There is a lot of buzz on the internet right now around diversity, equity, and inclusion in video games. But are the games coming out even that "diverse"? And if there are more diverse representations in video games.... are there potential BENEFITS for our brains in engaging with stories that don't look exactly like ours?
Note: representation and diversity in media is a very complex topic. I am sure I will talk about it more in the future, but please know that this is scratching the surface of that topic, and there may be pieces that I missed in interest of giving a better 'overview'. Please feel free to let me know in the comments if there are more specific areas that might be good to delve into for a deeper dive!

Addressing a few common themes from these comments: - yes, representation and diversity can be done poorly and have a distinct vibe of "tokenism" or "being forced" when it is done poorly. However, the majority of comments I see on this are not critiquing stories and how they represent characters-- instead it's just "they're present and I don't like it", which many of y'all in the comments have played out again and again. - if you're mad bc my hair is a bright color, you might need to chill. It does not affect you. - re: "Yasuke was a retainer not a samurai": all samurai were retainers. "Retainer" just meant that samurai were PAID to fight by local nobility (daimyo), not that they were some secret second category of samurai (as I recall there were some hierarchies within samurai societies but they had more to do with "you're the son of so and so" or "this dude has never lost a fight" than "retainers vs. not retainers".) Don't challenge a neurodivergent writer with an interest in history who read a book about samurai at 16 and then hyperfixated on learning everything about them for 6 months :P - if you hate this, you don't have to leave a comment to let me know that. It will populate more of my videos and videos like it on your feed. Or do, I'll take the free engagement if you insist on giving it :)

The whole Yasuke thing could be completely side-stepped if they just made Naoe the main character they showed in most promotional material and just showed him as an alternative playable character, But instead it feels like its the opposite. (Which granted may be the journalists fault but still.) Either way it's gonna come out and play like shit anyways. (Like all AC Games after unity.) So why are people still arguing about a game that won't do anything groundbreaking and will probably be forgotten after a month. Just play Nioh 1&2 since Yasuke is cooler there anyways.

Diversity, in and of itself, accomplishes nothing. It is a tool of narrative in gaming, movies and stories and can be great for expanding the setting. When overdone it causes massive cognitive dissonance among the audience and can ruin enjoyment of a product. It also doesn’t help when those preaching “inclusivity” use racial and sex-based charged language in an exclusive manner such as “if you are a white man then this is not made for you” and then blame white men for not showing up. When that happens, as has been happening in AAA games and Hollywood then it isn’t about being diverse and inclusive but about being racist, sexiest and exclusive.
@Alfonso88279

Diversity in and of itself accomplishes a lot. That's the key for success in incredibly huge series like Dungeons and dragons. It helps people spread the horizons of their expectations, to assimilate new/different ideas, even just by finding different kinds of people in the story. Diversity also represents reality more accurately in almost any context, historical or geographic, and it's the key not just for entertainment. It's the key for our survival as a cvilization and democracy.
@Dragon_Lair
@Dragon_Lair 23 дня назад
@@Alfonso88279 Diversity accomplishes nothing more than existing. It's neither good nor bad, it just is. How it is used can be good or bad. How Hollywood and gaming companies used it in the past was good, how George R Martin used it for the Song of Ice and Fire series was good, how Tolkien used it was amazing. How modern Hollywood and AAA gaming companies use it is racist, sexist and exclusive. Dungeons and Dragons is a shadow of what it once was after all of its scandals. OGL debaacle where WotC/Hasbro tried to scam players, content creators and third party publishers, sending the Pinkertons after a youtuber and his wife, its own executives saying the game will be better with less white men playing it, making it racist and exclusive. Trying to say drow and orcs are racist caricatures back in 2020 when they published an article called "Dungeons and Dragons and Diversity" only to make orcs racist caricatures in the artwork of their upcoming new Player's Handbook by making them all mexicans, making them massive hypocrites. It only represents reality in melting pot cities like New York or LA. Move away from big cities, go back in time when travel was super slow and everything and everywhere becomes a lot less diverse because it would take too long to go anywhere and there wouldn't be any reason to leave where you came from. Even in the modern day geographic regions have huge majorities and minorities, and neither is good nor bad for existing, but it becomes less like reality to have a bunch of ethnicities represented in regions where they aren't from in a time period where moving somewhere would take months to even years to get there with no guarantee of finding work, making a living or so on. Diversity does nothing to make medieval settings realistic at all. In fact, the most realistic ones would have little to no diversity, save for a story of, say, an invading force where the invaders are foreigners of whatever the setting happens to be, and the invaders would just as likely be seen as the villains.

