I had an old women give me attitude at the bootsale recently her prices are ridiculous no suprise she turns up everyweek with the same stuff she cant shift i just dropped her overpriced camera back in the box
Surprising that anyone In there right mind would try sell a box of Big Mac sauces and out of date ones at that no one is that desperate in the whole uk 😂😂
Think that may have been me stepping on the lead of that habitat lamp! You nearly sent me flying when you grabbed it lol! Would have said hello but got a bit star struck 😂😂😂
Great video as always! Always a risk buying electricals from boot sales, but you have to judge as best you can in the moment. Guess thats just the risk us resellers have to take.. Keep up the great work!
Another great video. I pick up a lot of video players too (usually from Sadlers) and find about 1 in 4 that have issues and are basically worthless. So I will keep buying them as the profit outweighs a usually small loss. Its just a pain having to dispose of the bad ones. Anyway, do you find that at this point in the season where the weather is so changeable, buying electricals from the early boot sales is not a great idea? I found a vintage Sony CD player one morning last Sunday at Dunton and when examining the item, the top of the machine was soaking wet with condensation. Because of that reason I left it. But later on I passed the same stall, had another look at the same machine and the sun had dried the top off. But because of what I'd seen earlier, the damage inside had probably already been done.
Great video george thank you for sharing your tips , shame some of your viewers seem to judge you i dont get them !!!! Keep up the the good work for those of us that appreciate the info you share .
Feel your pain picked up the same model a couple months back and it did not work . But that's the boots I like for you you win some you lose some hope you have good week
Don't be too down George sometimes this will happen and especially with electronics they are big money makers if all is good but damn nightmare if faulty so dump it move on, your other buys got you out of jail free mate
I usually ask three questions and watch the response. Q1. Is it working? Q2. Have you tested it? Q3. How have have you tested it? Question 3 is the important one but only works if you ask the first two. After question 3 they either confess that they have only turned it on or give some details on how they tested it. Also, watch their body language. Depending on answer and body language you can then either negotiate or walk away.
well tbh George asked an open question (a question that can be perceived differently by different people) and here's the big mistake right here, "do you know IF it works?" his reply was" of course i do", if you wanted to get technical, did he lie at all if he knows it "doesnt work"? i know its being pedantic but fact is personally if i had just badly phrased a question id of followed up with a concrete closed clarification. something like, "so does it work or not then?" ;) in short yes he may have been misleading (imho yes he did most definately mislead), but did he lie to Georges face?, tbh no, no he did not. i'll add another important one iain, as it may even have been the case here, how long ago? they may have last had it running months/years ago, maybe even that chap in video possibly thought it worked, who knows for sure? (thats the problem with open questions lol) its a minefield that anyone should easily clear if they take their time and dont rush ;)
@@gimble8638 Hi, I purposely ask the open questions. That way I can assess body language against verbal response. People will "leak" while they lie (eye movements, hand placement, throat covering etc). It's difficult to make up complicated stories without preparation and they often give themselves away. By asking a few questions I can help lead them to the truth (I'm no expert at this so don't think I'm a Jedi or Guru). A few times I have gone from "yeah it's fully working" to "I only plugged it in and a light came on". This can be a good time to negotiate, whilst they are on the backfoot. I had one guy tell me "it's working" and then told me he bought from another seller whilst setting up his stall - I walked away from this seller. Another seller started to tell me about how he plugged in his minidisk player, he was genuine and I paid up for a quality item. Generally, people want to tell the truth. It's hard wired into us (except sociopaths). Sorry, I've been getting into body language and psychology recently. It really helps.
@@robstillor8516 Yes body language is key, look them in the eye and ask if it works, if they walk away, pace around, break eye contact etc etc then there's a high chance they're lying!
@@sammytheseal2307 Yes, body language is key. Be careful of the "eye contact" misconception tho. It's not necessarily a lie indicator. If you interested in this stuff check out "The Behavioural Panel" on RU-vid. I've been watching loads of their vids recently. Really useful stuff.
