Star Wars. Got the lightsabers, the space wizards, pretty cool stuff. Honestly, I think most people kinda “get” Star Wars. Except for the people that own Star Wars, they have no idea what they’re doing. Over the past decade this brand, that was at one point pretty much the biggest “thing” on the planet, has now become an embarrassing disaster.
It takes a special level of incompetence to achieve this, and while I’m not the first to tackle this topic (and certainly won’t be the last), I feel like 2024 has been a uniquely awful year for Star Wars.
A big budget show, the acolyte got canceled before a second season amongst awful user reviews and low ratings.
Star Wars Outlaws was a flop, to a degree where it’s caused some investors to question whether the game’s publisher Ubisoft should even stay as a public company.
And I just kinda wanted to talk about all of this.

The worst part? As Andor shows, you don't even need to make a show feel particularly like Star Wars for people to see it. You don't need the Force. Or jedi. Or lightsabers. Or Tatooine. Or The Millenium Falcon. Or Han Solo. You can make a Star Wars show that lacks all of that, and people will still want to watch it. All you need is for it to be... good.

I'd argue they killed it by letting a trio of directors create a trilogy of movies without them apparently ever even talking to each other, much less figuring out a coherent plan for how their movies would fit together... I feel disney was trying to kiddify star wars on some level and push disney ethics. What i feel is a good representation of disney sw issues can be found in Star Wars Rebels. At the start, it was very disney. Giving off Alladin in space vibes. The villains were just to nice. Treating the heros like school trouble makers. But then Tarkin shows up, kills two guys for failure and all but the sith guy were mortified. That there is the problem. The disney stuff was just to kiddy. And star wars was meant as a mature show all can enjoy.

The core problem of Disneys star wars is that they are a risk averse company, and as such run and write their stories and brand that way. The best example is the Boba Fett show, where a gruff merc who has no allegiances to anyone gets retconned into a bumbling nice guy, destroying his character and broke the story before it had even started. Star Wars as a franchise was built off of risks, and now its safe, predictable and boring. It's everything it shouldn't be.
@MustraOrdo
@MustraOrdo 5 дней назад
This. Companies being risk averse / safe with what they put out can themselves be at risk for sliding in to irrelevancy.
@DetectiveMekova
@DetectiveMekova 5 дней назад
And the risks it does take, like The Acolyte, are just really weird ones that ends up undermining entire concepts and ideas from the original trilogy. The Last Jedi had risks, but the risks were also really odd. It was meant to almost be an anti-star wars movie. It tried being risky, but it didn't go far enough and so it ended on a safe, cozy note which contradicted like, 75% of the message it had lol. Disney just can't make good marvel or star wars movies or shows anymore. They don't know what humans are, or what humans like. They only know what statistics and lines like.

The problem with Solo wasn't lacking Ford. Fans simply wanted something authentic which Disney is incapable of doing. Getting an actor that looks like young Ford would have helped (there was one guy that people wanted) but the main issue is that it didn't feel like Star Wars. This is the problem with all of Disney's stuff. It simply doesn't feel like Star Wars. It feels less like Star Wars than fan films. This goes deeper than a lack of soul.

I've got a friend that compulsively tears apart media because the way he cares is the hell of coming up with ways for it to be better and being powerless to update the thing with his improvements beyond fanfiction and forum ranting. That's why Star Wars fans "hate" Star Wars, they love it so much that it angers them when it sucks. Similarly, people in fanbase, while outsiders might see them as odd, are also seen by outsiders as authorities. If you want to watch a funny B-movie horror flick to rag on with friends, you go and ask the person that swears by their VHS collection if they have any suggestions. Logically then, if a common consumer asks a Star Wars fan "Is there a Star Wars movie I should watch before I see this Acolyte show?" they will be told, "Skip that one, it teased a sequel it's never going to get. We should start by watching the movies called episodes 4-6, and see what if anything you end up liking about them." and the common consumer will not watch Acolyte.

The bleeding started with Rian Johnson. There were issues, JJ did not do anybody any favors with his first movie, but there was a lot that could have been built off of and some of the bad stuff could have been swept aside by a writer that had more talent than ego. Johnson was riding higj before his star wars movie. Everything he touched was turning to gold and he was given a sub par set up for a movie. So, instead of running with the sub par start he decided to slam the reset button. He had to keep the characters and the overall plot but everything he could cut was cut. He believed he could save star wars and instead he left a second movie in a trilogy with no ties to the first and no story set up for the third. The last movie was awful but there was never any hope for it. Then we got Mando. Mando was great, Mando sold toys, Mando was popular. So, like most idiotic leadership, they teathered everything they could to the successful thing hoping it would drag everything else along with it rather than drag it down like what ALWAYS happens. Throw in Boba Fett and then tie his series to it. Throw in Luke then Ashoka and have their series tie into it. Mando became a bloated mess as the talentless hacks clung on to it for dear life. It drowned as a result. So, movies failed, good tv series were failing, what is a moronic exec to do? Burn it all! If nothing seems to work throw as much into the pipe and hope something sticks. Doesn't matter if it makes sense, if it is even remotely related to the IP, or has any relation to anything in the universe, we are bleeding gotta rip at the wound to heal it! So, everything became rushed. Movies that were obviously supposed to be movies got stretched into TV series because MOAR! Every character gets a spin off! Hype is all we have, pump the member berries! Now nobody cares. They beat the dead horse until it became dust and are still trying to sell dust rides at $50 a pop. Disney Star Wars is over. Star Wars as an IP is not though. There are a LOT of good stories a passionate studio or fan could adapt and make work. Fans will come back, just not for Disney anymore. Sell it off, spin it into its own company, then use existing stories (and stick to them!!!) and fans will return. Disney won't do that though, $50 dust ride until they put it in their vault and try releasing it once a moon until it seems popular again is all we have to look forward to.

