Wonderful 8mm colour cine film of the market town of Diss in Norfolk from the late 1940s. This was filmed by my grandfather and features his original home-made captions!
The first section is entitled "Diss & it's picturesque surroundings" and features footage shot at various locations throughout the town - Mere Street, Market Hill, The Dolphin House and Church, Mount Street, Fair Green and includes some great film of a bustling market day.
"Mere Reflections" has various shots of the town across the Mere from various points around its perimeter.
"Shopping Week July 1949" is footage of that years carnival - was it known as shopping week back then? Great footage of the carnival queen and her assistants with the local dignitaries, the carnival float processions through Mere Street, the watching crowds and then children's fancy dress competition. Some of this was filmed at the Saracens Head Bowls Club - now a car park!
The final part of the film includes footage of the Lowes, Stuston Common and some fabulous shots of "Scole Inn and its Old World Gardens" .... the gardens are also now a car park!
This film is part of a collection of cine footage of Norfolk, shot by my grandfather Stanley Arthur Youngs between the 1930s and 1950s. Born and bred in South Norfolk and a baker by trade, my grandfather was also a keen amateur cine photographer with a passion for creating films of rural Norfolk life which he delighted in showing to people in a makeshift cinema in the bakehouse.

Great film. Wiggy Edwards was my grandfather too, who I never met as he died before I was born.

How lovely - thank you for the additional info. This is exactly the reason why I wanted to get my grandfather's films out there! :- )

The man called Wiggy pushing the broom was my grandad who died before i was born, lovely to see him on film, my parents would have been about sixteen in 1947 and can remember skating on the mere, it could even be them on this film.

Wiggy Edwards was the father of my best friend Barry when I lived at Diss during WW2. Barry and I were reunited a few years back after losing touch with each other for over 60 years. Sadly he died a couple of years ago. I believe Wiggy had 14 children!!!

This is fabulous to see, really how little so many of our wonderful buildings and town have changed in 75 years - except for the stupid one way system!!! I would be interested to know how you got your cine film transferred to digital. I had 40 or so reels of my father's cone transferred and was very disappointed with results. Any advice gratefully received.

Hi Carol. Glad that you enjoyed the film. It is amazing how little had changed really over the years. This batch of film was transferred for me by a company in Norwich who do a lot of work for TV companies. The results were amazing, but they were pretty expensive. I've been using a company at Loddon called Video Impact for more recent transfers. The results have been very good and their prices are extremely good compared to most. This was one of their transfers for me: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5BTb64dkAlM.html A Google search will bring you the contact details. If you decide to give them a try, please do mention that Carol from Broadland Memories recommended them.
