I tore my distal bicep tendon moving a large step ladder at work. It started to fall to one side and I tried to arrest its fall with my left hand. Felt it go like bubble wrap being popped. I went to the ER and the on-duty doctor reckoned it was just a muscle tear, so I didn't do anything about it. But it just didn't feel right so I went and got an ultrasound after 2 and half months had passed, and that's when I learned it was a total rupture. The ortho surgeon I got said he couldn't guarantee he'd be able to re-attach it until he opened me up, but in the end he was able to. He had to dig it out from all the scar tissue so I have a longitudinal 13 inch scar running down the inside of my arm. I was in a sling for a month after the op and then did physio for 2 more months after that. I was slowly able to get full extension, which is awesome, but the muscle is tiny and weak by comparison.I also have nerve damage that gives me weird tingling on the back of my hand, but that should slowly disappear. I try to do exercises when I can, but having small kids it's tough to find the time. I'll try to be more diligent going forward. I'm not a meathead, so I'm in no rush to get to the gym to bust out reps, but I also don't want this to affect my lifestyle in the future. Anyway, just thought I'd share my story.
Marcello Fabretti I got one of these. Never got fixed though. Still have full use of my arm due to other muscles, but it’s weaker, so I’ve been careful with it. Pain would spike up randomly if I moved my arm to fast ask well. Pain only just stopped recently.
Same thing happened to me, trying to catch a falling ladder.. 😔 took them a month til I had the surgery. Now I’m 2 months post op. Luckily I’m getting all my motion back now, it’s just a bit stiff on extension/flexion but didn’t suffer any nerve damage etc. I still have 2 more months until I’m back to regular duty..
Mine almost got untreated, ER also thought my injury was just a muscle tear but because the tearing sound really shocked me I went to the doctor again the next day, after 2 weeks of ultrasound and MRI scans I finally got my tendon repaired few days ago
I had this procedure 18 months ago. The recovery is slow but about a year later I was back to full strength and now I'm bench pressing more than before. No need to rush the recovery even though I think most guys get anxious to get back to using the arm again. Let it heal properly.
Brother I hope you are fine. Can you tell me how you started back on the gym ? Could you outline it please since I have an injury (not tear) but an injury on my elbow and I'm anxious. I already lost so much strength just my taking 2 weeks off and gained weight too. How was your recovery ?
Recovering from 90% rupture repair, @ 53 years old. Six weeks in a cast, followed by six weeks in an Orthopedic brace, and now 120 days of no lifting. I’m a Firefighter, hoping to make a full recovery.
I have had this done in both arms 10 years apart. From a female perspective, hardest surgery mentally. For a woman there is so much more that I do as far as self care goes that folks don't think about. From putting on a bra to hair and makeup, its doable but exhausting at the same time. I am now ambidextrous, lol. My last surgery was June 20, 2023, so, still recuperating.
I had this exact surgery in July of 21.. after tearing it on June 21. The surgery went well and took me about 6 months to get back to 75% use in that arm. The scariest was the numbness running up the inside of my arm, which disappeared totally about 8 months out. Atrophy was bad and noticable. Dr. Suggested to wait for any excercise to build it back up to 1 year. I did PT from August until October 21. Keeps you moving it little by little carefully but consistently. I'd say PT is super important to getting your arm back to normal. It's a physical injury but also a mental one as most people remember the traumatic experience of heat and bubble wrap popping. From then on out mentally, you'll always go out of your way to protect it. It's been about 16 months from the repair.. it's strong and feels fine. I probably protect it a bit unconsciously, but better safe than sorry. If you're just starting this journey, you'll be fine as long as you LISTEN to your PT and surgeon. I remember reading as much online as I could as I sat there handicapped with my ROM brace for 3 months. Sooner before later, you'll be glad you did the repair, and it'll be behind you with a great scar to show everyone.
Just had this surgery. This is a really good animation that explains the entire procedure. I've read that this surgery makes the entire bicep much stronger. I can see why.