@@Alfonso88279 Agreed, diversity in and of itself does indeed accomplish a lot! In fact, there's a dearth of cannibal representation in media, we should rectify that. Also, incestuous parent-child couplings, there's too few in movies, add more. And beastiality enjoyers are never shown! Add them too! I'm sick of seeing necrophiliacs painted as monsters, diversify the attitude by displaying them in a positive light. You clearly don’t understand what issue people are actually taking. You brush off the entire issue as “people get mad that video games characters don’t look like them” when this is just not the issue. You talk about how people are unhappy with Assassins Creed Shadows because of Yasuke, and then point out that most video game protagonists are white as if that’s a counterpoint to the Yasuke backlash. News flash, nobody is upset that the samurai isn’t white. Your idea that people who are unhappy about the state of things have “low cognitive flexibility” and are just upset because they’re “surprised” to see non white men in video games is laughable as well and just shows that you either do not understand what people are upset about, or you are arguing in bad faith. Also, the whole “what you see happening isn’t real, you’re just experiencing a cognitive fallacy and have probably been brainwashed by society” thing is textbook gaslighting. So yea I guess maybe you are just arguing in bad faith. Finally, your “meditation” at the end of the video is absolute cringe and not doing anything to dispel the idea that your ideology is a cult.

I know that the game is basically a fantasy based on those times. But for a historical aspect, details of said game is off. If a samurai is wearing armor in public, expect a showing in form of a parade, guarding, or just a person seeking to kill people in those times. (Normally, Samurai would keep armor stashed while in rest or peace times) Iga is not a small village. Trade center is more likely. Shinobi can be Samurai. Shinobi is a job. Samurai the title. Hattori Hanzo for example. He's of the Iga. (Yes, he exist in that time period) Many of modern media show him as a classic ninja. But he wears samurai armor. Yasuke is a retainer (his actual job) with a Samurai title. Oda viewed him as a curiosity and kept him close. At those times, the Japanese would stare because Yasuke is black. This is an oddity to them. And the closest interpretation is circus entertainer. (The Japanese did not see that many outsiders) A Shinobi's job is to gather and return with the information. Infiltration and scouting is their role. Combat is considered the last option. (disadvantageous without armor) Assassinations are a part of their job. Disrupting the enemy and stealing intel are more common. Wearing blue is the correct uniform color for them. This blends with the night sky more than black.

@@emmjaygames not in the capacity of how he is portrayed in the game, and it still begs the question of why would they do that? Like what if I made a game with a great degree of historical accuracy about african kings, where part of the appeal is the culture and diversity of such a place except you played as a John Boyes, an American african king who is white? Well the difference between that and Yasuke is that Boyes actually served as an african king while Yasuke was never a samurai outside of fictional media in japan. There is an expectation of character culture and origin based on the previous titles, Japan is the only country they did this too, not even Valhalla got this treatment. At the very least you also play as a japanese woman, probably because they couldnt find any historical black woman in japan to play Yasuke's female counterpart.

Hello, although I disagree radically with everything you say and stand for, I can concede that this was a well fundamented video, and youre clearly educated and smart. However, I believe that your strong political bias and in group preferences stop you from seeing the objective truth about many of the topics discussed. Id love to adress the first one first, and point out that the "gamer" statistics were grossly misrepresented. You and I both know that many of these statistics are grossly skewed in order to misrepresent the percentage of women "gamers". This is done through mobile or "cellphone" "gaming"... I think that any person, with even the most cursory knowledge of the term and its implications, can agree that a housewife playing candy crush cannot seriously be considered a gamer (if not for any of the other multiple reasons, primarily because of the huge differences between markets and products) I really hope you reply, however, even if you dont, im glad to be what appears to be, the first "like" on a video you clearly worked hard on.

