Availability of food in India today is possible due to evolution of technology used in agriculture. In this talk, Dr. Gulati explains how India adopted new technologies in the past and what is going to happen in the future.
Ashok Gulati is currently Infosys Chair Professor for Agriculture at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), which he joined in March, 2014. During March 2011-February 2014, he was Chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), a body responsible for recommending Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) of 23 important agri-commodities to Government of India. Prior to this, Dr Gulati was Director at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) for more than 10 years (Jan 2001-Feb 2011). Before joining IFPRI, he also served as NABARD Chair Professor at the Institute of Economic Growth, and Chief Economist at the National Council of Applied Economics Research in India. He has also been a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

It is bcz of food security system in India which forces a farmer to sell his crop at price not of his choice but of govt's or middlemen choice

In Name of food security govt can not kill food grower if food price to be reduced there is need to reduce salary of employees. Govt. is creating imbalance of income. Know slowly india is going to depend on other countries for food reason is only govt. imbalance of income due to which youth avoiding agriculture be aware india on wrong track. Money can not fill hunger. Land is not factory it only produces to its strength it's human who need balance. Urgent need is to reduce salary of employees to that of agriculturists or either increase income of agriculturists to that of employees. For it requires a decision making prime minister. The man who loves concept of india can do this.

I am new to the farming field and reading through many concepts of it. Getting confused as to which way of farming is good for India. Heard many experts in the field both in India and abroad starting from Subhash Parlekar to Dr. Vandana Shiva. the opinion of one person does not match with other. Would like to point out here, Dr. Gulati praised the BT cotton introduction as a disrupting technology in India, but Dr. Vandana will have different perspective to it. I heard that Doctors differ but now coming to know that even farmers also differ. Good that some debating is happening and soon a consensus will be arrived at.

Subhash Palekar and Akash Chauraaiya models in combination are the best. Attend seminars and training session of each , most of your doubts will be clear. Make most use of your biodiversity and agriwaste ( for Mulching and conversion to biofertiliser using Waste deconposer) or energy generation ( Biogas, power)
@somyadeepguharoy8552

Use indegeneos seeds, enrich your soil with Organic Carbon, P, K, N and micronutrients, Humus content for which enhancing growth of microorganisms and earthworms are important.
@somyadeepguharoy8552
@somyadeepguharoy8552 2 года назад
Make use of Pure desi breed of cows and goats for C, N, P, K, microorganisms & growth of Earthworm. Ghanjeevamrit & Gaukripaaamrit are the best along with Biogas slurry. With mulching, growth of weeds and disease prone condition of crops will be minimised , evaporation and water consumption will be minimised and earthworms can tilt soil making it soft, porous and rich in Humus content.

When we are being the largest exporter of rice, then why the poverty in India exists. When we being one of the largest producer of milk why 40 percent of milk in the market is synthetic milk. Instead of standing in a queue for milk we stand in a queue for admission in hospitals
@saileshbabut9696

you are right, instead of feeding the people in our country most of rice is exported in greed of GDP

Vamshi krishna of export is done go get good rates for farmers how come farmers are still committing suicide. Our water table is getting depleted. Inspite of all the development in BT cotton but it has not stopped cotton disease and most farmers committing suicide are cotton farmers.

The speaker seems to be promoting the views of the government. Native breeds of seeds are resistant to local climate swings and diseases.

Sir for all your knowledgeand numbers why don't put out number about how the ecology is getting ruined and how many people are getting cancer due to these foods. When will the govt. wake up to the fact that more and more farmers are leaving agriculture because they themselves are starving. If all that you say was so good why are 80% of the farmers in the BPL category. Somewhere do the line the system has not only failed the farmers but all its citizens too.
@aprasath1

Why farmers are becoming poorer? because we not doing organic farming. Farmers are made dependent more and more and they need to buy everything from fertilizers to buying foods for cows .Where in earlier they could live on their own with natural(organic) farming
@naveenkumarpatle1600
@naveenkumarpatle1600 5 лет назад
Why farmers are becoming poorer? Because cost of living is increasing but price of farm produce are not increased in line with other job. Farmers also need same income to fullfill his home requirements as like other jobs. So there are large scale agitation is going on across India to increase farm produce prices.

The main problem lies is in the supply chain process , food gets eroded at many place and no body took that to the market.
@lilycohen2306

And same problem is going to solved by the BlockGrain , Australian firm try to find all the possible solution to make farmers happy .
@suneetsalvi1200
@suneetsalvi1200 5 лет назад
Main problem is poor rates for produce and lack of storage facilities. Today more and more farmers are leaving farming as it is unviable, which means the system has failed and there is an Agrian crisis at least in India

To all the people criticising the speaker : I hope you had a bellyful or breakfast today morning, coz if you hadn’t you couldn’t talk of philosophy and sustainability. Yes, lot more must be done for farmers and environment today but that can’t discredit what has been achieved. And for ideas on farmer welfare and sustainability watch other lectures by same narrator.

After listening to this talk it seems that the policy makers, researchers and economists of India are way off track. This will not help our country and it's citizens and will not save our soils from further degradation. In the name of food security much harm is already done. Educated people at these designation must have a broader vision.