How did you deal with it? How long does it takes for recovery? Also physical therapy?? Please respond. Both my biceps are gone from working out and lifting over my weight limit, trying to push myself but over did it.
@@CloroxBleach-we3gv not good.. I ignore it.. so I have no strength in my arms. Can't lift anything 5 pounds or more. It's been so long already, maybe, 7 years now.. but now I think I'm going to get over my fears and get surgery.. it hurts time to time so I gotta rest and massage it and not do much physical activities.
@@CloroxBleach-we3gv couldn't they recut it and drill them back together in the bones? Like this video.. the problem is. Idk if its from the top (shoulders) or the bottom (forearm) area that ripped. Or even worst the bicep itself..
Good animation.Had a similar surgery in December 2012 and must say it was a long road. Worse than breaking bone... 6 weeks cast, 10 weeks of therapy. 9 months later I feel 95%, but I think the surgery was right decision
I had this surgery done 13 weeks ago. I tore mine trying to catch a flooring roll that was falling at my storage unit. I do Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting. I am on the road to a full recovery and have playlists on my channel with updates and the rehab I did for squat, bench, deadlift, snatch, and clean and jerk.
5 days Post surgery on this and very interesting procedure. Love reading all the individual experiences too, which reinforces my original thoughts of recovery times. I was comparing to a Rotator Cuff and Scapular tendon repair I did a few years back and felt the healing process must be similar where full thickness tendon repair is done and you guys have helped considerably. Many thanks and I am booked for first physio assessment and treatment and Surgeon Post op check in 7 days time. Unfortunately this incurs a 6 hour drive from our small rural town and hoping balance of physio will be able to be established closer to home although I have yet to find out how often I will need to attend the PT's rooms. Thanks everyone for your sharing - it really does help.
@@maylenortega9102 First surgery failed after 6 weeks and had to have it done over again. Another 8 weeks of rehab but never got back to pre injury status.
Had this exact thing done-(Endobutton-1 incision method)-had a full tendon avulsion-totally "Popeyed" my right arm-don't sweat it if you are needing this done-a few nights after surgery a little hard to sleep but didn't take long I was back to normal-outpatient surgery(In and out same day-piece of cake)-paid $7000.00 cash(surgeon only charged about $1,000 of total)-the rest was outpatient clinic/anesthesiologist/endobutton kit etc.),this was done in August 2013-Surgeon said I was under the knife a little more than an hour-the anxiety of thinking about it is far worse than the surgery itself-never been sick much or ever had surgery before so I was a big fraidy cat-I'm 58 years old - it was no big deal.
I just had this done on Halloween Day this year, 2014. The recovery is longer than expected, but the surgery was easy, out-patient. It is really amazing how little you actually use your bicep. I was benching 275 like no big deal 2 days before surgery. My surgeon tells me he has done lots of these and I can expect full recovery after about 6 months. I went almost 3 weeks with no bicep on one side and noticed only trouble curling. Other than that, I could do almost anything. At 54 yrs old that is pretty good.
Steven Hubbard when u bench, youre not using much bicep. That explains why u shouldn’t lose strength in that exercise. The reason why you had trouble curling is because biceps brachii is the prime mover in that exercise so you will def feel a difference if it’s tore. As far as other things, the body is designed with built in redundancies. We have what we call synergists. They are muscles that help other muscles carry out the job. So for instance if you tear your biceps, all your other elbow flexors are going to pick up the slack. Specifically any muscles that cross the elbow anteriorly will help flex the elbow like biceps did when it was attached. I tore mine and had this exact surgery back in 2011. I was back to work 6 months. I’m also a licensed massage therapist and I see tears and ruptures all the time. Depending on what u do for a living and how good of a patient u are, physical recovery for a torn with repaired muscle is about 3-4 months for a desk job and 6-9 for a physical job. Once you get back to a physical job you then have to gain your confidence back which took me a few months.
