitalism came in, caste is mostly of no consequence. People only care about how wealthy you are. But there are people like her, who have been rich for several generations, so she is a complete casteist. She told me how much she hated Muslims and the local community of Mumbai. She proudly said she never hires a Muslim person. She's a scumbag

I hate whenever people say we must be respectful of all culture, no matter what. That's such a stupid idea. If it was the case to accept cultures, no matter what, then NO ONE would have progressed since the beginning of time. Slavery was a part of early American culture, should we have just kept it in place? Should the early American settlers have just adjusted to the culture the monarchy had set in England and not left to go to America?
@blindeagleace3629
@blindeagleace3629 6 лет назад
Tommy M Respecting and accepting are two different things though. You can respect people’s opinions but you don’t have to accept them. Also I’ve never heard of anyone saying that we should accept all cultures. Just that there is some good things and unique things from each culture. And other times, you kind of have to accept other people’s culture. If you are in a field of work that requires you to go overseas like the military work, trade jobs, or being an anthropologist.

When they force you to stay even against your will, that's forced servitude. this is a common practice throughout the middle east. I recall the time i was in Saudi Arabia, there was very few native employees of many of the businesses there. many of them living off the backs of those they employ in this same manner. its actually quite disgusting and has no place in society today. its a form of modern slavery to force someone to stay in a location against their will, and you have them working for you. When you take away their ability to leave when they wish you are doing that. The only thing separating it from fully forced servitude/slavery is them not going off to collect them against their will.

Sondos' statements strike me as spoiled and entitled. I don't know what she's like in her personal life but the views she expressed while not necessarily racist, suggest a person who feels she's entitled to her way of life regardless of it's negative impact on another person and doesn't understand that the rights and freedoms of these workers exceed her own desires and rights as an employer. It seems to me that she's lived all or most of her life with someone subservient to her and doesn't understand that such a situation isn't normal or acceptable (almost) anywhere else in the world. This doesn't justify her views or actions, only speculates on her motives. Leaving a culture to it's own devices is fine to a point, but there is always a line to be crossed. Racism, genocide, slavery, murder, these are crossing the line in ways that cannot be ignored. Culture is a defense for some things but not a free pass for everything.

Sandos is clearly on the mindset with many Kuwaitis, they treat Filipinos and many other of their employees like slaves. The reason they hold the passport is so they cannot escape from them, an employee won’t leave out of nowhere if they are treated well. In her mind she thinks she has justified her reasons, that’s what makes it scary, I truly feel bad for those who work for them. It makes me sick.

I was in Dubai for a month a few years ago and it was during Ramadan, so almost every night we were having feasts with other families for Iftar. One of the families we went to had gotten a new in-home maid that day and while I don’t know Arabic fluently I heard them say something to the affect of “I hope she’s not one of the ones that cries on the first night, just get the job done and get over it” and I’ve honestly never felt so nauseous in my life over the behavior of another person. Of course because of etiquette and the culture there I couldn’t say anything being a guest, a female, and a “child” at the time. I understand that cultures around the world view workers in a different light and that being raised around that culture you’d become desensitized to the injustice but it’s nonetheless disappointing to see countries making the same mistakes that we’ve already learned from.

Never heard of Sondos Alqattan, now that I do, I don't WANT to know more about the sort of person she is. The fact that she believes domestic workers are EXEMPT from human rights means they are treated as slaves until your contract is over, and are treated as LESS than human. That said; employers in the middle east HOLDING the passports of their employees hostage is VERY REAL - ESPECIALLY when it's Filipino employees. Fact: domestic worker abuse found in the middle east has been ongoing for over two decades or more. A few of the people who I know that work there have run into more than their fair share of racists. Also, if you can get a hold of their LOCAL jobsites/papers (not the heavily edited ones that are available to international consumption), you can easily spot a ton of racist "tells" in what they want for employment right down to what color of skin or nationality specified. As long as you aren't Asian - especialy filipino - you won't get lowballed on your wages.

