I mean Disney was always that even in its golden years. The problem was in 2023 Disney wasn't just Disney the animator. It was Disney the studio that owned or bought out a good chunk of media companies at a time when the very IP-driven culture people craved a decade ago was running out of steam. So that's not exactly Disney's fault, it just became the posterchild for outrage at this culture of our own creation.
@DukeSkylocker
@DukeSkylocker 3 месяца назад
I mean, Walt Disney was so mad at animators asking for decent wages that he had Dumbo basically take the piss out of them (hence, the sequence with the clowns that get drunk and then march off singing "we're going to ask the big boss for a raise". As bad as Bob Iger is, I can't imagine him doing something so petty) so it's not like they ever had a reputation for treating their employees well.

This movie could have been better if, instead of having a normal “mc is always right and villain is always wrong”, they could have made it a learning experience. Granting everyones wishes isn’t the best solution, and it probably won’t ever be. The story should have been that Asha wanted to grant everyones wishes, but doesn’t understand when Magnifico says no. He let’s her see what sort of chaos insues, and in the end he or Asha uses their wish to fix it all. She learns the importance of limits, and Magnifico is able to step down.

@@sallyroslin4634 Exactly this! Disney's worse downfall was making him human. They made him too relatable. I wanted to hate him going into my first watching of the movie, but the more I watch it, the more I can see he's not the actual villain. He's actually just a human with flaws and undiagnosed mental disorders. Not only is it demonizing mental illness, but it's also enforcing the stigma that men shouldn't show any kind of weakness. That men aren't allowed to have bad days or show any emotions, they're just supposed to 'man up'. And I just can't hate someone who is literally just acting like a human being. As someone who is married to someone who has panic attacks almost all day, everyday, I could literally see the signs that he was becoming overwhelmed and starting to have anxiety because of how selfish his people were. They weren't focused on their safety, but their own wants and needs. Poor Magnifico just wants to protect his people as a king should, and he's turned into the villain, even though they made this character sympathetic and relatable.

And you know what's the worst part? The entire movie was him looking for an apprentice that would take care of the Kingdom of Rosas. Because everyone was so focused on their own happiness, no one was willing to take on his role. He knew someone self-centered could abuse this power and start granting wishes carelessly for themselves or others, causing chaos. That's why he was disappointed over and over again when his apprentices only wanted to get close to him to get personal favors. They didn't care about the common good, only about themselves. Asha was the most shameless one, doing it on day one. He could've used his powers for ANYTHING, yet his only focus was to keep peace in Rosas, so no one had to suffer like he did. And of course, he went crazy when some kid started trampling over his life's work as a temper tantrum, thinking they knew better. Because their grandpa (WHO WAS OLDER THAN THE KING AND PROBABLY CHOOSE TO MOVE IN) couldn't learn how to play the guitar. Scratch that, he wanted people to like what he played and feel inspired by what he played. Imagine having that power over people, that's actually really dangerous.

i think the king even said it at one point, his wish was too vague. he wanted to inspire people, but never stated 'inspire them to do what?' like sure, maybe he inspires them to cure cancer, or invent indoor plumbing in this medieval setting, or become a serial killer, who knows!

Omg yes! Asha seemed so self centered and tone deaf. They could’ve made a great movie if they focused on the king and his thoughts but it was just awful. I don’t think the king was the villain, I do agree the way he handled the situation was horrible.
@victorsardaneta8727
@victorsardaneta8727 3 месяца назад
@@gemart7343 Oh yeah, absolutely. I do believe he knew how easily corruptible someone in his position was, which is why he wanted a good apprentice to take the role from him. But years of being exposed to people's selfishness and lack of appreciation slowly made him callous. How many generations of possible apprentices just looking to gain power? The breaking point was when Asha brought a literal star to break the order of things. So he kinda went, “F it, if Rosas gets ruined, might as well be by me. After all, who else deserves it, but me?” He fell into the corruption he tried to avoid and that he was hoping his true apprentice wouldn't fall into. King Magnifico is the perfect example of someone with good will and intentions that eventually became disillusioned by the world and the people. Added to that, his past traumas made him a bit too paranoid and controlling, eventually transforming him into what he sought to destroy. He would've been an amazing character to explore, and about how one person carrying such responsibility gets affected. But Disney fumbled HARD.