With Marvel I'm not so sure, Deadpool & Wolverine managed to gross over 1.3 billion dollars at the box-office and well received by audiences, you could argue that it's sort of a 20th Fox movie, but it has a lot of connections with the MCU, there's also the recent X-Men '97 and Spider-Man 2 for the PS5 was a success for Sony IE. Though that actually brings me to mention that there's a bigger problem in regards why Marvel has better chances to still be popular while Star Wars struggles, and is that Star Wars is a very U.S. centric franchise, though SW has considerable following in some countries, Disney wanted Star Wars to be the next big thing at a global level, we saw how hard Disney tried to push Star Wars in China with Ep. VII, but Star Wars films don't resonate that well in China, and in some other Asian countries, except maybe for Japan, and even in Japan foreign films don't perform that well as they used to (Avatar 2 wasn't that big of a success in Japan, despite the original grossing over 100 million there), and it's mostly due to the fact that there isn't a lot of nostalgia for Star Wars in various countries across the world, but super heroes, like Spider-Man, are much more well known internationally

Since Disney got their hands on it and gave it to EA we’ve had two mediocre Battlegrounds, a mediocre Squadrons, an okay Jedi Fallen Order, a pretty good Jedi Survivor, and an Ubislop Jedi Outlaws. In ELEVEN YEARS. And that’s just the games, they screwed this up in all other avenues including toys, books, comics, etc. Unbelievable.

What do you mean dead? What do you mean when you say “Star Wars is dead”? Most Star Wars stuff is still successful, they’re still making lots of projects with books, comics, and shows. Soon, more video games too. Lots of people are still into the lore too.

One thing that we learned about TLJ is that fans want nostalgia, not a break on the status quo. Disney understood and we got RotS, a movie that felt similar to Return of the Jedi. Just look at Mando; the moment Gouru became a marketable character, the series went to mediocrity, and stopped being innovative because Baby Yoda prints money. Both Disney and the Fandom aren’t killing Star Wars; but they are making sure that the next generations forgets about this franchise.

I think the problem is writers who refuse to build a story from the ground up. All of the new stuff (except Andor) has a problem of clearly being written with a few moments in mind, then writing a sloppy story around those moments.

I see Disney star wars as fanfiction, very bad fanfiction, just because you own the IP doesn't mean what you make is canon.

The Part that really annoys me is they did a disney did a trio of really good star wars movies. They just happen to be called guardians of the galaxy. Seriously get a good director, have them write the three movies as a solid vision, and do them at the same time so you can actually follow a plot line without your cast dying (drops rose at both leia and ackbars grave). and yes Tem and Ming deserve more love and more kicking of ass.

They also have a pretty funny parody show, the Orville, it's obviously not an official Star Trek product but at least the creators of that show really love Star Trek and want to make something good.

I don't think Disney has handled the franchise perfectly but to put it all the blame solely on Kathleen Kennedy's feet when Bob Iger was the person that chose to throw out the Lucas' treatments for an ST, and also rush the movies so they could make their profit back as quickly as possible, you start to understand the issue is larger than a single woman. On the streaming side of things, most of the shows aren't as bad as people make it out to be. It's more of an issue that they're not all good enough to be must watches, so you end up with a lot of shows that do have an audience but don't capture the masses. Also the jab at Leslye is really cheap, there is nothing to indicate she knew what her boss was up, as an Acolyte fan I would've liked to see more of her vision and I respect those that don't want that but we can criticize the show without resorting to cheap character assassination.

Andor is the ONLY reason I still care at all about anything new from Star Wars. My entire friend group agrees. We're done watching child friendly toy commercials dressed up like a sci-fi/space opera. After Andor Season 2, we'll probably be done with the franchise unless they start making some more intelligent, adult focused content.

This makes think about the idea of being a fan and at some point you have to look at the thing you like and ask "Do I still like this?". I did that with Paper Mario, I just decided "No I don't like these games any more, I'll just play the old ones that I know I like and ignore anything new".

The woke BS is one of the, if not the main, reasons Star Wars is dead. Characters with zero development, no respect for the established lore and universe. An insistence on catering to audiences who never cared that much about the brand in the first place. One could go on with many more examples, but who cares? tHe FoRcE iS fEmAlE!1!!
