I like browsing Reddit sometimes for random topics or things I am just curious about. I thought (a couple days ago) I would go over there to see what they thought about this cover. I only read one thread about it but it was almost unanimously disliked or hated.
David Draiman's stare in that video is like he is cutting through your body and reaching his hands out to grab your heart and saying "You need to Listen to Me!". He achieves this in one split second stare. Oh how powerful! I was alive to hear the launch of Simon and Garfunkel's version and am so happy to still be alive to hear Disturbed's spin.
His tones, his resonates, the sound of his voice just goes through you... The pitch at the right time as the words.... It just invokes feelings you can't help but have, I cry everything...
We played this at my daddy’s funeral. It was the last song I ever listened to with him. I cry every time I hear this, but I really wanted to watch your reaction. Thank you, guys. Thank you
“The original version makes you think. This version makes you feel.“ You nailed it. That’s exactly the difference between the two. I hope mankind heeds the warning now.
This could be my most favorite song of all time. Nothing has ever moved me as much as this cover. Love to watch the reactions from people hearing this for the first time. Everyone expresses the same feelings and reactions. Wow!!!!!
I think the best thing about watching the various reactions is that in the beginning is that people pause and do whatever their reaction is after the first and second verses, but after that they almost always just let it play.
I too love watching people's reaction to this song. Even when they don't mention getting chills, you see them rubbing their arms. I can't stop. Have watched dozens of reactions. Most people say, "Wow" at least once.
100% agree. It was seeing someone else's reaction to this at the same time as I first heard this version that got me hooked on these reaction type videos. I have watched tons of people reacting to this song since. And you are right.... every one who reacts to this video is blown away.
I never listened to the words in the Simon and Garfunkel version. David Draiman's version makes you listen to the words! When I heard it the first time, I was so moved I played it over and over the while weekend! The fact that Paul Simon's words transcended generations gave me a whole new appreciation of Paul Simon as a songwriter!
George, you would NEVER be “speechless”! ;-). Simon and Garfunkel wrote it as a sad song with a hint of anger....they were saying “beware”. Disturbed turned it into a song of rage because people didn’t listen.
I'm an oldie. I've listened to the original thousands upon thousands of times enjoying the harmonies and the smooth ride of emotions. Disturbed has me on another rollercoaster ride but no longer the gentle kiddie version. This is a mega Rollercoaster ride that shakes you to the core screaming with glee and amazement. I cannot get enough of the ride and I don't want to get off. It's like discovering a new DiVinci, Swan Lake, TajMajal. David Draimon is the artist extraordinaire. A timeless beauty.
I've learned that David Draiman and Disturbed address depression, addiction and suicide during every concert, performance offering support and understanding. They are one of the⁶ most popular, loved bands of our time!
David Draiman is ranked in the top 100 vocalist of all time. His live performance on Conan won him a Grammy nomination. This metal band is so very versatile they have done several covers that they make their own as well as their own songs that is done for their fans well being such as Hold on to Memories and another song to fight depression, drug abuse and suicide "A Reason to Fight", the official live version will show you how their fans react to these two songs that they preform at every concert.
This song has so many different meanings... When schools, especially public schools from kindergarten through high school run out of funding the first programs they cut ✂️ are the art's, music, theater etc. Also, ISOLATION, DIVISION, LONELINESS, NOT COMMUNICATING, NOT STANDING UP FOR OUR RIGHTS OR EXPRESSING OURSELVES AND WHAT WE BELIEVE IN, I could go on and on.
God: Do you want the voicecof an angel or demon? David: "Yes" that's a perfect description for his vocals...powerful, heart and soul wrenching, perfection!!!!
"The original makes you think, this one makes you feel...". There is simply no better way to state the comparison. You two greatly impress me with your music appreciation and analysis.
I grew up with the original version, but I love this one so much better! Gives me goosebumps every time. Try "The Light" by Disturbed. You'll like it if you liked this one. ❤️
*BRACE YOURSELF* *It doesn't matter what your ethnicity, sex, age, religion, sexual preference or anything else is. This song hits everyone in the feels every time.*
It's said that "the people bowed and prayed to the neon-god they made" could mean cell phones, especially with the verse about "talking without speaking and hearing without listening" and it all makes great sense...only there were NO cell phones when Simon and Garfunkel wrote this! Were they the prophets?
