If you'd like to chat about the video in a deeper manner with others, check out the discord community: discord.gg/zxHp8MU I have a channel just for discussing main channel videos
I think you would like some of the discussions that either Jonathan Pageau or Nicholas Kotar are having. Especially pertaining to story forms and the importance of fairy tales.
Your take on Alice in wonderland was like a lightbulb to me, especially since that story is literally my earliest memory. It’s true: Alice doesn’t settle, she has a desire for discovery and a craving for new experiences and knowledge and now that I’ve realised that it seems that it’s subconsciously had a major influence on me as an actual person as well as just me as a storyteller. Thank you for highlighting that and helping me realise!
I didn't know about the criticism surrounding Peter Pan. I am 28 now, and I do tend to glorify my life as a student vis-a-vis the life as a professional that I have been leading for quite some time. Thank you for reminding me that it's not necessary for things to be that way.
Yeah! I'm glad I was able to help you with that. The child in us that pushes us to be imaginative or curious isn't something that should be thrown away, but we have to learn that adulthood is an opportunity to actually direct our lives in the way we most desire
Hey everyone, I’m a new member of her Discord server and I think there is a lot of potential to make real change to our lives through this kind of analysis and then by following it up with actual practical change via the personal growth structure she is laying out. Jillian, this first video in your new content style is full of substance to dissect and get practical meaning out of. Bravo! Look forward to discussing it on the server. Let’s get started on positive change!
I would love to hear your thoughts and insight on the villains of some of these stories and what they represent archetypally. You touched on the step-sisters (maybe the step-mother is more significant as a negative embodiment of the archetype of the mother?), but Captain Hook and Gaston would be interesting. as well as Arthur's brother and his unfitness to wield the sword of the King. Gaston i'm not so clear on (is he a tyrant? a failed warrior archetype?), clearly his arrogance and other traits are repulsive to Belle, although in contemporary society (1950's - 1990's at least) he's the 'obvious choice' for a partner. I guess he's kind of a Jock haha . Captain Hook can obviously be interpreted as a negative representation of the father, mean-spirited, devoid of and contemptuous of innocence. (I guess he views this as a weakness) perhaps this is Barrie's conception of his own father. This symbolism is expanded upon in perhaps my favourite childhood movie 'Hook'. Robin Williams as a failed father goes back to Neverland (childhood), finds and rescues his inner child, realises he WANTS to be a father, defeats Hook (his shadow?) and integrates the experience to become a loving husband and father at the end of the movie. Lastly I would like to express my admiration and respect for what you are doing with your channel. It's hard to believe you are 21 considering your level of understanding of these concepts. Makes one hopeful for the future. Best wishes, Tommy Slightly personal sidenote, but as a 31 y.o. 'Peter Pan' , my guess at the solution is that I have to confront my own Father/shadow. A psychedelic experience with my younger brother revealed the resentment i have towards my father, something I had been hiding from for years, along with all personal responsibility (Easy way to waste a decade). Powerful stuff!
This is a great video on the subject for anybody (and there are a LOT of us, just look at the popularity of surrogate-father figure Jordan Peterson) who is struggling with the same issue. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AIKgRtmbIkM.html
In fact (and I really ought to stop here), here is Peterson's analysis of Peter Pan. he attributes Hook's tyranny to his fear of death (ironically this is also Pan's ultimate fear, probably all of ours). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H-ckxQSutO4.html He gets a bit angry about it haha
Yeah, it's mind boggling to think of how much influence Disney has had on us. I love to talk about it because it really shows how much power stories can have and what happens when they're shown to such a large audience
Because with the new direction it's going in, keeping the branding as The Director's Cut didn't really fit because it won't only be about directing going forwards. So I switched it to reflect the more personal brand that it will be
