In this episode, we unbox and test out the hyperkin storage stands for retro video game cartridges
One of the things about collecting retro video games is the fact that they take up a lot of space. Even if you are not collecting complete inbox, loose cartridges need to be stored some way. I have to admit, cartridge stands were one of the first things that I started to print when I got my 3D printer. But not everybody has access to something like that, which is why it is great that hyperkin has stepped up with storage cases for the original Nintendo entertainment system, the Super Nintendo entertainment System, the N64, and game boy, Game Boy color, and Game Boy advance.
One of the great things about these cartridge holders is the fact that two of them come in a box with all four sets. That really allows you to take a bite out of figuring out how you are going to store and display your cartridges. The Nintendo and Super Nintendo stands can actually be stacked on top of each other, but the N64 and Game Boy ones cannot. I am sure this is due to the rounded shape on the N64 carts, and the fact that cartridges are different heights between the game boy, Game Boy color, and Game Boy advance
All of the stands seem to be molded in a similar smoke plastic material. They are rigid and feel fairly durable. On the NES side of things, the stand comes up high enough on the cartridge itself to actually support The wider portion versus just where the 72 pin connector comes out of the cartridge. This should prevent your cartridges from tipping and falling over. The rest of the holders all fit firmly around the base of the cartridges. One thing of note, super famicom cartridges will fit in the Super Nintendo holder, but it's not a terrific fit. Also, the N64 trays can hold us, pal, or Japanese cartridges without any issue.
Why it RoX:
- convenient way to store and display your cartridges
- available for many Nintendo systems
- smoke color looks pretty awesome
- NES and Super NES holders are stackable
- N64 holder compatible with us and import games
- Game Boy holder compatible with game boy, Game Boy advance, and Game Boy Color
What could be improved:
- N64 and Game Boy stands are not stackable
- more color options would be great
- hard to see labels on N64 and Game Boy
- they are muscling in on my 3D printer turf!
Should you buy them?
These are actually really simple but really well put together. I like the stackable nature on the NES and Super NES side of things, but having some sort of keyhole to Walmart these would be really awesome. I don't know why they don't advertise the Game Boy advance cartridges as being compatible, I think it's kind of weird. Finally, reading the labels on the Game Boy and N64 games can be a bit of a challenge due to the lack of end labels on these cartridges. These are all minor nitpicks, however, as these are actually very nice. If you are looking for a good way to store and display your retro cartridges give these a look.
You can also check out my 3D printer store too, just saying.

I think these are fine as a storage option, but I personally find something staggered in a stair-like unit similar to what you 3D printed more interesting because it doubles as not only storage but also display.

Definitely liking the Gameboy stands. That would be way better than my current situation, which is just in a drawer. Also like the NES stands, which might save some room on my shelf, but would make it a little tricker to just grab the cart I want.

Kinda, I had 3D printed a similar one, this is nice for being stackable too.

These seem pretty nice--the SNES ones I was really interested in, especially for how they fit SF carts since I could see myself utilizing something like these for those as a space saver since I'm not as likely to draw from those versus the SNES games. The point of seeing/not seeing labels is exactly my thought process, BUT, I get the design here to make them stackable. For simple storage though, I like these. I DO think any handheld offering should be stackable maybe before a console setup; it makes more sense in my mind at least to have smaller profile games be able to stack on display over carts that can otherwise sit on a shelf just fine.

Storage bins like these, but intended for audio cassette cases, are a perfect fit for loose Famicom carts. I found two matching 30 slot bins at a CD store a while ago for maybe $3 each, and they work great!

Yeah, I've heard cassette cases work perfectly for Genesis games too

Would it be possible to create a unit like this that can also fit in a media shelf? In my game room I stack carts on top of one another so I'm always having to lift and move carts but if there was a way I could still stack carts but have them stay in place without moving anything that would be convenient.

3D printing is the solution there, I can definitely produce something.

The GB/GBA one is super interesting. There is no good way to display them at all. I may have to get that one.

An acrylic nail polish holder tiered stand is the usual go-to for a lot of collectors. Just make sure you check reviews if ordering on amazon as some listings send variants under the same listing and they might not match if ordering multiples.

This is definitely a good option for storage. All my 64 games are loose but I would like dust covers for them instead of this one. Awesome video, Gary!

I would have liked to see how well the Gameboy cartridge holder would handle the Retro85 switch cartridges. I need a tray like these for the mini NES cartridges.

Maybe a dumb question, but if I were to put this on its side to put on a shelf with the labels facing out, would the cartridges stay in place or slide out?

$25? way to expensive for a flimsy plastic holder, definitely at that price, not made for people with a decent collection of games, you can still buy a book shelf or a cd/dvd/blueray shelf for a little bit more, and store your whole collection. Hard pass.

I charge more than $25 for my 3D printed tiered stands all day long. You got to pay for the design time, the molds, the materials, the labor....