Bench Press is predominately tricep extension, shoulder internal rotation and chest flexion. It's a limited movement out, there are numerous ones you use your bicep during, so no wonder.
+eric thompson It doesn't look like it would be able to hold 200 kilos or more. How did it work out for you? Did it snap while mixed grip dl? If so, do you still do mixed?
I Ruptured my Bicep on February 14,2016. I was in alot of pain. Had Surgery February 18,2016. Dr drilled a hole in my bone re attached my Bicep and Secured it with a Titanium Screw. Was in a cast for 2wks. Then cast was removed and stitches taken out. Then I was put in another cast for 4wks. I just had it taken off. I'm having to go to Physical Therapy next wk.
My boyfriend and I are sitting in the waiting room rn. He's about to go in and have his distal bicep tendon repaired. Not sure if they'll use this method tho
I binged like 10 videos of this operation, seems like they always do this or a slight variation of this. Hopes your bf has gotten better as 6 months should have been long enough for him to go back to normal
I had this Surgery three weeks ago. The biggest problem I have is the Nerve damage that was done doing the surgery. I explained this to surgeon that Repaired my tear . He said you probably suffered some bruising doing-the procedure. The nerve pain damage is in my wrist all the way through my thumb. It feels like ice water and electric shock running through your hand. It’s extremely painful if you have not suffer with the nerve damage consider yourself extremely lucky. My nerve damage so severe it’s causing my hand Bruising-and to lose extreme amount of moisture. I waited 3 months before I had the surgery..Thank you guys for sharing
I received distal bicep surgery 1.5 weeks ago. I know a button was used, but I don't know if there was a tension slide (screw?) as well. I have the common incision on the anterior side of the forearm, but I also have an arthroscopic puncture on the posterior side of the forearm. I wonder if the surgeon removed the button through the posterior puncture after the tendon was affixed with the bone screw? I guess I will find out when I see him on Monday.
I did something to my bicep forearm tendon. I tried to push a heavy object on the floor with straight arms and I felt kinda like a rope being stretched inside my arm. Pain showed up immediately but I was able to lift and curl my forearm but most painful was turning the forearm. Doctor at ER said that I didnt tear anything but so I left it untreated. After about six months my bicep as flexed looks a little elevated comparing to the other side so I went to the other doc and he said that I might have torn a one head of the bicep tendon but it was healed to the other side or some stuff like that. I can lift almost anything as now with no weight limit but my bicep doesnt look correct and also I dont feel it 100% strength comparing to the right one. Does Anybody know if there is a chance to still fix it or it is too late? Thank you.
Tore mine lifting motorcycle onto a stand. Picked up bike by swingarm, lifted onto the stand but the shifter caught the edge, so I lowered it back down a few inches and tried to heave it back up higher than before - then heard and felt the tearing like bubble wrap. This was after a long day of riding my race bike in singletrack trails in the snow, freezing cold and battered from about 10 crashes. It hurt like hell, I dropped the bike on the floor. With only my left hand it took me and the girlfriend several tries to get the bike back up to standing so I could just put it on the kickstand. Long story short it took a month to get into surgery for this repair. I'm at day 18 after surgery now. There's been some extremely painful sleepless nights where I laid in bed feeling like someone was dragging a cheese grader over my elbow from the inside. The only thing that helps for me is a handful of Percocets, but they won't prescribe many of them since they're an opiate and I ran out. I can come about 30° from straightening my arm. Supination is also about 30° away from normal. I am a motocross/enduro racer when I'm not at work, hoping to get back on the bike soon. Cheers.
@Richard - hope this helps: 1. What are the reason for using that plug? To help secure the tendon along with the button 2. What is the plug made of? To help secure the tendon along with the button 3. and doesn't it cause add pressure on the tendon or bone? The screw sits next to tendon and gradually dissolves over time 4. Are there higher risks of infections? No 5. Does it affect bone healing, and what happens to that plug over time? Bone healing replaces the screw
I ruptured my biceps tendon last week, and I will be doing the surgery on Tuesday, and I'm scared AF. I have never done surgery in my life. and this will be my first surgery for being 33 years old. I hope the recovery goes smooth even though Reading some comments scared me with post surgery complications.