The neon God was commercialism , even back then you could see what was comming the lies of media on Vietnam, corrupt politicians sold out to corporate interest and the industrial military complex and the silencing of dissenting voices, kind of like Beijin Biden and the Oligarchs of San Fransico, there are strong similarities
performance was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! his voice was beautiful and haunting.....................the piano stirs the soul and the bass drum pounding out those two times is haunting and the orchestra sets the mood in the background perfectly
Disturbed's live performance on the Conan O'Brien show dated 3/28/16 is phenomenal. Dave Draiman's vocals coupled with the orchestral background will have you saying "wow" over and over again.
I love the intensity of Draimans vocals. Such a timeless classic done with heart and stellar execution...I've must have watched this version a hundred times. Well done!
The Conan Live version is incredible. I've watched it loads of times and I still get chills - as I do with the video you've just reacted to. His voice!! The original version is one of my favourite songs from Simon and Garfunkel - I've listened to it many times over the years. But this takes it to another level - amazing.
Your description nailed it, both of the original and the cover. And those chills? You never lose them. I’ve seen this more times than I can count, and still get them every single time.
Along with Cash's "Hurt", this is my favorite cover of all time. I love that it takes the exact same lyrics and gives them a different meaning by the way they're sung. Just remarkable.
David Draiman...a voice God given...his voice is like the 4th instrument in the band....have never heard a timbre like his. Can go from baritone with vibrato to tenor , from clear as crystal to grit and back on a dime! His control is awesome. Have never in all my years heard such a voice!
This is an outstanding version of the original version. He did a fantastic job on this rendition. So much more powerful and dramatic. I loved the original and I love this one so much more! So apparent to this time we are having. So relevant! Thank you so much for this song and your reaction.
After 50 to 60 years someone finally did of cover of this song that's worthy of the original. I was a young man when the original came out. I've waited a long time.
Well done guys! love the original but sorry... Disturbed own this long now... like you said only the words were really the same... stay safe & stay strong.
You guys hit the nail on the head! Total goose bumps rendition of another Artist’s message they predicted, he just brought it to light this is today this is our world today it’s all “tech” no in~person stimulation… we as people need that communication of seeing, touching, feelings like you fellows I’m proud that you as I get the message 💋I believe his has a baritone as well DONT know if you know he was and is a trained “cantor”. Go~Bro’s!!!
WOW George, you nailed it! The original makes you THINK......Disturbed’s version makes you FEEL. Never put it into those words myself, but that is exactly correct.
I agree with what everybody else wrote so I'm just going to say ditto. Paul Simon heard Disturbed version and he started to cry and said that the song was meant for David Draiman to sing. If you haven't done pentatonix-sound-of-silence it falls somewhere in the middle between warning and rage and it it still has a little bit of hope that mankind can turn it around. This is the absolute best cover of any song I have ever heard
I've gone down a rabbit hole of watching reactions to this song. Lots of reactions focus on vocal capabilities (which are powerful), but they miss the point of the song. I'm always happy to see the reactions that speak to the meaning of the song, and how the voice lends itself to the message. That's what it's all about. Thanks for honing in on the "invisible threat" of silence. Really profound.
I love to watch your reactions to all the great music of the last 6 or 7 decades. What makes it even more enjoyable is I play a drinking game when I watch. Every time one of you says Dude, I take a shot of Jim Beam. My favorites are Pink Floyd songs, I’m never sober by the end of the song!
Someone wrote the perfect description of the song. Simon and Garfunkel's version was the warning to society. Disturbed's version is the anger that the warning wasn't heeded
What is it about these 2 boys that I watch their reactions over and over, we couldn't be any more apart, I'm a 60 year old woman living in victoria, British Columbia Canada, but yet I am addicted to these 2. I hope they are safe where they are, sending hugs.
I loved your reaction! You were emotional, paying attention to both David's unique voice and the quality of the video production, the gradation of the plot and the lyrics of the song. Most editors miss at least one of these things. Well done!
