I don't understand how to avoid power struggles while also having structure in the home. My son only acts out when I am trying to enforce the rules or a set limit. It feels like the only way to avoid the outbursts is to let him get away with whatever he wants...i.e. staying up all night watching tv, or not doing homework, etc.

My 11 year old DMDD son has always showed his behaviors at school and home. School is the worst right now. The place he doesn't show is his dad's. He's terrified of him and getting into trouble with him, so he masks there. The first couple of days after a dad weekend tend to be rough.

Praying that the supportive services are able to help manage and reduce the outburst. You are your sons advocate and co-pilot as he navigates his journey.

What do you do when you have younger kids in the home with a child like this? Where the impaired child isn’t receiving the same consequences that the other ones are because we know their behaviors aren’t controlled and the other children start learning and thinking these behaviors are ok? Also with other children in the home, how do you keep them safe from these outbursts and even a parent or parents as they get older?

My son is 8. He's been diagnosed with dmdd last year. He is horrendous everywhere including school. He's punched and head butted the principal multiple times, given bloody noses to the social worker at school. He was kicked out of public school and put into an emotionally impaired school where he continues his horrible behaviors. Weve tried so many different meds over the last couple years, nothing is working!! Help!

Oh, I’m so sorry. My son has and had his own struggles with DMDD. I feel you!

Thank you for this insight. It took months to get psychiatrists to even diagnose my son, and no discussion about managing DMDD. This is great food for thought.

My child was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 3. I never felt like it was correct. Now she is 18 and I was told it was ODD, or Bi-Polar disorder. Listening to you I think it's a mood disorder. She's been in trouble and in a bad mood her entire life and now she an adult. Now what?!

Thank you for this podcast. I have come back to teaching after almost 20 years. I am now teaching social skills to autistic middle schoolers and this is very informative and helpful.

Love the comment distinction: ADHD, tough day. ODD and CD is NOT something to brush off. It’s unsettling.

Is there a good assessment for DMDD that parents can fill out and take to our children’s mental health providers?

What are your thoughts regarding diagnosis of DMDD when the child has every symptom with exception of overt symptoms while in the classroom. Can a child with DMDD manage their symptoms for ther most part then unload when they get home?