@emmjaygames 24 дня назад
Let me start out by saying that I appreciate that despite disagreeing with me, you chose to actively engage and explain your point and not sink to the type of 'troll comments' that are all too common on the internet. For that, gotta give you props and for sticking with the video despite it challenging your assumptions! I would like to briefly address the concept of a "strong political bias" here. I didn't really talk about DEI etc in anything but the cultural context that it exists in, nor did I talk about who I am voting for in 2024. I have a formal education in the science of bias, which I am applying here, and a vested interest in human rights/equity as a whole which i don't see as political-- rather, it comes from my values that apply to my life and choices beyond what we consider as "politics". on your point re: the market research gamer stats-- I am of the opinion that any game is a "game" and anyone who plays games is a "gamer", but that's my own personal opinion/definition. I think it is a bit shortsighted however to dismiss mobile gaming entirely as a genre-- given how widespread it is (especially outside of the US) and how sophisticated smart phones have become, it does a disservice to ignore mobile gaming bc it ISN'T just match3s like Candy Crush-- even if mobile gaming isn't my first choice. Would I play Assassin's Creed on my smartphone? No. I have a gaming PC and several consoles, and my smartphone purposefully is not a gaming tool but a communication, social media, and reading one (fun fact- I actually don't play ANY mobile games aside from Pokemon Go to motivate me to touch grass.) But someone in Asia, etc might, a younger individual in the US might, and there's a whole market of gaming accessories to make that easier and many games we would expect to play on a console or PC now available through Apple Arcade and similar services. It would be really bad practice statistically to cut out that demo in this context. Thanks for sharing and for the like, hopefully this is not too much of a novel of a response! I do intend to make some videos parsing out the mobile gaming attitudes I see both pro and con so I could go on about this forever. :P

Yasuke definitely feels forced on this one. The whole point of Assassin's Creed protagonists is that they were obscured from history for one reason or another, so we aren't even sure they didn't actually exist. That's the beauty of the series. The fact that they are also part of the indigenous population also helps with that. It would be pretty easy for everyone to know who murdered all these people if it was a big, black guy who did it. Pretty easy to track him down. Spider-Man 2 is another one that I didn't really enjoy because im not a big fan of Miles Morales, and he pretty much took over the story. There is no pathos for having Miles fight the Green Goblin because there is no history there. If all Miles gets is Peter's hand me downs then it gives the feeling like I am playing a replacement rather than a unique character.

currently at 6 minute mark. fan of AC series wants more of the series and repeat the story telling methods, by introducing historically named character is stepping away from that, and it's brawl, game also is advertised as historical, and when wrongly depicted causes lot more scrutiny. there'd be lot less Noise about issue if Instead of historically named person, they' have had historically unknown person same as previous games, that character can be anything, if dark skinned and in relative xenophobic society it could be interesting story aspect which affects gameplay, maybe negative as that might be tedious but that's puzzle for Designer to solve. 12minute mark, part of issue is that instead of new franchises we change old franchises we change old stories to fit new perspective, while this has happened historically too even with bibble and people who read old bible are called satanists, today Visual Media is far stronger and less interpretation romm that written and vocal media have. and previously these changed overtime, today it can be perceived happening very very fast. and you are fightining against Nostalgia and Status Quo Bias, and today world of information people get heard and when they don't even as a crowd they get narcistic injury (note you don't have to be narcist to get injured in this manner). didn't really engage with mediation session, being neurodivergent metacognitive and fully lucid dreamer this kind of mediation hasn't produced change, only frustration the longer i mediate as in the retrospective I see it as waste of time which i could've used on more concrete relaxation methods from sleeping, being shower, enjoying good food, having fun etc. breathing exercise is only one i do when i notice I am going haywire in my head, as I my chest fills with air relieving tension and lowering heartbeat. Haven't never done PNS test but few other yes, I think I'd score highly in PNS but I still consider myself as creative person, but with issues translating my imagination into reality. here's what I say on topic of -- does wokeness affect Video games -- my answer is that I perceive Change sake of Change not because betternment of story, does more diversity make story objectively better? not anymore than meaning objectivity has to stories. both side of the arguments are connected by same thing when fixed would reduce polarization on topics, and that's marketing. if Diversity wasn't or lack of Diversity weren't marketable item, there'd be less focus on it and less noise about it.

