Sup. I'm Mrs Soap & Clay, I get lye in my eye, and then talk about pH a whole bunch. I also test a whole bunch of different things, and explain what pH is and how it factors into the soaping world, as well as the cleaning of all of the things in general.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

Thank you for explaining this. I tested a cured non clay bar at 10 and was going to call it a loss because I don’t want to irritate anyone. I’ve used it myself and it didn’t irritate me. It’s a special essential oil blend I made and really hate to have to call this beauty a loss. I thought we couldn’t sell it if it’s above 8pH 🤦🏾‍♀️ .Thank you for clearing this up for me

Very interesting and exactly the type of information I was looking for thank you. When making a shampoo bar what is the ideal PH?

Do you know if the pH of a soap relates to acne at all..? I've proved numerous times that if I try to use Dove 'beauty cream bar' it gives me acne about 3 times as bad as normal. I find my skin is best (but not perfect) with either the Sanex or Palmolive bar soaps. I don't know the pH of those though. I feel like the Palmolive leaves me 'driest' after use and maybe that is better for me than feeling 'moisturised' by something like Dove. So I'd also like to ask if you know of anything that will leave me even drier than the Palmolive..? Thanks.

Good info for the beginners

It’s good to give the newbs good information so they can build their soapy knowledge base accordingly. But you would be shocked by the number of seasoned soapers I come in contact with that simply don’t understand pH and what that number means in our world. It’s a confusing topic, so hopefully this helps!

Thank you for your efforts. But why doing a pH comparison when the pH-meter shows 8.6 measuring plain water?

1 gram of soap into 99g water seems like a crazy ratio; wouldn't you be getting a massive buffer of flat 7ph due to the water? I'm ignorant and trying to accurately pH my soap. Enlighten me

Concerning dove soap is not about pH but they use a highly comedogenic moisturizer that make acne seriously worse I have a oily skin and when I use it I got many pores blocked

Hi. If you want absolute ph7 use deionised water rather than distilled The water breaks down to h+ and oh- ions which are acidic and basic. There may even be a home machine that can deionise the water. I’m going to try making soup this weekend. Thank you ✌️

That’s so fun! That’s next level soap experimentation!
@mariak8480
@mariak8480 3 года назад
That is not true. Deionised water is purified water without ions like e.g. Na+ or Cl- ions. It definitely does not break down the water(H2O) into H+ and O-.
@markc7955
@markc7955 3 года назад
@@mariak8480 I was saying it recombins the hydroxyl anion and Hydride ion into water making it closer to ph7 It also pulls other ions though many are removed in the distillation process.
@mariak8480
@mariak8480 3 года назад
@@markc7955 okay, what do you mean by "it recombines the hydroxyl anion and hydride ion into water" then? If you mean that distilled or deionised water does this in soap then I have to disagree again. In the soap distilled water does not contribute to "recombination" of H and HO.
@mariak8480
@mariak8480 3 года назад
@Mark C The reason is that there is no separation of H2O into H+ and OH- happening. Let's talk about the saponification of olive oil. What's happening is you dissolve NaOH into distilled/deionised water and then you have Na+ and OH- in a watery solution (aq). Olive oil consists of glyceril trioleate. Each of the OH- attach to the glycerol backbone of the olive oil, making glycerol (glycerin). Each of the Na+ attach to the fatty acid chains of the olive oil building sodium oleate (=soap). The water from the beginning stays in the soap untouched in H2O form unless you expose your soap to air. In that case it evaporates (causing soap to harden)

i hope your eye is ok and i wanted to know how to deal with lye in the eye when it happens ?
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 3 года назад
Hi! The eye is fine, and I appreciate the concern! ❤️ Goggles are important for precisely that reason! When you experience a lye irritation of any sort, always flush the area with running water for a few minutes. In this case, I had an eye rinse handy so I squirted it in until it stopped hurting and followed up with a cold compress after filming. 😁
@moara4144
@moara4144 3 года назад
As a lab scientist, if you get a strong base like lye in your eye, you should flush contininuously with running water for 15 minutes, and then go to the emerg room, so they can make sure you don't permanently damage your vision.

I don't understand "yoni" bars... You don't stick the soap up there (at least I hope you aren't doing that). Hypes make no sense sometimes.
@MultiHurtem
@MultiHurtem 3 года назад
Some soaps are better than others. You can definitely create a bar that is better for the female parts than others. Hence a yoni bar. I.E. since I was a teen I notice Irish spring would give me a weird feel and smell when the soap touches me there that I don’t get with more sensitive soap with less additives and fragrances etc.
@codybrookehanson2346
@codybrookehanson2346 3 года назад
@@MultiHurtem ok, fair point. I generally just can't use cheap soaps as they dry out my skin and I suppose a few may have been irritating in that area. I wouldn't get a bar just for my lady bits though, I've already got baby soap and hair soaps and body soap taking up space in my shower.
@MrsSoapAndClay

Anecdotal evidence and body chemistry are two different things. Our acid mantle can be impacted by a number of things, from genetics and diet to overgrowth of yeast or even that time of the month. Generally speaking, if a bar of actual soap irritates the nether regions, it has less to do with the ph of the soap and more to do with the ph of the skin, which soap can’t actually be balanced for and still stay in solution. I think this is why so many people recommend just using water on the nether regions.