Do you think the antagonism towards Filipinos has anything to do with them being 1. One of the few southeast Asian countries that isn't majority Muslim, and 2. Their being majority Catholic
@obsidiansands
@obsidiansands 6 лет назад
@Nick Finan To be honest; it's a toss-up between the two - I think, but it can also be other factors outside of the two. The Philippines is one of the few countries (or more likely the ONLY country that I can think of) that have more than half of the world's "best exports" labelled as people in the form of domestic workers. Filipinoes are usualy touted as extremely good and hard working workers no matter what job class they are in - ranging from often mentioned domestic workers, to being CEO's. For others; there's a certain stigma sometimes when you're looked at as the "maid" or "hired help" stereotype. Anybody - even to this day, will think similar thoughts to Sondos Alqattan's attitude because those in that kind of "category" of domestic help are those having low iq - and are more or less "cattle" that don't deserve to be human just because they're "servants". Catholicism could also be part of it - but I don't think it's the whole story. Depending on which side of Islamic faith they're at, there ARE some sects that are totally AGAINST anybody outside their religion and treat them as "infidels". There is no in-between tolerance for the most part. You could be an atheist for all they care and still will look down on you just because you're different. I had an ex that still works in Dubai, and even though she's a MANAGER in her department - they STILL required her to hand over her passport while contracted to them. So yes, it's NOT just domestic workers there - and also, sometimes NOT just Filipinos. Although I have YET to hear any US/Brit/Western/European expat given the same treatment. Despite existing laws, multiple big and small organizations in the middle east continue to take away the passports of foreign employees, entrapping employees into a byzantine system of human rights violations and forced employment. Sometimes, just "arguing" to keep your passports have consequences - most especially worrisome to domestic workers more often than not because they have literally NO choice whatsoever. You're only lucky if you've gotten a good rapport with the employer - if not, life can be hell (and sometimes unluckily fatal). Some of those consequences include employer-issued fines, wage stagnation, and sudden termination - and sometimes a beating if you're contracted as a "servant" (ie domestic worker). The sudden termination also carries a permanent blacklisting 9 times out of 10 - making you unable to find work anywhere there with immediate deportation. If you're lucky, you get deported. If unlucky, you get "deported" in a body bag as in the case of one domestic worker that was found in their employer's fridge.

@Philip DeFranco. The way the people in the middle east treats expac working is horrible. I meet my wife (filipina) while I was in the military back in 2003. She was working in Bahrain and I was stationed there for about 8 months. And OMG dealing with Arabs can be so much of a headache and yes the way they treat overseas working is in fact borderline slavery. What they consider non long working hours is a minimum of 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. That said I have a few other things to comment on how they treat other people. - Workers are required to hand over their passport, this is actually done because the Arabs do not honor the contract terms. Thus they hold the passport to keep the expac from leaving. - Housing/Living conditions are never what they are described in their contract, the housing can have 3 or more people per room and they also charge the expac worker RENT.. - Almost always charge the expac worker a huge fee just to get the chance to work overseas, often this fee is so high they can spend one to two years just paying this back. So despite being lead to believe they will be making good money, they take rent, travel and visa cost and a huge fee just to get to work there.. Which ends up making they expac earn about 75% less than what they were promised.. So they only end up making about $200 a month. Then they have to buy their own food form that money as well. Also forgot to add, they also impose curfews on workers and dictate where and when they can go somewhere and also prohibit them in many cases from dating.

as someone who is middle eastern and grew up in the middle east, everything you are talking about is relevant and frustratingly common, however generalizing that all Arabs adhere to these ways and are hard to deal with is not accurate. this is not a cultural thing and it should not overshadow efforts by nationals and expats within the country itself to reform these social injustices. as someone who researched into this topic and became familiarized with different groups within Kuwait, including Project189 and Social Work Society, who have been working for years on reforming these policies and spreading awareness about social injustices that domestic workers go through, it is important to notice that there are people, locals and expats, that care about these issues and what to ensure that these human right violations are not happening in their countries. not everyone is as ignorant and demonic as these statements make it seem and i think that that and the efforts aforementioned should be noted as well when talking about this topic... especially when it is done in a generalizing way.

