Disinformation and the Southport Incident

The attacker was later identified by a website called "Channel3Now.com" to be "Ali Al-Shakati," but there are a few problems with the claim. 1. The attacker was 17 years old. The names of minors cannot be released by the police while the case is ongoing. 2. The name "Ali Al-Shakati" is not a common Arab name, and may be a nonsense word. 3. The attacker is claimed to be from Rwanda, which has a very small muslim population. 4. There is no address or phone contact information on the Channel3Now.com website - only an email address and a contact form. There is also no record of them on LinkedIn. 5. MI5, not MI6 would deal with domestic terrorists. It is likely that this website is run to trick views into click on or viewing ads. Australian here. I've used this channel to try to explain DIP and similar to an idiot at work who constantly buys into the Russian propaganda machine, esp with regards to Ukraine's invasion. Sadly, he's too far gone to wise up, bit now, and then RMcB videos do get through. Keep up the good fight.

You're correct, Ryan. According to my (admittedly limited) knowledge of Semitic languages, "Shakati" does indeed mean "My apartment." "Al Shakati" just makes it sound nonsensical, meaning "The My Apartment."

Excellent breakdown as always Ryan, one thing I'd like to pick up on is unfortunately a lot of genuine (particularly local) news sites in the UK have this many ads and of this quality, so much so that this might demonstrate an attempt to appear more authentic to a UK reader

On the CNN article about this. The police stated that the person in custody was born in England and was originally from Wales. Further in the article it was stated that the misinformation meant to stoke unrest was perpetrated by a Russian fake news account. The police stated that the people who came to riot were not locals to the area and had intentionally traveled with the intent to cause trouble

FYI Rwanda is a name people recognise in the UK as the Conservatives Government had a plan to deport “illegal migrants” to Rwanda.

I remember seeing the Angry Mob in CnC Generals and thinking that it was an exaggeration. Today, I have been proven wrong.

Honest question. What is the moral basis that RU-vid thinks it’s necessary to censor these videos and demonitize news that goes out of its way to be unbiased and not exaggerated. But news reports that go into the same level of explanation is okay, and yes I understand it’s specifically for “violence”

The way online media is exploited by: state-sponsored bad-actors, terrorist groups and ambulance-chasing criminals needs to be taught in schools. It's a lot easier to see it when you know what you're looking for. Hopefully the UK department of education will fund the development of some learning-resources.

I think the problem is that there has been absolutely no information released at all. 3 young girls have been killed and many others in a critical state and there are no answers. This is leading to a lot of speculation

It's kinda sad that we have lots of people out there saying not to fall for fake news. But then will take a single article someone mentions or references in a tweet at face value with little to no research of their own. It's really simple to do, use your search engine of choice, look up said event, and try to find reputable sources that corroborate the story being told. If I can find multiple news sources talking about something and give a quick read through some articles, so can you. Great vid Ryan as always!

This was a rough event but showed how easily countries can destabilize others even only for a moment, just by using the internet.

I appreciate how you walk through the path of tracing back on these so others can learn to do the same. It's not difficult, but if you havn't done it before you might not know where to start/what logic to follow.

People on SM were saying it was a Muslim extremist from Syria. I have no idea where they were getting their info. But if the cops didn't cover up other muslim crimes including the beating of a police officer people would trust them.

Hey Ryan, thanks for creating the video. Southport is my home town and I'm sure many like me are saddened by everything that has happened. It's sad that there's people who will use a tragedy as an excuse for violence. Take care man and keep up the hard work.

