We sometimes might be deluded by opinions taking them instead of facts, but after watching this video I am fully aware of the difference between facts and opinions. Now, I can firmly say that facts are based on objectivity and verifiability whereas opinions come from subjectivity and judgements. Thank you, teacher, for that piece of knowledge. I've subscribed to your channel.

There's some confusion about what "fact" and "true" mean. Something can be presented as a fact at any moment, but it doesn't mean that it is true to reality. This is pretty complicated stuff... but so are human beings and how they thin, right? :) Thanks for watching and supporting the channel

@@snaplanguage A very good point to underline it under this subject. Probably some (should I say 'most') people accept their feelings and emotions as 'truer' rather than 'subjective opinions'. Even if we say 'that is my opinion' still we don't mean that! :-)

The title speaks to me. It reminds me of my boss's opinion about me, where she thinks I can't do a shift by myself, when she doesn't even know that for a fact. What do you think? Is it wrong to use your opinion to stop something from happening--especially because you don't believe in someone--when your prediction is based on your opinion, not fact?

I love this. I've been researching fact vs opinion (vs belief) for my students. I teach ESL adults, so a simple video for kids hasn't satisfied my adult, critical thinking students (they are learning a new language, but often NOT new to critical thinking). However, this conversation is never-ending! My biggest question is this, because we soo quickly reach this issue. What happens (ex, in media when the FACTS are changed? Yes, research, research, research. But what "life-long learner" plan do we share for moving forward with this issue? Yep, I know this is a big one...(& I have thoughts...)
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 3 года назад
Thank you! I'm glad you found these reading videos which, in fact, were designed for older and adult learners. This can get pretty philosophical quickly, but dealing with changing facts is the nature of trying to understand the world around us. We formulate hypothesis based on prior knowledge, collect evidence, and accept that our findings reveal something factual. Yet, all this is based on the probability that the new evidence we found reveals something (rarely everything) about what we want to understand. As we learn new things, we may have to go back and re-interpret (even discard) previous findings. I think changing facts can be jarring because we let facts become beliefs. It's easier to accept new facts than to change old beliefs. Facts are unemotional; beliefs are at the core of how we see ourselves... if that makes any sense. (Well, I told you it gets pretty philosophical LOL) Thanks again for using the channel with your students. I hope you're enjoying the other videos on the channel

@@snaplanguage An example of what I mean happened in one of my classes. We were reading examples of fact and of opinion. The example was a statement about how many immigrants are allowed into this country per year per "The Immigration and [Naturalize] Act." The amount was 188,000. First, the name was incorrect. It's supposed to be Immigration and [Naturalization] Act of 1952. Then I noted that the amount was incorrect. I suppose that means our capability as citizens must include learning very high critical thinking skills and/or ability to specifically track these details ourselves in independent research. This is not likely in an entire society where education appears not to be accessible equally. Add to that what a help it would be if people could not post information unless it was first verified. but then we have to verify the verifier. An independent verifier appears to be an ultimate goal....One other example would be the way that politicians quote information that is mostly (not all are easily) identifiable as factual. Again, it appears that "misinformation" should not be allowed until it's verified. My goal here is how do I make an accurate decision on who to vote for in order to support my democracy? One moral is: when you lie, you really screw people.
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 3 года назад
Oh, yes! There's that, too. I think misinformation has always existed. One of my goals when I teach critical thinking in reading is to help students become informed consumers of information. Going straight to the source is one way of doing that but, of course, you don't always have the drive to check everything you read. You can also go to the source and not be able to understand it because it may be too technical. In that case, you should check the source delivering secondhand information. Does it come from a reputable source? Do they have expertise in the area? Are they clearly biased? Do they have a history of good or bad information? One type of discussion I have with my students is, "What source would you take health advice from? A blogger? An official source?..." Another clue my students and I discuss is sensationalism. Is it clickbait? (You can often tell right from the title.) Is the material appealing to emotions? It's interesting that many students end up getting "depressed" about it all and question why you should even read if no one is telling the truth... that is another discussion in an of itself. LOL Thanks again for the intriguing comment.
@amrojjeh
@amrojjeh 6 лет назад
"Eck's students did better in the course". Shouldn't that be an opinion rather than a fact? The reason why I think it should be an opinion is because it's assuming that the quality of a student's job is based on the student's grade. If it was changed to "Eck's students got a higher grade", then it would have been a fact. Right?
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 6 лет назад
That is a good point, and it is also the message in the video--that fact x opinion is not always as black, so you must analyze each situation carefully. If you define "better" (that is, higher grades), then you would be presenting the information as a fact. It's a fact that students earned "better"/"higher" grades. However, if you say that students who earned better or higher grades are also better students or that they learned better... well, that is arguable. You are presenting the information "as a fact," but you could also argue that grades do not necessarily reflect performance. You are basing an opinion based on the fact that they earned higher grades?... Thanks for watching and leaving an insightful comment! :D

