What are vulnerable marine ecosystems?
These are communities linked to the seafloor that are vulnerable to disturbance. The species that inhabit VMEs are some of the most diverse but unknown in the ocean. They provide important ecosystem services that benefit humans.
ICES Working Group on Deep-water Ecology (WGDEC) collect and analyze the evidence on the distribution of vulnerable marine ecosystems. This information is translated into scientific advice, to provide advice to managers on the the known or likely distribution of vulnerable marine ecosystems.