i am commenting only on what we actually see in the video and the language (verbal) used, you "listed" questions and i added an important one, and I also commented on what we "heard" as we didnt see the guy, i mearly commented on the "fact" that questions should be direct and not open to any misinterpretation :) none of your questions listed above are open btw buddy, to put it simply open questions cannot be answered by yes or no (need further interpretation by who you ask so shows their feeling or understanding), yours are all closed and only require yes or no answers and "i" added an open one for both clarification of how recently and to gauge response :p in the way you are describing , George in this case really did need a closed question (like the ones you listed and mine above in my first comment "does it work or not then?") to acheive a straight yes or no answer but instead he gave an open question if we are gonna get technical ;) i understand the use of open questions "in the feild" also, and that they are mostly useless when trying to obtain simple facts and only have some use in conveying someones intent if there is reason atall to doubt them, and thats never necessary untill you ask a closed (yes or no) question first lol, George needed facts here and straight answers :) body launguage would have been of no use as the guy said "he did know if it was working or not" thats completely true!! wether it WAS actually working or not is another question which literally is kinda my whole point :D Open questions are mostly used best in teaching, if you ask the pupil something that can be answered yes or no (closed) did they know it? or did they just pick the right one by chance out of 50/50? Open question needs explanation/understanding, showing of interpretation etc etc which is exactly what George needed after asking a question which quite frankly was ambiguous to say the very least and receiving an eaqually ambiguous answer :)
Unfortunately with buyers and sellers you can never assume that someone is 100% honest. Unable to test electrical items is rolling the devil's dice hardcore and sometimes it pays off and most times it doesn't. But keep up the great work.
Whenever we sell electricals, battery operated toys and the likes we always clean them up, fit new batteries if need be and check all is working ok before we sell anything. We wouldn't like to buy something not working, so it should work both ways.
What an absolute knob! Have McDonald's discontinued them then? He probably asked for "a couple of big Mac sauces" and chucked them in a box to try and sell them. Moron 🤣
How do you set postage prices on Ebay worldwide when you don't know where its going till its sold. Id like to sell non FRAGILE items worldwide but don't no how to set postage . Also do you use Hermes for FRAGILE items. They seem to play football with my parcels maybe just my area, and my Hermes depot is only 1 mile away so super handy
I use ebays global shipping program so it’s automatically calculated. Saying that I don’t think they accept fragile items so you’d have to do your own shipping
Looking at a minimum of £60 for a bulb if you are lucky. Then no guarantee it will work. We used to have to put cages round them because the bulbs were so valuable. Glad you didn’t pay to much
Clearly knew it was faulty. Such a shame. I will say George you see more piles of cameras at car boots than I do. Wish I was in your area for car boots.
I have bought stuff from seller you purchased the DVD combo from. All my stock purchased has been fine. But as you know any buy from a bootsale is a risk. That's why you pay 10-20% of what you think you will receive. I've stated to chuck away most of my faulty stock, the amount of time and space it takes up is not worth it.
Quick tip I try to use when going to boot sales is take a portable ac outlet (on amazon around 70-80 quid), quickly test the plug if they've nothing to hide no problem
On the stall selling all digitial cameras £3 I was hoping you would look through the old SLR gear and ask about them as you can pick up some gems if cheap.
I did indeed! They contacted me a few months ago asking for permission to use the footage. Got a nice little bit of pocket money from it too which was nice 😁👍
Hi George, just wanted to say thank you for your videos. They are always a great watch and you clearly know your stuff! Just a thought, with the broken/faulty DVD/VHS Combo, if you have no luck, maybe you could get in touch with fellow RU-vidr MyMateVince, he would no doubt love to take anything that you can't fix apart! Thanks again, Dan
Great video George. I too often get this (broken electronics), hence why I try to pay as little as possible. Still, with it being a Samsung DVD recorder model, your £15 should be safe with just spares/repair. I'd go £25 + post spares/repair on it.
George I hate it when sellers say it’s working and it don’t, or say yer it’s all there how can you possibly know that’s a chance we all take.... if he is there every week then don’t buy from him I’ve done that once bitten twice shy 🍍🍍🍍
I sell at a car boot and i had an electrical item that it worked but the display needed fixing. I was always honest. I said if they knew how to fix it i would charge £3. No one bought it i understand. Its good to be honest.
Can you make some money back on the DVD/VHS player by selling it as is for parts or a project for someone? I know that isn’t the point but at least it would be something back 🤷🏼♀️
This happened to me. Bought an xbox 360, luckily there was a free testing generator on site. It had the red ring of doom, took it back, got my money back and when i walked past later on he had put it back out on the table to resell knowing it was faulty. Why be dishonest?
always a risk with electricals at the boot fair, just got to cut the loses,as long as you make more than you loose,in your case you do well ,so just keep going with your eye for a bargain ,you wouldnt be were you are now if you didnt take that gamble,
People at car boots you can never trust, I bought a similar unit and the VHS plays up with the sound and paid up for it. Seller said was working and blocked me on fb. So reported him.