These are both presented as facts. To verify the information, I just need to ask you. but how can one verify that the Earth is flat or not? there’s a lot of critics about the methods used to investigate the shape of the Earth
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 2 года назад
The short answer is that you can verify it in a number of science books. The longer answer is that the shape of celestial bodies is one of those facts that have been proved over and over using different methods. We even have photos of Earth from space, so that's pretty much settled. The critics may have a superficial understanding of the information so that, when they think they have found a hole in the theory, they are actually showing they don't understand the science. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I hope you enjoy the rest of the channel
@bolsasnara3746
@bolsasnara3746 2 года назад
@@snaplanguage Thanks for the answer, although I can’t agree completely with you. Actually there’s no picture of the whole planet because it would be necessary a huge distance to take such photo. At NASA website you’ll find the information that they took many pictures and merge them together to create the photos we see. I’m not saying that Earth is flat, but long time ago it was what most scientists thought. Just “believing in science” or in “science books” would be making the same mistake people did when believe the Earth was flat. There’s probably a lot of fanatics that claim the Earth is flat, but at the same time there’s a lot of fanatics that take for granted whatever “science” claims to be true. Real science though is based on the debate of ideas and should not allow tabus, as Karl Popper said scientific truths are always provisional.

So the statement, "The Earth is flat," is a fact? Because you can verify it and it's a false claim? Sorry I'm just confused about that part.
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 2 года назад
Not exactly. The statement is *presented* as a fact, which you can verify, and it’s a false claim.
@neilnatsumi
@neilnatsumi 2 года назад
@@snaplanguage Oh what I meant is based on the question, is it a fact or an opinion. So the statement "The Earth is flat" is an opinion?
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 2 года назад
That is being *presented* as a *fact.* By definition, facts are verifiable. When you verify this, you see that, although it is presented as a fact, it is not true. It is a false claim. The key here is that something can be *presented* a fact, yet presenting something as a fact does not mean it is true. May times we think that a fact and the truth are to interchangeable. When analyzing claims, they are not necessarily the same. I can express the following statement as a fact, “the moon is made of cheese.” That doesn’t make it true. :) I hope this clarifies it. Thanks again for watching and commenting 😎

Would you kindly help me to understand one controversial debate! Some people say that provocative dress can be a cause of rape. Is it a fact or an opinion? Please help me.
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 3 года назад
Hi, thanks for the interesting question. That’s a very complex issue. If you simply look at it simply from a “fact or opinion” perspective, when someone says “provocative dress cause can be a cause of rape,” they are *presenting it as a fact* (though they are hedging, too, if they say it “can be” a cause of rape). However, as I explained in the video, presenting something “as fact” *does not make it true.* People frequently do that in controversial debates; they “present something as a fact” because it sounds convincing, but you must still question whether what’s being presented as a fact is the only possible explanation for something. In the case of tying a person’s dress “causing” rape, it is a way to put the responsibility on the victim. People also say that being drunk can cause you to be raped. If you think about it, if a person is drunk, he or she is defenseless. Yes, getting that drunk is a stupid thing to do, but does that mean that the drunk person gave everyone permission to use their bodies? If I leave money on a table, does it mean anyone can steal it because “I was asking for it?” Or is stealing a crime whether I made it easy for the thief or not? Thanks for watching and, again, thanks for leaving a comment. :D

student "failing" a test. That's an opinion right? Different schools have different opinions in what that should be
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 3 года назад
I'd say that's stated as a fact. If *School A* requires a score of 50 and *School B* requires score of 80, students would still fail the test if they did not reach the minimum score. In this sentence, "The students must be stupid because they failed the test, the first part (stupid) is an opinion, and the second part (failed the test) is a fact. Failing a test does not mean someone is stupid. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching :D
@jasondads9509
@jasondads9509 3 года назад
@@snaplanguage Ah... in think i'm starting to get it now. So an opinion is something that that doesn't logically follow from facts presented. So for example if i say: Failing a test means you are stupid (fact) Student A fail a test. (fact) the that makes the statement "student A is stupid" a fact but if it is stated like: stupid people fail tests (fact) Student A is failed a test(fact) then "Student A is stupid" in this case would be an opinion since it doesn't logically follow. Just because it true that stupid people fail tests does not mean that non-stupid people cannot fail tests

hmm if a sentence says "Human will not be able to live long enough to witness the end of our home, Earth" that will be a Fact or opinion?
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 3 года назад
That statement is *PRESENTED as a fact* based on existing evidence, which can be verified. However, you cannot verify whether something will really happen in the future, so you could argue it's someone's veiled opinion being stated as a fact. It would be like saying, "I believe that humans will not be able to live long enough..." where "I believe that" makes it an opinion. So, as it is written, I'd say this is presented as a fact, but it gets into a grey area when you start analyzing what they person is really saying or the person's intended message. Are both correct? Also when we say dogs are better than cats we should also say in my opinion or it is obvious? and a last question..my friend didnt come to school but i know that he usually dont come school because he play video games..if i assume that he didnt come in school because of playing video games is a fact or an opinion ?
@KillingAddiction

"The first man says I think it is raining and the second says it is raining." These are both factual claims because both are either true or false. The first man either does or doesn't think it's raining, because there's no third option (i.e. thinking and, at the same time, not thinking it's raining is a logical contradiction).
