Often I get asked about donating the long hose from either the mouth, or the chest. Many individuals practice this skill, and are often left frustrated--sidemount instructors included.
One common technique you see is unclipping the cylinder and swinging it forward to reroute the hose. With aluminum cylinders, it's quite easy. However it's not as adaptable with steel cylinders as you are completely changing the fulcrum point of your body+system leaving you off balance.
Instead, avoid the unnecessary approach and learn how to deploy, and stow while maintaining full control and team awareness. This approach will work regardless of the cylinder you are using, and even in tight places.
I hope this helps you practice, and learn a new very important skill. A few tidbits will be how to properly donate a regulator, and maintain control at all times.
