There are different methods for the separation of different kinds of mixtures. In this lesson, we will learn how a mixture of 2 miscible liquids can be separated.
Distillation is the process of separating miscible components of a mixture that do not decompose upon the boiling band have sufficient difference in their boiling points.

I really don't get the 'water in' and 'water out' part of the condensing tube. Can someone help? I think I can see now that the cool water doesn't actually mix with the condensing water, it just keeps the tube cool from the outside. And it goes up through a really thin tube? But what really makes it go up though why wouldn't it just stay there? And how does hot water leave? Is it steam that leaves or what? I'm so confused and if anyone could help that would be great thanks.

The condensing tube is a tube within a tube, as shown. The outer tube is for the cool water which is a continuous flow from the faucet, therefore constantly moving through to keep the inner tube cool. Typically it goes in the bottom hose and out the top hose. The inner tube is connected to the flask so that any vapor boiled off in the flask will travel into the inner tube, be condensed by the colder water around it, and then drip into the beaker.

I think cold water is to cool the vapour of acetone so it will become liquid acetone in the beaker

Please change the heading to Fractional Distillation and Facts on Distillation. DISTILLATION is actually a process where in which a liquid is separated from its initial solution. WHAT YOU SHOWED WAS FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION 'N' check before you post something. Last but not the least delete this video or edit the video so that it will benefit everybody who have or are going to watch this video.

this is misleading, this is fractional distillation ..not just distillation. distillation requires a separation of dissolved solids from a liquids, lets say sea water. it involves evaporation followed by condensation or simply evaporation if its locally done. i welcome challenges. thank you
