How do you solve those crazy distance word problems? It's distance = rate times time, but what do you do when there are upstream/downstream currents or upwind/downwind airflows in the mix?
I'll take you through this type of distance problem and show you everything you need to know to solve it. For more examples of distance problems (like two cars leave different cities heading toward each other, two cars leave the same city at different times, etc.) then please go to part 1.

Aww please don’t sell yourself short! Practice is everything, and this particular problem is a doozy 😵‍💫. An approach that may help with tough problems or concepts is "they do, we do, I do." Basically, you watch the instructional video all the way through ("they do"). Then you go back to the beginning and pause before each step and see if you can do it on your own. After you attempt it, you watch that part of the video and make any necessary corrections ("we do"). Finally, you step away from the video and try it completely on your own ("I do"). I know it seems very repetitive, but that repetition and hands-on work can help tough concepts stick. All the best! Alyssa

I liked that this was a more difficult problem. I didn't figure it out on my own before you showed how to do it, but that's OK - I learned something about how to set things up to eliminate a variable.

6:20 is a bit confusing. B = boat’s speed, not boat’s speed in still water. Did you mean that the boat’s speed in still water = boat’s speed? If so, that makes sense as the boat’s pure speed is done through still water. It was confusing that 3C = B but I think I get it now. It was a bit vague

Aw I'm sorry to hear that. Will the quiz include currents and wind speeds like this one? It covers the more "standard" distance/rate/time problems that usually show up.

It depends on your book/course. I often see introductory distance rate time problems in Algebra 1 and ones involving current and airflow in Algebra 2, but it isn’t always that way.
