DISNEYLAND - Tomorrowland 1967 (part 1)

In 1967 the area was completely rebuilt with new rides and scenery. The original layout was demolished, and a new set of buildings was erected. The addition of the Carousel theater (Carousel of Progress), Flight to the Moon building, the Adventure Thru Inner Space building, a new Circle-Vision building, and the PeopleMover/Rocket Jets platform, gave Tomorrowland the "World on the Move" theme.

Even though Disneyland is always changing I believe one change should be to step back in time by returning the people mover.

Tomorrowland and Disneyland would both massively benefit from a new PeopleMover. It would give Tomorrowland a much needed D Ticket attraction, perfect for great sightseeing, relaxing, and most importantly still a very futuristic & practical way of transport over 50 years later. It would also greatly alleviate the overcrowding that Disneyland experiences more often these days, as the original PeopleMover was easily the highest capacity attraction in *all* of Disneyland, besting Pirates & Small World at *4,880 guests per hour!* I know it may be expensive, since all of the current tracks and many buildings would have to be rebuilt as Rocket Rods destroyed the originals. But I think it would be worth that spending as today's Tomorrowland is desperately in need of another overhaul anyway. This new PeopleMover could be one of several new, returning & refurbished attractions in this redesign of Tomorrowland. It could at least partly be a similar angle to Paris Discoveryland, but instead looking back at Walt Disney's c.1960's visions of the future, as I also think an updated version of Adventure Thru Inner Space would be amazing. The 1960's design only really fell out of fashion for a few years in the 80's-90's but has become very popular again over the last ~25 years.

This is the Tomorrowland I remember as a kid. My first visit was in 1969 -- I was 4 years old. I remember the entrance had colored fountains then became hanging gardens later in the 70s or early 80s presumably due to the fountains leaking into the ride buildings. This commemorates a time when we had hope for the future. Science and education were a shared American value and the moon landing was just the beginning. Now it's all about pushing merchandise and film franchises. The People Mover and Monorail promised transportation of the future. What happened to our dreams?

"this is one ride you wont find in your ticket book today"...lol I loved those ticket books! It only cost 6 bucks to get into disneyland when i was a kid! The adventure thru ineer space!! I loved that ride. We really thought we were shrinking.. Flight to the moon!!! another fantastic ride for a kid..My god why did they remove these rides?

Sigh. It's watching videos like this that you could easily sink into a sort of time-life-crisis, realizing you can never go back to enjoy the past. I guess the only solution is to actively participate in creating the future. The art of Tomorrowland... the colors, the beauty, the sense of motion and perspective and texture I experienced as a child inspires me to create art. That seems to me to be just about the most effective solution.

Disneyland truly had a magical feel about it back then. Even through the 80's, which I remember as a kid. It might be just because I'm an adult now, but it seems that it is just considered a fun place by the kids. The sense of wonderment is no longer there. But i guess I can't be sure. I'm not a mind reader of today's kids.

All the people who say Disneyland was so much better back in the 80's..I think you're confused with Walt Disney World. Walt Disney World was far better in the 80's and early 90's. Disneyland Resort, on the other hand, is looking better now than it ever has! Look at the re-Imagineered Disney California Adventure, the Diamond Celebration, etc.

Agreed! Walt Disney always felt one of his missions was to educate the public, and especially kids, not just entertain them.. Hence the weekly TV show "Wonderful World of Disney" (or "Color" depending on your era). If Walt could do so in a fun and enjoyable way, so much the better. Sadly that vision seems to have been lost. Now it's just cheap thrills.
@zac613
@zac613 11 лет назад
just a lil FYI... the Adventure Thru Inner Space and Circle Vision buildings were already there... they just got remodeled and added on. Flight to the Moon was already there but the original dome roofs were taken off and just built a big building arund the 2 show theatres. Tomorrowland hasn't really changed... just old things replaced with new things.

I'd like to Mention Tomorrowland has ridiculously had practically all their attraction sponsors including Goodyear, General Electric, and Richfield literally decline either because of not renewing their contract, or going out of business, or just leaving in general and not even caring about the attraction they once sponsored. Anyway, I don't love Disneyland's Tomorrowland until the 70s because more things and additions were happening and I will literally list everything from Tomorrowland's timeline from 1967 to 1997. July 2nd, 1967 is the day the new Tomorrowland opens, September 2nd, 1973, Carousel Of Progress closes, June 27th, 1974, America Sings replaces Carousel Of Progress. July 7th, 1974, a woman by the first name of Debbie gets crushed in the Carousel Theater, July 10th, 1974, America Sings reopens after installation of motion sensors that happened only minutes after Debbie passed away. 1977, Disneyland's Tomorrowland gets a renovation with the Peoplemover going through the new Space Mountain along with Flight To The Moon becoming Mission To Mars. 1982, Tron's Superspeed Tunnel officially becomes a Great Future For The Disneyland Peoplemover. 1986, Star Tours opens in Tomorrowland along with two Droid animatronics that were Birds in America Sings until the Star Tours construction crew went into America Sings one night and took two birds out of the show which still have their webbed feet on the Droid animatronics to this day. August 21st, 1988, America Sings closes permanently, the early 1990s is also when Tomorrowland lost even more attractions which are Mission To Mars, and The Motor Boat Cruise. In August of 1995, the Peoplemover closes Permanently with the Circle Vision 360 to follow up, this leaves only the Rocket Jets, Space Mountain, Star Tours, The Mattahorn, and the Sumberine Voyage remaining as attractions. Finally in 1997, the Rocket Jets permanently closes after 30 Years of operation. The Submarine Voyage also closed in 1997 but reopened a few years later as the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.

If you watch at the begining, the girl is against a rear screen projection movie of torrowland. But to make it look more realistic, there's an older couple and later a younger man that walk in front of the screen as well (you can see the girl's shadow from the overhead studio lights on them as they walk by). Did anybody else notice this?

They need to really think and retweak the 2055 theme that was thrown out the window.From the art paintings/ drawings i've seen the 2055 theme is really neat becuz it's futuristic/scifi but also a tribute to the 1967 Tomorrowland theme.

Futuristic style changes all the time, so I actually think it was brilliant to re-do Tomorrowland into its current retro-futuristic style, a design sensibility that keeps its appeal. Otherwise, trying to guess the future is a never-ending project, and things quickly become outdated and silly-looking.

People movers were kind of cool though, to bad traveling in an amusement ride technology at 15 miles per hour is not really an efficient way to travel in real life. lol