There is a lot of critisim here, this is always such a heated debate. Anyways, here's some more critisim. - Inclusivity unequals diversity. A room with five black dudes is as divers as a room with five white dudes. There is much more important stuff in regards of the determination if something is diverse or not. And divers in what context. I would argue that, for example, the Kingdom Come Game is going to make the gaming space more divers than the next Dragon Age, although the cast is the literal anti-thesis of everything considered that. Because the historic accuracy, for an RPG, is unmatched, which is way more refreshing than a generic fanatasy RPG with lady knights. -The Black Samurai: I, and honestly we all, don't know if this is going to be an inclusive nightmare or a japanese dreamland, because all we have is some PR Clips. People have to chill out! Nontheless, I think Ubi made a mistake. AC main characters, to this point, were all fictional, but typical for their setting. This is what made AC sucessfull, immersion in a historical setting but creative freedom for the story. The new AC can have problems with both, just by choosing Yasuke. And yes, Yasuke is not a stereotypical samurai (cool), but he is a stereotypical represantion of what forced inclusivity feels like (lame). And the only reason he just feels like that is because they back him, and only him, up with historical facts. People will hate this, they already do. And if Ubi will make AC Hexe, as reaction or not, a classical entry, the AC series will suffer of loosing even more trust in the sincerity of the franchise. -Americanization of media: This is my biggest problem. Becoming america-centric, in pursuit of not being euro-centric. And this is what a lot of inclusivity feels like for me. Middle-Earth but invaded by America, Arielle but in America, feudal Japan, but the MC is western (black this time), so you don't have to understand this alien place, just connect with him instead. And this wouldn't be such aproblem if A): America wouldn't blast their media across the globe to everybody, everywhere and B): it wouldn't happen under the impression of diversity and inclusivity. Because this opens the question: Divers and inclusive in a global sense or in an america intern sense, which could make this, funnily enough, a form of insensitive cultural appropriation. Thats my 3 cents.

I'd be happy to play an assasin's creed game where you play as a warrior of the Zulu empire. They were known to be so fast that the British had to consider them to be mounted on horses at all times. Pretty awesome and you don't have to make up crazy crap and pass it off as real history, like black Cleopatra, black Ann Boleyn, black Issac Newton, or a black samurai (since token black guy wasn't a legal job, he technically was a palace guard, but only ever fought one dual, and lost).

Excellent second half of the video, I'm anti corporate DEI, but I like how you brought in some psychology. I intentionally seek out videos I know I don't agree with, in order to hear them as a person. The issue I have is the first half with the statistics of gamers in that you brought up the stats for who is playing video games and how often they are, but the key piece is what genre they play. Because from statistics that I've seen, guys mostly play shooters and other highly competitive games. Girls usually have played match three types of games. At the time few women have played highly competitive games. Not to day they don't but it's statistically unlikely to see them play those types of games. The other part is looking into the evolution of the culture. Look at the 2003 S.W.A.T. movie. They had a diverse racial cast, but the original 70's show had mostly white men from what I remember, I watched a handful of episodes as a kid. But people didn't trash on S.W.A.T. due to a diverse cast. They trashed on it because it was a bad movie. Samuel L. Jackson essentially made Hondo black. And the 2017 reboot ran with that. I can bring up a few race changes that went unnoticed, but the key is pre-2014, it didn't matter if you created a diverse character. If you did great, you did great. If not, then your work was critiqued. That was a huge generalization of pre-2014 culture, but that's what I noticed. I believe that if AC Shadows came out before diversity was corporatized, then everyone would love Yaskue right off the bat. Because it would have been a new idea. But now in AAA games there's a lot of issues with diversity being almost a requirement to avoid scrutiny from gaming journalists.

Diversity in media is great, i grew up reading Russian,Arabian and European novels with all kinds of diverse stories and characters. Problem with discussing diversity in gaming/stories nowadays is the Tribalism. There are bad actors on both sides of the argument and people protect those bad actors because they agree with their world views. Dropping the comment so hopefully your channel becomes more successful and you do not fall victim to tribalism in the future and realize some people dislike token ugly characters in games because it is literally the same type of fetishization as what those characters supposedly exist to prevent. And some people do not want a bunch of white people developing a game about Japan with a black MC yet they do not even care enough to respect the black character or japanese culture which clearly indicates it is yet another fetishization and not diversity. As for the hair color, looks good but can go brighter IMO.