I think Disney just needs some new perspectives… a LOT of Disney artists are taught to draw a very very specific way, animate a specific way… story tell a specific way. A lot go to the exact same schools. This movie to me feels like the ultimate culmination of that idea. Most people talk about the music being lame, or how the main character is sooo goofy silly girl like Rapunzel… but what stands out most to me is how it’s animated. Not necessarily visually in design but more so how the characters actually MOVE and their facial expressions. You start to get a sense that there’s maybe 5 people at Disney in charge of actually coming up with mannerisms and expressions… so inevitably it feels like 5 actors are playing every character in the movie, in all of the movies. Like there are mannerisms this protag does that I’ve seen done very similarly in recent movies and I’m like “oh so so and so was in charge of how this character moves AND Mirabel from Encanto” In my opinion it leads all of the characters to feel samey in more than just personality but physicality.

In my personal opinion, the reason Asha lacks a character arc is because the team originally wrote Wish as a love story. The wishing star is supposed to be a star boy, and Asha's love interest. Asha and the star boy are soul mates; it was mentioned that they had an emotional journey. The star boy was said to be inspired by Peter Pan with a Mickey Mouse charm. I heard that the main conflict that Asha is supposed to face is something related to the Star Boy sacrifice or something, and King Magnifico's wife is supposed to be a villain too; they're supposed to be a villain power couple.

Not to mention, as the only expert magic user in the kingdom, he of his own choice decided to use an evil book knowing full well what the consequences are. Little does he know, absorbing the energy of wishes, especially bad ones, makes you turn evil. He never realizes this, and by the movie’s climax he’s completely lost it. @@Byssa6 That's way more cohesive than what Disney wrote. Their character shifts were too abrupt, with the King turning from benevolent to tyrannical like flicking a switch and the Queen not even trying to save him. If he was lured into corruption by a genuine desire to good, and she was a party to/witness to his descent into madness but ultimately chose to oppose him, it would have made for more compelling storylines for both of them. Since it's a kid's movie, the ending might then be a bit too tragic but say, Instead of the stupid song at the end and Asha becoming the new wish granter, the people of Rosas all wish to free their King from evil and they go on as before but with a humbled, more receptive King and a more informed populace.

I’m surprised Alex didn’t talk about how King Magnifico’s “villain song” didn’t sound anything like it. I’ve seen people talk about how it resembles a pop song, which it kinda does. Someone in the comments made a good point by saying that when they had the Lion King soundtrack playing, their sibling asked to skip Scar’s song “Be Prepared” because it always scared him. That’s what a villain song should do. Even Scar’s design is creepy. You have Poor Unfortunate Souls, Mother Knows Best, Hellfire, Friends on the Other Side. And apparently Asha was supposed to have a love interest named Starboy. It would’ve been nice to have a love story like the original Disney movies.

Funny thing is it is possible to make an upbeat, catchy villain song and it was released just a couple weeks after Wish. Wonka was a surprisingly good movie and I've been listening to the soundtrack since I watched the movie. The villains have a song and it's campy and catchy. It's more funny than scary, and yet they are still intimidating throughout the movie despite this. You know Disney is going downhill when WB is making a better musical and film than they are.