Most British people couldn't tell you the difference between MI5 or MI6 due to them being so similarly named. This story comes amidst a melting pot of suspicion and unease about the frequency of 'random' knife attacks in Britain, e.g. the soldier who was stabbed outside a barracks in Kent last week, and machete wielding gangs fighting in streets (e.g. reported in Southend-on-sea today). These incidents are real and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine has stirred up a lot of feelings, and indeed became an issue with UK politics with up to 5 MPs winning seats in Parliament on a prominent pro-Palestine/anti-Israel platform and many people been exposed to protests and counter protests along prominent religious-ethnic backgrounds. There is a theme in the UK, and also parts of Europe, that these events are no longer called terrorist attacks and are deemed lone madman with a gun/lorry/knife - none of which quells the unease about why these seemingly are happening more often than they did in the past. Overall, the Merseyside Police lost the information war. People,, not just thugs, are shocked by this massacre, want information and are demanding answers. It is a very sensitive issue in the UK and they need to move quickly to reassure the public as holding back information undermines the trust the public has in the police. This creates the grounds that bad actors with deliberate misinformation, can persuade those with poor vetting on their sources can further disseminate. The truth will eventually come out, as the Crown Prosecution Service in the UK can waive the anonymity of those under 18 (and has a recent record of doing so). P.s. and of course, good video as ever Ryan.

Something interesting you pointed out: Rwanda was used by the UK as a place to process asylum seekers / undocumented migrants looking to enter the UK. The deal was to settle migrants there, rather than the UK. Kier Starmer recently disposed of the Rwanda deal, which upset many right-wingers in the UK. That's probably why the country was brought up

As someone who grew up visiting Southport from the local area and spent time studying in at the sixth form college adjacent to where the tragedy happened, its still surreal seeing the small seaside town town hit global news. Manufactured outrage/misinformation/fake news is a real problem, not made better in the UK by years of failings in the education system and the growth in popularity of political parties that stand on anti-immigration. Keep up the great work.

Thanks Ryan. Tragic incident, and that some people may use this as just a means to profit from internet ads is just sick. But in today's world, right now, the rabbit hole could go way deeper. Questions like, was this teenager recruited by someone else who filled his head with some BS about it being for 'a cause'? Was this 'recruiter' actually a real person? or was the 'recruiter' just another link in the chain, himself duped by a foreign/ domestic actor with a broader agenda? It may sound stupid...but nowadays it seems you have to ask... that's a big problem.

The "rumours" about Rwanda have nothing to do with the Rwanda Plan, as some commenters suggest. It's now a confirmed fact that the murderer's parents are immigrants from Rwanda. He really is 100% "ethnic Rwandan". I don't think there is confirmation on his tribal background (Hutu or Tutsi) yet.

I have always greatly enjoyed your unbiased coverage and commentary. Since this video was posted, the name has been released, mostly because he turns 18 next week so the judge has released the name. The outrage that was caused was designed to appeal to folk who are angry at everything remotely foreign or immigrant sounding. The guy does deserve everything coming to him (hopefully lasting and painful) but the scenes we have seen since do nothing for anyone.

Worth noting there are prominent British RU-vidrs covering this on location as if it were a party. Absolutely vile behaviour from them. Theyre also echoing any kind of information on their videos, be it accurate or inaccurate with no due diligence in place to verify

Thank you for this, so much disinformation surrounding this story in particular. Reading a comment thread on one news video about it lead to the conclusion that the suspect was Syrian with Rwandan parents and was born in Cardiff, Wales! People really in to stop and think if the things they’re believing actually make sense.

Also impersonation. In the UK channel 3 is historically the number of ITV Independent TV. It's well regarded and has a reputation comparable with the BBC. NOW is a separate UK TV streaming service.

The land of origin actually changed every day. The first day it was Somalia, then Syria, and finally Rwanda. What made it work so well, I think, was that it wsa the end of a series of events over the last weeks. I am a left leaning pro-immigration guy from Germany that had watched the british news for about a week and I was outraged! I still am. This is really weird. Leaving the information space completely to the disinformation people is not a good idea. Leaving a grieving public to these people with nothing than platitudes is not a good idea.

Here's what I don't understand: the person who committed the terrible crime in Southport has been revealed to be someone who was born in Cardiff (for US viewers that's in Wales which is in the UK which makes him a UK citizen) and the family later moved to the village of Banks in Lancashire (also in UK). There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever he had any links with the Islamic faith. So why are the knuckle-dragging followers of Tommy Robinson (real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) still using this tragedy as an excuse to engage in anti-migrant and anti-Islam riots around the UK?
