So pleased I found this! Not only was I going to hire someone to do tons of sanding, I see now that I don't need to, & I have several antique pieces to do. Love it!
I thought I liked the chest in the first video, but when you applied the glaze...🤩. I was watching someone yesterday who said they hated to see someone spray paint the hardware. What??? That gunmetal look was like the jewelry for that piece! Each to his own, I guess... Great job! 👏👏👏
Love watching your videos. I agree with your distressing tips; less is truly more and you're glazing is perfect. You're truly an expert in your field and share truly great information and tips.
Nice work Mr. Shab. I didn't think I would like the hardware or glazing, but yeah, the whole thing is much better. That kind of furniture is built a hundred times better than what you can buy. Again, 15 years from now, you could always completely strip it, so an overall win. One thing I would use those wooden knobs, the plain round ones painted the same as the body. I like it though. "Like"
Good to hear from ya again! You're right. It can be stripped down. I actually almost did that to make a third video but I've got custom orders needing to get done so I just sold it and moved on. One day I'm going to do a video where I buy a painted dresser from someone else, strip it, and restore it. I think that will be a fun one.
Love your work. Always so professional. I hate just using wax instead of a topcoat. Your work is always done in a professional manner! Very impressive.
Awesome! Thank you. I am moving to Boston soon and got a dresser for free from the current tenants living in the apartment I’m gonna move in! Want to paint it like a dark brown. This video and one before it were so helpful!
Please do a Crib. I've been looking all over youtube for a refurbished crib but I couldn't find any good videos. I'll still be using your techniques and tips to refurbish my twin nursery anyway.
Love your videos. You have changed my painting from chalk paint to water based satin paint. Here in UK we don’t seem to have the choice of paint you have in the US. I love the glaze you use instead of wax. Just doing my first piece your way. Hoping for good results with paint and stuff available here. I live in the Very Small Cathedral City of Saint Asaph in North Wales a beautiful part of UK. Thanks for all your tutorials (without the stupid music which is a background nuisance). Please keep it up. Anita
thanks! Very interesting and helpful. I really want to paint my dresser but didn't want to sand. Started with a black stain and oh my what a mess. I think I will start over with paint.
I'm thoroughly impressed once again! You obviously enjoy or have a real love for what you do becuz it shows during the process as well as the end result, which is magnificent in my opinion!! There's not too many your age who takes the time to pursue and put to good use talent such as yours. Thank you so much for sharing! Keep up the good work! 👍
American furniture has so much more character than stuff here in Australia. Love what you do and im inspired. but I cant seem to find too much at bargain prices to do up then flip, everyone wants top dollar 😏
Yeah... I hear that a lot from people in Australia or England. I think y'all have it the worst there though. I wish I had more insight on the furniture there to help you out.
I would love to see you do a piece in the denim blue with a shadow of black on the edges with silver hardware. I have seen this done but I would love to see your take on it. It is beautiful and I would like to do a bedroom set in this color. It is also beautiful in the burgundy with the same technic.
This is great... thanks for all the info and your delivery is great. I’ve been working on some projects lately. Can I ask why does the poly cause discoloration on some projects? How can I prevent it?
It turned out beautiful!! I’m a big fan of distressing because in helps flaws blend in like you said. So now that you have used glaze with the brush and with the sprayer, which one do you like the best?
Love your work Shabby! My wife and I have been refinishing furniture as of late. You definitely showed me some useful technique on some upcoming projects. Have you done any whitewash pieces. I have someone that has inquired with me about doing their china cabinet. They mentioned a whitewash (I ahven't done that yet). I have a couple pieces I am going to try your gray glaze technique. My next goal is to get a paint sparyer like yours. What spray tips do you use. I am not fond of the cheap one my wife got awhile back and like the preformance I have seen with yours. Keep up the good work and I will stay in touch.
Beautiful piece! I have a few that I'm going to try using the same method as you did on this dresser. Do you have a video that shows your workspace set up? Looks like you have a paint booth, but is it indoor/outdoor, etc? Curious to see!
Yeah. Kinda hard to see in the video compared to in person. It gives it a bit of a streaky look on flat surfaces and sticks into the edges and crevices.
Experience pretty much. There are certain woods that will bleed terribly. Mahogany, cherry, pine, and oak are really bad about bleeding their oils into the paint. Priming prevents this. Also, if you don't sand before painting, you might be able to get away with skipping priming. For the most part, I prime just about everything just to be safe.
I learned so much from your video. Would you mind to tell me again paint sprayer you used doesn’t need compressor? You use satin or eggshells finish? Thank you so much
The sprayers that I use in my video are Wagner and Graco sprayers. You can find them at Home Depot, Lowes, or Amazon. None of those sprayers need a compressor. I typically use a satin paint for my projects and I top coat with satin or semi-gloss depending on the project. Top coat determines your final sheen. Thanks for watching my videos!
Looks great, as usual!! Curious, is furniture painting or RU-vid or maybe something entirely different your main source of income? Wanting to quit my full time jobs to refurbish furniture instead..... thanks for any advice 😉
I've been painting furniture full time for 7 years now. RU-vid was a way for me to show how I do things so I didn't have to constantly reply to messages with a long response. My channel has been kinda taking off a bit in the past year so now I'm making money from both!
Since I am using a damp rag and water based glaze, I can keep putting it in water and using the same rag. So one rag with traditional glaze. I'll probably go through 2 rags when glazing with wood stain. You use a dry rag in that process and oil based products dont wash out like water based.
I have left chalk paint unwaxed and it is hard to clean, shows dirt and fingerprints easily and will wipe off if you try to scrub it. I don't recommend leaving it uncoated. Even dark colors will show greasy fingerprints.
@@ThatShabbyGuy Shabby, when you were wiping the glaze off, I was thinking why get a rag dirty? Just use that sweatshirt. Just kidding, you got to have clothes to wear for this only. I personally get more paint on myself than you do. Again, I like it, just think the hardware is a little too ornate for such a simple dresser, and I guess you did too. Painting it that grey helped allot. Great work. Good tip with nail heads for those that don't know it!
@@ThatShabbyGuy If you go to Salvation Army and tell them you want Tshirts for rags, they will just give you them. I would wash them first in HOT water, though.
I agree. The point of this project was to show a few products and techniques. Only so much I can show with slapping paint on and calling it a day. The techniques might not look great on this piece but my viewers are able to get some ideas of what they might want to do on their projects. I liked it plain also though lol
Damn I wish you'd upload more frequently. Absolutely f**king love the content. Starting to do it as a business venture for my company! Facebook.com/sammonsHS
I'm working on uploading twice a month. I'd like to set regular upload days but I'm just not there yet. My overall goal is to do weekly videos. Baby steps! I appreciate you watching my channel and bearing with my upload schedule though!
