Disk/Washer vs. Cylindrical Shell...when to use which?

There are two ways to find the volume of three dimensional objects in calculus: the disk washer method and the cylindrical shell method.
What is the disk washer method? What is the cylindrical shell method? That's exactly what I'm going to talk about today. I will show you the differences between the disk washer and the cylindrical shell method. Most importantly, you need to know when to use which method in different situations.
In a nutshell, if your solid of revolution looks like a cucumber cut in half (shown in the video), then you use the dish washer method. If your solid of revolution does not look like a cucumber cut in half, then you use the cylindrical shell method. I did two examples in the video with the shape rotated around the y axis and the x axis and then I use the disk washer and cylindrical shell method to find the volume.

Understanding the orientation of the element piece is important for setting up these integrals. For the disk/washer method the element piece must be perpendicular to the axis of revolution. For the shell method the element piece must be parallel to the axis of revolution. If the element piece is vertical then the integral must be in terms of x. If the element piece is horizontal then the integral must in terms of y. As for as which technique is better to use that really depends on the functions given. I would include the element pieces in the diagram and label the differentials, overall good video.

What is an element piece?
@DoctrinaMathVideos
@DoctrinaMathVideos Год назад
@@gone3394 The element piece sometimes referred to as the "representative" piece (vertical or horizontal depending on the axis of revolution) that when rotated around the given axis of revolution produces a disk. The concept is that when we take the sum of these disks it gives us an approximate volume. If we want the exact volume then we take the limit of the sum as the number of elements increase. The key to setting up these volume problems is understanding the dynamics of the element piece which I introduce in my calculus 1 course since the element piece plays an important role in finding the area underneath the curve as well.

For the first example, you need to use the Dish Washer method. If the shape looks like a cucumber cut in half, you must use the dish washer method. If the shape looks like "two hills next to each other", you need to use the cylindrical shell method. Hope this helps!

for both these methods, do we always have to rotate from the y-axis?
@QuocDatPhung
@QuocDatPhung 7 месяцев назад
Not necessarily. This is an introduction to these two methods. If you want to see rotations in the x-axis, you can see find it in my Calculus playlist here: ru-vid.com/group/PLeTO6OT3-FKmuCeO97iKt_Aibx-a938JA

I use Sketchbook for drawing the diagrams/writing. I use OBS for filming the current screen as well as me in the background. I use ShotCut for editing :) I hope that helps! is the radius of a cylinderical shell being equal to x universal for all equations?
@QuocDatPhung
@QuocDatPhung Год назад
No. The video clarifies when to use cylindrical or disk washer method. But I have videos with solving more cylindrical shell problems, which you can find here: ru-vid.com/group/PLeTO6OT3-FKmuCeO97iKt_Aibx-a938JA

How come we use dy for the first one, but for the second, we use dx?
@QuocDatPhung
@QuocDatPhung 6 месяцев назад
In the first example, we're adding all the disks along the y axis. That's why we use dy. The second example we're adding all the disks along the x axis. That's why we use dx. Please look at the diagrams. Let me know if this makes sense!

So, for problem number 2, when we rotate it around the y-axis, does it naturally create that cylinder shape due to that a gap? I'm just wondering where it come from. sry if my questions are kinda weird, but whenever I think we are rotating around the y-axis or x-axis, I automatically think dy or dx