@@adminadmin9997 the incision is a little larger than the surgeon expected, but otherwise the procedure was a complete success. I have full range of motion with my arm and the physical therapy is getting the strength building back. I figure in another six weeks to two months I'll be back to full strength like nothing happened.
I noticed over the years with all the bicep injuries I've had that my biceps are shorter now. They don't connect all the way to the elbow anymore like they used to. There's an inch and a half gap or so. I wonder if I have some kind of a partial tear?
That was the same for me, the wrist pain lasted for a few months but did eventually go away. If only the button would have stayed in place and not slipped back through the hole and I wouldn't have to get this surgery re-done.
Stems cells have the capability to differentiate into a variety of different cell types. So i believe they could work, but probably there is a reason why they dont use them yet.
question i just had my surgery a week ago. my arm can not stretch completely out its bent !I'm guessing because it's not completely healed yet! is this the same process for everybody else ?
I had this procedure and it's a long recovery about 7 months before I could lift any thing but made a full recovery and got back training and was deadlifting 260 kg Max weighing 105 kg
I am about 13 weeks post op completed all pt and got sent home with some home work outs, i can do almost all things with no issues, but curling 10-15 lb dumbbells i get a pain in my forearm, last time i spoke with my pt they were not overly worried about it, and said it would go away over time has anyone else had Any issues with pain im assuming where the tendon was attached? I am not a big working out person but am a naturally pretty strong person, so to not be able to curl a 15 lb dumbbell is frustrating and worrysome.
Siting on my couch in pain 2 days post I’ll complete distal rupture, pain was that bad after surgery I was in tears they gave me fetanyl and the pain was still so bad, mainly from the actual bone. Worried about the recovery as I am a fit person and love the gym… I will be injecting a peptide Calle bpc 157 after week 1 for 4 weeks, very good studies on it.
I tore my bicep a week ago, but I have full ROM and only hurts when I do fast strong movements. I wonder if Ishould go for surgery or leave it as it since it don’t bother me to much
Yes you should. You won't have strength. What helps you do ROM is your pronation and supination muscles but the are small and weak. If you lift something heavy you can injure them too.
@@mathieufredette3157 I did get surgery I’m 7 weeks post op and I feel good just a little sore at the end of the day and my mobility is coming back m. Can’t wait to go back to the gym!
My main concern was with deadlifts. I am a pretty heavy deadlifter and am more scared of that than anything else. I am 7 weeks post surgery and the surgeon said he is confident that over time I will deadlift 665+lbs in the future like I used to. He said because the injury happens when the arm is hyper extended and a great amount of force is applied. Which is what happened to me. I got injured at work. I was pushing a pallet across the floor with a layer of cases on it with an underhand grip and it just snapped and moved up in my arm. He said the weight pulling straight down wont reinjure it, as long as you use proper form.
I'm 1 week out and palm of hand, index, ring middle finger and thumb are numb. Feels like hand is asleep. Except no matter what I do that sensation is there. I hope this goes away.
The first tear was a work accident, sudden hyperextenstion at elbow setting a 30000lb bulk fuel tank with a crane. Second tear was from a roll over vehicle accident. I had grabbed the bottom of the steering wheel like a curl to keep my butt in the seat as the car rolled. While neither were exercise related, they probably would not have torn if I wasn't into bodybuilding!!!
dmann343 Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry to hear that it happened to both arms. It is my fear that it will also happen to my other arm also because of wear and tear of the tendon from years of lifting weights. I am 6 weeks post surgery. Mine actually occurred performing a classic chest exercise if you can believe it. I suppose I was standing to far forward when grasping the handle for standing cable flies. My arm was also in a hyper-extended at the time. What is amazing is how quickly my arm atrophied after nearly 2 months of non-use. I'm sure size and strength will eventually return though.
