Distressor Memory Cap Repair - How To DIY

In this video I go over how to replace the memory cap in an Empirical Labs Distressor. The Distressor is SUPPOSED to remember your settings when you turn the unit off and on again, but if it's not doing that, it probably means this cap is bad and needs to be replaced. If that is indeed the case, it’s a very quick repair. If you’re unsure, I recommend contacting Empirical Labs first. Their service team is great.
As recommended to me by Empirical Labs directly, below are two compatible capacitors that work for this particular repair:

This unit is from 2012, so the cap lasted me about 10 years. Not bad really, considering how often it gets used, and considering it’s a $3 part and a 15 minute repair at most. Good luck!

Thanks for posting this. My cap needs to be replaced. BTW, anyone who's working on electronics should know about the Knipex 7871125 flush cutters. They have a little spring on one of the jaws that catch wire ends so they don't shoot into the chassis when you're clipping off leads. Should be about $30, best nippers ever.

Very cool thank you, to me he make one little mistake, before put unit in the rack he would test it, because if the unit does not work correctly he will needed to take it off again, open it again etc. He know what he is doing indeed

I actually did do this, but didn’t film it. So we installed it and then showed it working. 👍

What is that little pump used for exacly?

You heat up the solder until it melts and then the pump sucks out the old solder so the pads are totally clear and empty to accept a new part. If the pads (holes) were full of solder you couldn’t push the new part through easily, so this Makes it much easier to replace parts!
