Disused Railway Walk - Derby Friargate Line Ilkeston to Breadsall
In this disused railway walk i follow part of the former Great Northern Railways Derby Friargate Line between West of Ilkeston via West Hallam Station and onto the outskirts of Breadsall.
Walking a very overgrown trackbed, this closed railway since 1964 has seen little footfall in some places. We also get to see the filled in location of Morley Tunnel, now infilled.
This line is well known for the famous Bennerley Viaduct and was once a very inportant railway line linking Nottingham to Derby.

Hi very good video I used to walk from Breadsall to the Bennerley viaduct through Morley tunnel when I was a kid 50 years ago wasn’t overgrown then

The old footage of West Hallam Station was fantastic and also very sad. I believe the station is now a garden centre.

The caged motor and inspection covers on the incline to Morley tunnel are i believe something to do with methane for capture or flared off as waste I presume from the backfill from the tunnel , There’s an identical setup at the old alabaster mines on Aston lane in Chellaston also just outside Derby which was also landfilled after use . 👍

What a great walk and explore, just want to see the rest of the line, if possible, as well as a look round the still existing Friargate station.

I grew up around there and 20 odd years ago there was loads to see but much of the overgrowth has been removed and the area now fenced off and kind of scalped. You used to be able to get under the arches at the station that span miles underground

Ah, the memories, been with you since that first effort and it's been tremendous seeing you develop your presenting skills. There was some good stuff in this video and you have obviously used that to help you improve the quality. Great stuff mate.

Great first video, I think I do remember this. The UK is full of canals and canal boat tours, would be nice is track was put back on all the abounded track bed and had torus of the UK country side...... Thanks for your time and work......

I remember that opening shot of the track still in situ, pleasure to watch it again though. Where were you, we couldn't see how young you looked😃😁🤣 You've maintained your high standard since then with the history and additional photos and it's been a pleasure to follow you through your countryside👍🏻👏

You can do a then and now comparison this weekend as the next video was only walked yesterday 😀 There were a lot of loud birds around too.

The friargate line went to Egginton Juntion the GNR built an extension from Egginton to Dove Junction which joined up with the NSR which ran from Marston Junction to Burton North Stafford Junction onto the Derby-Birmingham main line great video

I remember walking to Morley Tunnel from West Hallam station in around 1971/2 . Following the approximate route in the video ( apart from the road sections) The tunnel was still there then.

Derby Friagate Ant is remarkably still there just next to Handysides Bridge, I used to play on the Station site when I was a kid which was back in the early seventies, the buildings were long gone but the stations subway was accessible in tbe early eighties when tbe car garage services vacated the arches below, the old cooling stage of the GNRs slack Lane engine shed was visible for years but was inaccessible as a chemical plant had taken over tbe site, the GNR warehouse still stands of course but has been damaged by fire again I'm told, the station on my last visit was heavily overgrown ( subway filled in ) and most of tbe GNRs long viaduct through Derby has been removed the large brick viaduct which carried the line over the Midland line to Racecourse Station was demolished around 1972.

All the bridges around Common Lane were damaged by subsidence. Common Lane was rebuilt in BR days but Morley Lane was not and was in a real state by closure. I don't know whether it was demolished or infilled. There was another farm access bridge near Lime Lane, close to where you found the platelayers' hut, but that was demolished around 1960. There is another missing bridge just topside of the A608. All that remains is a few bricks. The blue brick bridge near Lime Lane is unusual. Most were symmetrical but this has one arch offset to allow a brook to flow unhindered. The GNR had to culvert it and keep anything from getting into it from the railway as part of the planning conditions because it was used by Broomfield Hall.

I just love stuff like this. It's in my blood. My great grandad was a (steam train) fireman and my other great grandad worked for the British transport police. Then there's my dad who was a hard-core train spotter as a kid. Hard-core because him and a mate never thought twice about jumping on a steamtrain from London to somewhere else in the country without telling his mum 🤣😂

Lovely video, thanks for posting. I wonder if you'd be interested in getting in touch with Sustrans and/or Derbyshire Counyy Council and suggesting to them that the route you walked could be reactivated as a footpath like what you went onto near the end of the video?

Friar gate station was far closer to the centre, the platforms are still there overgrown and the massive GNR building. Sadly it’s been fenced off as someone set the building on fire last year

The track bed from Morley tunnel run as far as the paddock pub and is part of the national cycling network sustrain may do more work on this route at some point fingers crossed 🤞

Walked large parts of that route just after closure. Morley tunnel was too wet to walk through though, sadly i had no camera at that time..