Yes. I am in Canada and was lucky to have had both surgeries within 24 hours of the tears. My injured arm each time shrunk 3-4 inches over 6 months. With me I totally quit the gym during healing. Kept well hydrated, slept 8 hours a night, no caffeine and very little salt. No foods high in preservatives only simple forms of protein and small portioned complete carb meals many times during the day even right before bed!! When I was resting the arm over the months I literally used it for nothing, barely even flexed it. But when I returned to the gym and started slow, the power and size quickly returned. I've heard of people not getting surgery right away and the healing and physio were longer because more of the muscle atrophies and they have to cut it off. I've seen dudes ripping it out at the gym with a cast on but I think that's probably the worst thing you could do. You don't want it to heal faster, you want it to heal proper! It'll be a stronger fix in the long run. Look at me, in the roll over the previously repaired arm was under equal force as the other side and it was fine!
Hello I will write about my experience tendon ruptured first at my right hand at 22/09/2015 and at my left hand at 11/04/2016 .Now I am waiting to recover at left hand I have 5 months for full recovery .I think it was bad luck and never happen to anyone .My right hand now is 8 months from surgery and I think is strong again and I hope for my left hand .
What are the reason for using that plug? What is the plug made of? and doesn't it cause add pressure on the tendon or bone? Are there higher risks of infections? Does it affect bone healing, and what happens to that plug over time?
I'm getting this done possibly next week. I am a bit scared about the cutting of the aponeurosis as well as the idea of the corkscrew. Is the corkscrew piece made of absorbable material?
There is a physio option, I was presented with, but it meant at the very best your arm will get to 80% capacity and the pronation/supination movement in your hand will peak at 50% strength. I chose surgery and am on day 28 of recovery.
elitestar maybe our bodies grow it back stronger than it was before. Like when you lift weights and cause the muscle fibres to tear and your body builds them back stronger. Maybe im wrong
At first, yes. With time and therapy....it stretches out though and over even more time it gains strength back. People don't realize until they've been injured, some injuries take years to get back to 100% and many times you never get 100%. Take it from a guy with every limb in his body having had surgery! lol tendons, bones, steel plates and screws from when I got shot twice. Leg nearly cut in half, shattered hand, and now my left distal biceps tendon! Had surgery a few days ago.
Sounds like you've had a tough run my man, I'm about 16 weeks after this surgery, I'm back at the gym most of my lifts i don't feel the bicep, I'm staying away for chin ups for a long while, my bicep and fore arm still hurt if i tey to lift decent weight so I'm taking isolated bicep workouts pretty easy
I'm at 13 weeks post op. Been doing bicep curls at PT. Getting a clicking noise and sensation at the tendon while performing curls. Has anyone else had this occurr.
Assim, penso eu.
I think i may need this when i was 9 i pulled my arm batting and when i flex that side it hurts and looks weird... i am 15 ._. is this normal for my age
Its seems pretty robust, 4 weeks outa surgery i had a few.deinks and got involved in a scuffle at a pub, skmw bikie qas.picking on my little brother i elbowed him in the face after he punched me then followed jim to.the geound full mounywd him and unleashed 20 gnp jooks to his head, the nwxt day i thought i would have reruptured it but it was fine, so i guess its a strong bind.
I don't know if strength of the bicep is reduced but, the size definitely does! I've seen bodybuilders tear their bicep and their bicep never looked the same
It's been a month and I recovered 90% strength I would say. I recovered faster than the usual. You are not supposed to lift heavy before 6 months usually but I started right away and I am fine.
I Ruptured my Bicep. Had Surgery. Surgery went well. Had a cast for 2 wks. Then cast was removed and stitches were taken out. I was put in another cast for 4 wks. Just got cast off and having to to Physical Therapy.
This does not look like fun. I had a likely tear on Saturday, and an MRI today to see the extent of the damage. Hopefully it will be fixable, and hopefully healing times have improved.