I'm my view the mix of Simon & Garfunkel lyrics, David's voice and Disturbed's interpretation, did a wonderful thing. And this new version probably introduced many to the original song. Last consideration: music is a language with always different harmony and rhythm, it can make trilling our soul and our bones or not but it is never waste or trash.
The best cover of this song, like, EVER!!! So much more powerful than the original, goosebumps and shivers...amazing!!! 👑👑👑 The original sounded like a warning to the future. This sounds like anger that the warning was not heard.
Chills. "like when you have a fever".Brilliant way to describe what happens to me when I hear this. You guys are so so in to great music. I mean, you get immersed in it. I love watching your reactions. I have been immersed in music my whole life. Daily. Always. So I appreciate you so much!
Great reaction. You should definitely react to their live version from the Conan O'Brien show. Despite being sick that day, lead singer David Draiman delivered a performance for the ages, complete with an orchestra. Conan celebrated the video of their performance as it was the first video from his show to get 100 million views. Keep up the great work!
Yes please do both versions...Dolores sang it as a song of protest when 2 young boys were killed in a bombing...it was during “the troubles “ between the Catholics and Protestants in Ireland and England. If I’ve got it wrong someone will correct. Dolores was to sing with the Bad Wolves doing their version but she passed away the morning she was to record. The Bad Wolves released their version and donated the money to her children...both versions are incredible and tie together visually very well 🖖🏻🇨🇦💥
I'm thinking maybe you gentlemen like this performance!!!!!!!!!! I love it when you 'get it' like I 'got it'. About a wk. ago my first hearing and pretty much obsessed since. It is just so, so very amazing. No wonder the MILLIONS of followers! OK, I'll shut up. Thank you for letting your hearts show. Fran NM
Love you, guys! When I first listened to this version, I was speechless and had chills just like you! His voice is so perfect and the way he expresses his emotions and transmits it to the listener is completely unique! He is a great storyteller. Every time I listen to this song, I feel an immediate need to be a better and more loving person.
The Rascals (initially known as The Young Rascals) was an American rock band, formed in Garfield, New Jersey, United States, in 1965. Between 1966 and 1968 the New Jersey act reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 with nine singles, including the #1s "Good Lovin'" (1966), "Groovin'" (1967), and "People Got to Be Free" (1968), as well as big radio hits such as the much-covered "How Can I Be Sure." I want you guys to react to "Good Lovin'"
You guys are great!! I love this song and I enjoyed you both (as well as all the others) as you discover this video!! My favorite song these past 5+ years!! Released 51 years ago (Simon and Garfunkel) and now this version... WOW!!
This is my first time seeing you guys. I have watched probably 20 reactions to this song. And watching YOUR reaction brought tears to my eyes, along with the goosebumps I get every time I listen to this song. David Dramain is an amazing singer. 🥰🎹🎼🥰
Paul Simon, who wrote the song and sang the original that became a massive hit, was asked about the Disturbed version, and he said, "It's their song now."
7 seconds into the music, you both turn heads and look at each other... the hook is set, you are now alerted, already knowing that something special is about to go down!
The song is about communication, which we started to lose when TV started to become popular. (And the people bowed down and prayed, to the neon God they made). Paul Simon said this song was a warning, David's version was the rage because the warning was ignored. Paul Simon told him after listening to this cover that the song was now David's
Another diferent and marvellous cover of this song is the one made by Pentatonix, a capella group, please react to it if you don't know them, you will be surprised for sure.
Perfect reaction! This is fun, watch it again with the sound turned all the way down, and just watch Patrick and George's reaction. You can tell where they are in the song by reading their faces.
I am so glad you reviewed Simon and Garfunkel's original from 1964. I loved both your reactions to this cover, I am a child of the 60's and S&G came out when I was in high school. this cover by Disturbed along with the video is the BEST it touches your soul and really gets S&G message to the core of my being goosebumps and chills and tears, many others too. I would also like to suggest the artist Neil Diamond and his original video, "Neil Diamond Talks About "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" Then Plays It, Live 1971" my favorite by Neil Diamond
It is very rare that you come across a cover version that tells the story, meaning and the has the feeling of the song that outshines the original but here is a prime example