As you know by now if your projector needs a new bulb they cost the earth. This is an old projector and not worth a great deal if it is in working order. More modern ones are smaller and lighter. Newish ones are led
That unit was pure E-Waste! Most Samsung combos have a known issue with not reading DVDs (not the drawer popping out that is completely different symptom). Sooner or later, all affected units defect with the failure to read DVDs issue. However, they sell instantly if they work (but possible symptoms may exhibit and unit goes bad by the time a buyer receives). It's just a popular brand and will always sell.
Not sure it will help with the determined liar, but i would say make your questions less opened ended / more direct...... "Do you know if its working?" "Yes of course ......" .He has answered your question correctly but in his mind he is completing his sentence. "i know it does not". With VHS players as you know the rubber wheels/rollers or the heads themselves become contaminated or sticky. So in my experience best run a cleaning tape through first and do a full wind rewind cycle before playing a tape. Even your test tapes can pick up moisture especially when stored in cold damp(er) places so a rewind wind cycle on those would do no harm. One last tip is you can buy an invertor that turns 12V into AC and use that to do your basic tests back at your car or ask them to plug into their car. That way you could ask for refund if you felt like it.
Unfortunately there are some people who instead of disposing of faulty electronics properly will offload them at a bootsale. They do it simply because it's buyer beware and you can't test it before buying so you've got basically no recourse. I bought a PS2 at a booter just over a month ago and the seller said it worked fine. Got home and tested it and the disc drive was faulty. When buying electronics you just have to pay as little as possible and hope the seller isn't a lying piece of work.
That guy was a prick and wouldn't buy $@#t from him... Love the light you picked up and the vintage shears in original box... Well done mate... Stay safe...👍💕🔥⚾😷
You need a small portable power generator, a good one is £150,- to £250,- I use a Jay-Long portable power generator, 110v / 220v 220Wh, dc 12v 54000mha This will safe you a lot off 💷💷💷
George I have been buying and selling on and off for around 10 years. If the season is coming to a close and you need stock then can I suggest using sites like easyonlineauction and i-bidder to look at buying from your local auction house. Since the pandemic I have been buying items online via "easy" from my local aucton house in Norfolk and have been able to get a huge amount of high quality stock. A lot of auction houses do both house clearances where people have passed on (morbid I know) and they also accept stock that charities don't sell. This comination allows you to get items that could be in really good condition for next to nothing. To give you an example I bought an older 26" Sony TV for around £18. I also bought a Goodmans sound bar for £5 + commision. I bought two full boxes of CDs and DVDs for £18 and to my amazment I bought a brand new Coolpix B500 Digital camera for £70 (selling on eBay for £175).
Hey Barry. What auctions do you go to? Im from Norwich but rarely source from auctions at the mo as i source quite easily from fb, gumtree and obviously at the moment carboots. Arminghall mainly
@@matthewwall1061 Hi, I'm in Kings Lynn, so I regulary go to Snettisham auction (Online), Methwold auction (Near Thetford/Not Online) and I'm on the sales room.com at the moment looking to bid online for items at Barry L Hawkins auctions in Downham Market for the first time. They are a little bit away from you, however I'm getting great bargins at the moment. You do have another auction in Fakenham which is a bit closer to you. It's not online, but it's free parking.
@@barrywood2730 thank you. Yes bit far for me. I have been to acle and Watton a couple of times and won stuff. I need to get into more but like I said Im easily sourcing stock from else where 😊 thanks for your reply
@@matthewwall1061 Because of Corona virus a lot of the auctions I've bought on are now online, which is great for the buyers as you don't have to go to bid, you just have to go an collect. I find that now I'm buying in bulk (I bought around 18 items) at my last auctions that I am able sell a lot of items (maybe 1 or 2 a day). I do buy from car boots, but I pay more generally for items, a lot of items I found are slightly faulty or there is something wrong with them. When I buy from auctions they are normally house clearances, so the items are generally in good working order.
Hi George if he is there every week pop it in your boot and return the item "not as described" for a full refund. If he denies any knowledge of selling it to you play him this video as evidence 👍
good video again lad he seemed a smarmy idiot when he said course it works ah well cant win them all , as for haggling prices whether people need the money scenario we aint charities and always try for the best price keep it up
