Lucky bird inside a guilded cage Golden words spoke by an ancient sage Everything you may have in life Still, all you hold is dust Must I yearn forever to be free? Free to climb a tree and ponder Free to wander There's no desire I hold fonder Than to be, simply me, to be free How ungrateful is this lucky bird Spurning privlege for one simple word Freedom to stretch these golden wings Freedom to touch the sky Why some would ask would she want to be Free to throw away a treasure Born with pleasure I'd sacrifice riches beyond measure Just a girl, with a boy What a perfect fantasy To find love, to feel joy To be really free
@@missclairejane4259 Oh wow, thanks. You should post these on Genius lyrics; I haven't looked in a while but last I did I couldn't find them anywhere, which is a shame, cuz it's such a great song. Are you sure tho she's saying "born with pleasure" and not "for with pleasure" in the second verse?
Honestly I like it better than Speechless. To Be Free is more charming, subtle yet powerful, and it fits the rest of the soundtrack better. Speechless is your average empowerment pop song.
To Be Free Lyrics provided by Jennifer Marie Words and music by Alan Menken Lucky bird inside a guilded cage Golden words spoke by an ancient sage Everything you may have in life Still, all you hold is dust Must I yearn forever to be free? +Maya Origel I'm confused. The "Lyrics" are "by Jennifer Marie" and then you say "Words and music by Alan Menken." So..... are you saying Marie and Menken both did the lyrics or is there something I'm misreading?
What I want to know is why apparently this song isn't gonna be in the Broadway version of Aladdin. It's pretty good and I feel like Jasmine needs another song in it.
I think they brought back the cut song from the film "Call Me a Princess"! (not something I was happy to hear!) I always felt for some reason there should be words to this piece of music sung by Jasmine when I was little listening to it on my cassette sound track :-)
@@daviddyster4145 Ok, I wouldn’t say the Aladdin reboot was “Disney destroying its own legacy.” Because instead of being a carbon copy of the original, Aladdin 2019 mostly did its own thing for the most part (unlike other Disney live action reboots…….yeah, I’m looking at you, Lion King 2019). While it did admittedly have some laughably bad moments and plenty of flaws, there are still plenty of good things about it too. Will Smith actually did a great job as The Genie, he mostly just did his own thing as The Genie while paying tribute to the late Robin Williams. And while Speechless is inferior to “To Be Free,” it honestly wasn’t a bad song in my opinion, and Naomi Scott was pretty much the only person in the movie who actually COULD sing. This is all just my opinion, it’s absolutely ok if you disagree with me because we as human beings are made to think differently in life.
DeeDee Magno Hall is they only person that I think sing this song well. I've seen this show so many times and none of the Jasmines can sing this song as well as well as DeeDee. This song is my least favorite song from the show now because of how other people sing this song. I always drift off during this song when I watch the show now. No one can ever replace DeeDee, she was amazing. I'm so happy I got to see her in Wicked and then again recently in If/Then.
+Matheus Campos In Wicked she sings parts of Dancing through life, but her main song was Wicked Witch of the East. She played Nessarose. In If/Then she's a smaller part so she doesn't have any of her own songs, but she has lines in a couple of songs. She not one either of the CDs cause for Wicked she was apart of the San Francisco Cast and If/Then she is in the touring cast.
[After Jafar rubs Genie's lamp] Genie (Mocking Jasmine's singing): ♪Lucky bird inside a gilded cage. (Scrubs himself with a brush, but suddenly stops when he realizes he's been summoned and gets angry)♪ Genie (Normal voice): Al, if you've come here to apologize you just forget it because it's too late! (Suddenly calms down) But since you are here, could you scratch my left shoulder blade? It gets so cramped in here that I...I...I...I... (Sees Jafar in front of him and tosses his brush away as he screams) AHH! A MAN! (Covers the top part of his body)
Menken should write his own lyrics, this song is incredible. Another song Menken wrote the lyrics and music for is "You Can Count on Me," another song that was cut from Aladdin.
Teresa Castillo sang this the best and was the hands down Best Jasmine at DCA. Just phenomenal. She's on GENERAL HOSPITAL now. What a waste! She belongs on Broadway! Love her!
ok this disappointing comment was just sooo late but, if only Aladdin live action put this song instead new song titled speechless which sing by Jasmine also this song never appears on motion picture movie (only the instrument). but has been sung in theater

Spread the word !!! "To Be Free" is NOT being considered for the new stage version of ALADDIN that Disney is currently developing at The 5th Ave theatre in seattle!! If you want this song to have a chance for life on broadway send an email to "feedback" AT "5thavenue" DOT "org" !! Do it now while it's still in previews! let the producers know what a mistake they are making!! Thanks :)
Of all the Disney movies, why did they replace this with Frozen? The latter isn’t even close to having any sort of resemblance to the original story (from what I’ve heard)
does anyone know who wrote the lyrics to this? I know howard died 1/2 way through the filming of aladdin, and this version became public way after, but it just sounds so much like him. Anyone?
Lea Salonga- no solo song DeeDee Magno- To Be Free Courtney Reed- These Palace Walls Naomi Scott- Speechless Why is nobody playing Jasmine having “Call Me a Princess?” Courtney Reed sang it, but not Lea Salonga. Kerry Butler’s version is way iconic.
It's called "Call me a Princess". It was intended to be part of the original Aladdin movie, but it got taken out. Now it's in the Aladdin Off-broadway on 5th Avenue Theatre, but the context is Jasmine sings it to scare her suitors.