Diversity in story telling is good but it’s not the ‘diversity’ we talk about in politics that actively makes complex & diverse story telling/characters… you can have a homogenized cast of characters that is extremely diverse and thought provoking on niche issues without using stereotypes/token inclusion just for brownie points. Trying to shoe horn a lesson or outside (personal) narrative into something that doesn’t focus on/need it for the plot/setting, or isn’t an improvement to tropes/ideas already being played with in the storytelling by its inclusion often (if not always) falls flat & feels forced. Creative story telling is best when it’s concise & focused and without clutter. You must allow & encourage your player the ability to dissociate from reality, come to their own conclusions/assumptions/theories, and let them have fun (often just for fun’s sake) in the setting created.

@user-nq2oz8tf2l 22 дня назад
Diversity is fine if it makes sense in the setting. A ranger, a warrior, and a wizard who are wise and middle aged are tasked to save the world? Those dynamics work. A young teenage girl, her token handicapped friend and sacrificial simp guardian? Not so much. Heroes throughout history tend to be the same because that's the template needed to achieve great things.

So I actually wanted to get into this but that would have made the video a million years long. Yes, there can definitely be a “tokenism” vibe to some media representations BUT I don’t think that is the majority and I think a lot of people just see *any diverse character at all* and say they’re “just there to fill a quota” when really the point of the character is flying over their heads bc they have distilled that character down to just “not white, straight, cis man.” I appreciate your kind words. @@emmjaygames I'm not going to give games for example but specifically choose Disney films to compare and contrast. I think it still shows my point. Good example: The Princess and the Frog. Bad example: The Little Mermaid live action remake. Now... Why? It all comes to what "representation" is. Representation to me is more than just skin color, the shape of your eyes, or what is between your legs. It is about the life, the experience. What it is to be one. To be a woman, to be black, to be Asian, etc. With The Princess and the Frog, the makers really do their best to represent what it is to be Black, especially a Black woman. The life of one, the obstacles one would experience, the values that one would cherish. Things that makes one a black woman, not a just woman who happen to have a dark skin, but a person who lives and experience being a black woman. To go along with that, all the details are made to support this. Music, voodoo, social structure, even the food. They have taken the German story and make it Black. The Little Mermaid remake on the other hand. They take what was a White character with White experiences in a White culture, and just replace her with a Black woman. Aside from the skin, nothing there represents anything about being Black. Not the life, not the culture, not the music, not the food, not anything! But somehow it represents Blacks because her skin is dark now. Compare this to how it is done with white characters. Take another Disney example: Frozen. It is Norwegian inspired and look at what they did. The art, the fashion, the landscapes, the architecture, the mythology and creatures. A Norwegian can look at it and see all these Norwegian stuff. But with Blacks? There is no effort like that at all. Just have some dark skin dude and call it a day. Everything is White, or with something like AC: Japanese, with only the skin color doing all the "representation." Might as well make a Snow White remake, a story about a white girl in a white world, but just make her a person of color and still name her Snow White living in a white world... wait. To me it is just lazy and even dismissive. Like, there is nothing special about being Black. It is just skin color. Other races have their music, their culture, their fashions, their martial arts, their architecture, their magic systems, their swords, their everything. You need to deal with all of these to represent them in any sufficient way. But with Blacks; it apparently requires only a dark skin to fully represent them. This is specially a bigger issue in gaming where everything is just crammed in. Not just about being Black, but also about being gay and being a woman and being fat and being ugly and and being disabled and so on. That is just too much to tackle at once and especially to come off as natural, or not feel like tokenism, while also keeping the narrative and game play good and fun. Now add historical element and quickly, diversity and representation just comes off as ridiculous and appear like they are being ridiculed instead. That was really long and I mostly really talk about Black representation, mainly because Black representation is the most lazily done out of all. There is a lot of things more I want to say, but his is already long. I hope that you can understand my take in this issue.