I think this move completely misunderstood the power hungry leader archetype. The make it seem like he’s a tyrant purely because he wants to hang on to his power. Like, no shit? He’s the leader of a kingdom. No competent leader would put himself in positions where he can lose his power. Imagine if the president of a country was constantly doing stupid things to get himself impeached. They wanted Magnifico to be a villain so bad but they didn’t show him doing anything villainous, until he literally got corrupted by Evil Plot Device tm.
@SpiderkillersInc
@SpiderkillersInc 3 месяца назад
There’s actually a deleted scene where he eats wishes to become a hulking, brutish monster and reveals he never cared about the people’s wishes, even snacking on them at times to get power. I think the issue was that Disney wanted a complex antagonist, but the Disney villains of the past owned their villainy and that was wonderful to watch. They were all power hungry madmen with no regard for anything but themselves. But trying to make Magnifico complex just makes him confusing. If they’d kept the pretense that he pretends to care to hold onto power but steadily becomes more unhinged as time goes on, that’d be more compelling for a villain.
@saddesklunch2544
@saddesklunch2544 3 месяца назад
Personally, I think I would’ve had him be the same until he crushes the first wish. He gets such a rush from doing it that he immediately becomes addicted and tries to keep riding that high. For the rest of the movie, everything he does is to hold onto the wishes so he can crush them. Maybe near the end he starts trying to take the wishes of everyone, not just the adults, so he can feed his addiction. And instead of him getting locked in the mirror, Asha’s able to talk him down and get him to give everyone’s wishes back (the ones that are left, at least) and get help. This would allow the Queen to be good (she just wants to help her unwell husband), and explain the King’s sudden heel turn out of nowhere. It also fits with the modern Disney theme of no one person being the villain, but rather an idea (Magnifico’s not the problem here, it’s his addiction). Only issues I see are that it muddles the almost-an-allegory of the wishes being childhood dreams. We may also need to delete some earlier scenes to fit that thread in in a reasonable amount of time. There’s also the fact that I came up with this off the top of my head when Alex played the wish crushing scene, so it likely has a number of holes in it. No idea how to fix the rest of the movie though, as I have not seen it.

When I saw a trailer for it in the theater when Magnifico said most wishes wouldn’t be granted I thought “the movie makes it seem like it’s a bad thing, but there are wishes out there that shouldn’t be granted.” Also when I saw destroyed wishes give you power, what if you just destroyed the bad wishes and granted the good ones? I'd also like to point out that movies like toy story and cars took many years to make, so it makes sense we would be in a lull for movies right now seeing how many recent massive productions we had in the last decade. We were getting multiple movies almost every year for a while it felt like, it's a lot of material to burn through in a short amount of time. This movie probably should have had more time to be worked on but they had to rush out a movie for the anniversary of Disney because like I said, they pushed out too many movies in a short span of time. Someone else made a comment that Encanto should have been released for the anniversary movie instead of this and I honestly agree. Encanto was very well received overall, and well produced. Kids and adults alike absolutely loved it and the songs made waves on social media and awards shows alike. Delaying that release to the anniversary would have given them another year or two or production time to finish fine tuning this movie. Imo lol

They could have gone another way, like "you don't have to hold on to your past and one single wish/idea/desire", and learning to have different wishes and desires as they live and grow older. I remember watching a short on this & the person summed it up pretty well. It was how in almost all Disney movies it's "wants" versus "needs" How a character wants something in the beginning & throughout the story they get what they needed, not what they wanted. In this movie she just legit gets what she's wants. There's nothing more to it. There's no real journey. And that's where it falls very flat.
@GodwynDi
@GodwynDi 3 месяца назад
And its more nefarious than that. Most of the stories involve the want not actually being a good thing, or having consequences involved in it. Overcoming that and learning that things aren't as simple as just wanting something is an important part of the character growth and an important lesson to teach children. Wish goes directly against that. It says give in to the desires you want now, don't think about or worry about consequences. Asha and the Star are the villains of the film.

Asha could have been the voice of pragmatism while all the city is in chaos due to their wishes being fulfilled one after the other. This song matchs the vibe. I thought they had a really good 7 year run starting with The Princess and the Frog in 2009. Then they had Tangled, Winnie the Pooh, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, and Moana. And they were all GREAT. But Moana is the last non-Pixar movie they had that I really loved. And that was 8 years ago. Since then it’s been a mediocre Frozen sequel, a bad Ralph sequel, Raya (fine but forgettable), Encanto (overrated and forgettable), Strange World (straight garbage) and Wish (top to bottom fail).

@@lilac3266 Meh, the songs were fun, but there was basically no real point to the plot. I watched it, expecting something great, and it was basically just "oh no, grammy wants us to be perfect, it's so much pressure" The grandmother doesn't even apologize for making everyone feel bad, life just goes on like it did before the Casa started to crumble. Decent allegory to real life, but not all that entertaining.

