Management Consulting Interviews at MBB or BIg 4 are difficult to crack. And for that matter, any management consulting interview is going to be very difficult to crack if you don’t prepare well. But on top of that, if you don’t come from a repeat college or university and don’t have the support of the placement cell of that particular school, it becomes even more difficult to crack. However, there are ways through which you can get into Management Consulting without having a top-school MBA.
In this video, I have discussed 3 steps that you can use to get into top-tier management consulting firms without a formal MBA degree. These 3 steps start with the free courses, then paid courses, and lastly how you can draft a perfect resume that would land you a consulting job. I studied at NIT Rourkela and without going through the traditional MBA route, I landed a job at McKinsey and worked there for 8+ years. I did my MBA after I started working for McKinsey.
From B.Tech from NIT Rourkela to Management Consulting in NYC, these are the 3 steps I would recommend to anybody who wants to into Management Consulting from undergrad. The first step is the free courses, and these include the course offered by Emory University on Coursera called Introduction to Management Consulting. This course will tell you what consultants do daily, their salaries, and who are the clients hiring consultants. This course will act as a stepping stone for you to decide if consulting is the right job for you vs. not. You can audit this course for free and only have to pay for the certificate which is not necessary if you are just looking to get into consulting.
The second course on the list is Data-Driven Decision Making by PwC. This course is taught by an ex-wc partner and is a great starting point for you to understand how Data is used to make the right decisions. This course will help you understand how consultants use data to solve problems. This will not only help you in management consulting but it will also help you in the broader scheme of problem solving that you have to do for the rest of your career.
You will learn how business presentations are made, how the storylines are constructed, and how business presentations are shown to the clients. Again, this will give a fundamental layer to your understanding of business presentations. But if you’re really into consulting, then you should go and look for those paid courses where you will gain real-life experience. You can get that practical exposure at Blue Chapter. You can attend this session to learn how to solve a real-life problem. Emory University also says that it is important for you to have that practical experience under your belt much more than theoretical knowledge. After completing this course you can move to a beginner to advanced Excel course. This Udemy course will help you a lot in understanding and acquiring the crucial skill of using MS Excel well.
The last part is crafting a great resume for yourself. If you look up the website of any management consulting firm, you will notice that they have an “Our People” section below their sub-sections such as marketing & sales, operations, etc. You can open this page and see what exactly these people, who are mostly senior partners or people who have had long stints in these management consulting firms, you can see what they have done in their careers. If your career journey has some overlap with theirs in terms of what you’ve done in your career, then building your resume and getting an interview call would not be difficult.
Hope you find this video valuable, See you in the next one.

Thank you Pavan for this succinct yet detailed step by step process+video. Always grateful for you and your content 🙌👏🙌 Can you also make a video about courses that seasoned consultants can take? (Consultants with ~2-4 years of experience - I understand by ~2-4 years consultants will develop some functional expertise/direction and taking courses in those direction is straightforward - But if that is not the case - what courses can they take - for example courses related to ESG, digital marketing, etc.)

Hi Pavan, About the paid course it also includes the internship experience too as it helps a practical scenario. What about the chances of getting into MBB after learning your paid course.
@PavanSathiraju
@PavanSathiraju 10 месяцев назад
Hi Rahul, As mentioned in the video - if you already have good overlap on resume front, then this course is an EXCELLENT addition. If you don't have a good overlap - you need to wait to get that overlap. Even then the course is helpful. But, course shouldn't be your priority in that case:)