If I buy something from the supermarket and it is off, I would ask for a refund but this is an actual human being, not some out of date sandwich. Those words she spoke ( at 4.10 ) have got me so angry that she could be so dismissive of somebody's life that I hope her poor maid is able to get her passport and get a better employer. Sondos is a worthy recipient of douchebag of the day for sure 🏆🥇
@lumiluver
@lumiluver 6 лет назад
♻Delilah Winchester ♻ RIGHT? My employer sure as hell doesn’t get a refund if I quit my job. If they were employed properly and normally like everyone else in the world does, the employer would just STOP PAYING THEM. Just by that statement of hers you can tell that her “culture” supports modern day slavery. Sickening.
@Foxtrotlima73
@Foxtrotlima73 6 лет назад
The more I have thought about it, and why she would call her maid a commodity and get worried about a refund is if she "bought" her off a migrant worker trafficker and still owes money on the transaction. The de humanisation of the poor woman is still getting me so angry. I couldn't agree more about with what you said about her culture (or lack thereof) having slavery so deeply ingrained into it. If everything was above board, the maid should be able to leave anytime she wants.
@questionmark5463
@questionmark5463 6 лет назад
♻Delilah Winchester ♻ I think some explanation is required for perspective. In most middle eastern countries, Employers need to sponsor employees and pay quite a lot of money to the government each time they hire a foreign worker. You need to pay visa fees, labour department fees, medical test fees etc. Then, if you hire through a recruitment agency, there's their fee as well as the travel cost of the new employee to bring them from.. Philippines to Kuwait in this case. Quite a long flight and there are costs in the Philippines as well in order for the maid to be allowed to leave the country. On average, to sponsor a maid will cost about 4000 US dollars roughly when you consider all these things. In some places, there's also an additional security deposit one needs to lodge with the government. This is returned when you cancel the employees visa and all claims have been settled. The deposit is kept to resolve any disputes over compensation. This is all excluding things like monthly salary, food, accommodation, medical bills etc. which is usually provided for by the employer. The salary amount is upto the employer, but I believe that for housemaids there is a minimum wage requirement rule. (I am speaking about the UAE, but I expect something similar for Kuwait) So what she's talking about is... What if my maid decides to leave the country 3 months after I hire her? How do I recover my expenses? I am not saying I agree with her at all, and she probably spends more on shoes in a week by the looks of her, but I think you need to be aware of how things work there. It doesn't mean she has bought the maid or literally owns her.

I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know about the things I was ignorant about before, Like you said, you don't agree with her but I genuinely appreciate you letting me know how things work there. It's no secret that slavery in the Middle East is a major issue. I've spent a lot of time in various countries in that part of the world and I've come across numerous "servants," both native and foreign that have experienced abuse and manipulation by their "employers." Things like passports being confiscated and wages being withheld are common occurrences, unfortunately. It's good that countries like Kuwait are attempting to improve the situations of these workers, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Hopefully stories like this will lead to awareness of the issue and possibly some positive change in the world. Only time will tell.

I lived in the Middle East for 9 years and a half. For most of my life I’ve had a nanny, because both my parents are doctors and can be too busy to take care of me sometimes. They didn’t neglect me, but they have long working hours. I think of all of my nannies I’ve had over the years as my family. It makes me so sad that these people are being treated so horribly. They deserve to be treated and respected better. These are the people who take care of you.

I lived in the UAE for 19 years and I’d just like to point out that Sondos’ opinion is very common in the middle east and most people there would agree with her if not think that she’s being too lenient on the workers. Some people do treat their workers respectfully and teach their kids to treat them as if they were their uncles/aunts, but they are a very small minority.

I don't know if this is just propaganda, but here in the Philippines, we have this TV series of "real" overseas filipino worker stories where they're being maltreated by their employers which are disproportionately more common coming from Muslim countries (they do show non-muslim ones too). The Mindanao issue (a muslim part of the country) doesn't help either too. I've also heard from a boss who has worked there that they (males) must grow beards there or else they'd be raped. Could be just a joke though. I've no intention of working in the Middle-East anyhow. The weather seems awful.

About the tragic events in Greece. A shine of hope to all the destruction that the fires caused, was the incredible response from people all over Greece in a matter of hours. Responding to pleas for help through social media, a huge influx of volunteers, medicine, food, clothes, money went directly to the areas affected. Blood doners rushed to the hospitals and there were even people giving their spare houses to families that lost theirs. I am Indonesian-Canadian. Indonesia is also a country that sends many foreign domestic workers to other countries to make money for their families. This is a very close to home topic. Even with domestic workers within the country, it can be a little inconvenience to have someone quit and leave, but they are human and that's their right. Just deal with it and take care of your home before hiring someone new. It's not like the whole household will fall apart in just a few days. They are not slaves, they are employees who have the right to quit just like with any other type of work.

And, the fact that she compared an adult employee's rights to that of a minor indeed proves that she views these innocent workers as less than equal to her. She has no respect for the human rights of these workers and is treating them as slaves who's inherent value is monetary. Truly sickening.