I haven't watched the movie myself, and quite frankly after Alex talking about it, I don't see any reason to either. Which... that's kind of a depressing mindset to have when Disney was a part of your childhood. 100 years anniversary? It has ALL the potential to bring those older generations back together in one-sitting. If just they had done something memorable. I totally agree that the premise actually could've been really interesting. I can just imagine it: A kingdom is built on wishes; the wishes are taken from the people as a metaphor for them growing up. A film premise that COULD reflect how those generations in the real world(the viewers) have grown up over the past 100 years. But as the movie progresses, the characters learn to reunite with their wishes, learning the valuable lesson that. a) wishes can't be taken from us. Our wishes(the viewers' childhood dreams) remain valid as grownups. It's alright to be a kid. or b) wishes don't need to be fulfilled by a fairy, going to Neverland... or having a king fulfill them. As a grownup, you can still live your dreams or try to, at least. Because grownups aren't hallow baby machines. They're still people, but people who have to adjust because they no longer have the freedom that children have. And, rather than portraying the king as a stereotypical antagonist driven by cliché motives of world domination and power, the film could introduce a nuanced perspective. He had a wish, too, which was to make the world a better place. He could be an example of an adult who tries to fulfill their genuine dream but fails because... Again, it's a dream. Wistful and innocent thinking doesn't make the dream less valid. It's a bittersweet reality that while dreams may not materialize in their entirety, the journey toward them holds intrinsic value, encouraging individuals to persist in their pursuit in their dreams, regardless of the final end result. That's how I wish Disney had made their 100th anniversary movie. Something with meaning.

You should watch the movie. It's not as bad as people say. It's trendy to hate Disney so they are nitpicking every detail. But as a all the movie is alright. It's not a masterpiece but it's fun to watch and the message is good. The only real issue is that the movie is rushed and so the motivation and growth of the characters can feel like they come out of nowhere if you're not paid attention.

The thing that bothered me the most about this whole animation was: The protagonist's hair being 100% glued to her right shoulder. It jiggles a little bit here and there to... simulate an animation I guess... but it hanging on her right shoulder for almost the entirety of the movie (oh dang, except here 8:44 I guess animators remembered that her hair could move), really, really, really, reeeeaaally bothered me. I imagined her being a girl with a very stiff neck, as that would be the only way for her hair to be always perfectly hanging 100% on her right shoulder, not mattering her movements or the position of her body.

I was actually very excited when the trailer came out, like the girl's name Asha was literally an Indian name meaning wish. But then the movie crushed my dreams and expectations. They could have made the movie 100 times better if they had a solid theme like romance or friendship. The original idea of having a star boy, who falls in love with her was a good plot too. But apparently, Disney had decided no more love stories Edit: The name meaning was like a little fun fact for me that's why I shared. It's the same thing as seeing a character of your culture in the mainstream media. There is a big chance they would completely butcher the character with stereotypes and whatnot but before you are disappointed you have the right to feel excited.

I agree that Asha is a really beautiful name. It’s pretty much the most unique thing she has going for her. When your character’s coolest trait is their name (and maybe also voice actor), you know you’ve screwed up with them.

So you were excited because "oh, an Indian name! Disney chose _my_ people to exploit this time!" ? Just odd in _that_ being the thing that made you excited -- it'd be like me getting excited to hear a Boudica movie is being made (because Éirinn go Brách) only to realize it's more of a fantasy mockery than anything.... _that totally didn't happen and I'm definitely not still salty._ It's a bit ironic... the King who wants to take peoples worry away by making them forget their wishes only to harness it later for his own gain and power is an _astoundingly_ apt analogy for modern Disney. Let you see your wish of an Indian inspired Princess only to dash it away by making her extremely cookie cutter, zero ties to the inspiration, little love and no heart to the tale, all so King Mickey could harness the expectation of your wish to bring "himself" more reach, money, and power. Kind of poetic -- in an E.A. Poe kind of way.

@@Kaspar.C0LD Why does it even matter? You said all of this without reason. The entire purpose of movies and character design is to make them relatable to the audience they are intended for. Just because Disney isn't doing a good job doesn't mean that the idea was terrible.
@Virtual.punk77

@@Kaspar.C0LD Let me remind you, they said that they got excited over Asha *before* they watched the movie itself. Also, that was completely out of pocket. By your logic, every single thing in any movie related to a group of people is exploiting. A movie is meant for being relatable. What I find weird is how you're coming at a person simply because they showed their excitement for knowing that ‘oh, look, that's a cool thing! Asha means wish in Hindi!!’ And you've completely decided to drown out their excitement by saying that it's not valid? Personally, I find that weirder than simply being excited over a name.
