Fabulous “no frills or hype” update (as always!) anyone watching this content PLEASE PLEASE start investing! My Vanguard ISA portfolio (ETFs & Funds I’ve selected) has gone up considerably (£8k!) and all I’ve invested is 2 years worth of my full ISA allowance (40k) yes it was a struggle to find that money, but so worth it to see the growth…and eventually when I take the money out it’ll be tax free

I love your comment but just on a side note, I wouldn’t sell things or force putting funds into your investment account, only extra funds you wouldn’t miss. I consider any money I invest as spent and GONE, simply for the fact that anything can happen including your money being lost completely by both the economy itself or the banks that hold your funds.

Another great video. I wish this sort of information had been easily available when I started investing in the late 80’s. I’ve done fine but it was definitely a more lonely road in those days and with trading done by phone and at £20 a trade it wasn’t very immediate. Anybody starting today viewing content like yours will certainly do better than I did in the early days. Thanks and long may you continue.

I was in RR at 80p or similar and got out just over 400p but regretted it of course as they went to 480p but I think the upside and downside risk is near balanced. RR's approach to contracts is fine but they will (and have) lost business because of their changes. Are the prices already feeding in data from 2024/25 usage figures or will the flight numbers fall back ? I'd love to have stayed in but with no dividends now and perhaps only 1% to 2% dividends if they restart, you're relying on a 40p+ growth in the share price to get anywhere near 10% per annum and that is rather safely available elsewhere.

Thanks for another great video. I see that you have rebalanced your individual companies. Do you ever consider rebalancing between ETFs and individual companies?When I was in my late 50's I had a 70/30 individual company/ETF split. Now that I'm in my mid 60s I have a 50/50 split and plan to have a 30/70 split by the time I reach 70. My rationale in doing this is that ETFs are less risky than individual companies because of diversification.

Absolutely agree Derek. As time goes buy I'll be buying far more ETFs than individual shares. This should rebalance itself going forward. I don't have plans to sell any individual shares at the moment, I just think most new money will be going into VWRL.

I might be missing something what's the point in holding single stocks when the ETFs also hold those stocks? I get that the concentration increases the income received but the risk increases also.
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Месяц назад
I like to have both. Most of my recent gains have come from buying large caps when they were suffering a brief share price crash. BP and Shell during the pandemic for example. Shell fell to around £8 per share after being around £25 for a prolonged period. When oil recovered, BP and Shell grew so large in the porforlio I had to trim them several times. Rolls Royce fell to around 70p. My 11k invested in Rolls Royce became 50k in a fairly short space of time when it recovered. ETFs are great but I also like the odd bargain too. However as time goes by there will be a general shift towards ETFs. Single shares are not for everyone and I agree they are far more risky.
@khiburgess5848
@khiburgess5848 Месяц назад
@@TheCompoundingInvestor So there isn't a reason as such you just like holding both? No math to back this up perse just a desire? The ETFs afterall hold the same equities and will increase the risk of the overall portfolio all be it if you just held the ETFs that would be the most risk off approach. I'm not afraid of risk but I don't really get it.
@SovereignSaurus
@SovereignSaurus Месяц назад
If you hold an ETF that aims to track the relevant index eg IUSA for the S&P you are owning the best and worst companies in that index. So far this year a handful of companies have pulled the S&P up this year, if you took away those top few companies then the index would have performed less well. By holding individual shares you can own the better quality companies and choose the price you purchase them (eg when they are out of favour) and therefore make better gains than the market overall. On the other hand if you pick the worst companies or buy companies at higher prices that fall out of favour you can underperform Vs the index
@khiburgess5848
@khiburgess5848 Месяц назад
@@SovereignSaurus Yes I am aware of that but the top 8 companies over time change and your ability to predict what they will be in the future is impossible. So you are right but again no one alive knows which those 8 it will be. As the end of the video shows holding a global index warts and all was the better performer. By holding the global index you reduce risk overall and out perform. If you are active investing by holding single company stocks I have no issue with that but what's the rationale behind including the companies etc.
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Месяц назад
In 2009 ETFs were not mainstream and I had not even heard of them until many years later. I grew accustomed to buying large cap U.K. companies. My platform did not allow me to buy overseas individual companies and only changed their policy on this 2 years ago. These days I buy plenty of ETFs and I agree with you most people would do better simply investing in a global tracking ETF or S&P500. I’m simply showing my own journey. My strategy is definitely not the best for sure and in hindsight we can all to better but a strategy which I enjoy and stick to for decades is perhaps better then the best strategy which I get bored with and give up after a few years and squander the money instead.

Really like the videos. Been following for a year or so. However..... I'm curious if we factor in any YT and revenue into this equation. Fundamentally even if you only made £1000 a year in ad revenue. Is that giving a false impression of what you earned and invested. Even if you didn't directly invest. It could also be indirect if you went out for a meal and allocated YT money to pay for said meal. It still leaves the equivalent to invest. My point being! Can you at least once a year do a YT breakdown to give an honest reflection of your lifestyle? I don't really care how much RU-vidrs make. But as you seem like a straightlaced type of person. As your channel grows it would be good to see that your portfolio isn't growing phenomenally because of ad revenue, over what your salary is inputting.
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Месяц назад
Thanks. Yes I do receive some advert revenue since being montised around two years ago but it’s relatively insignificant at the moment. This channel is just a hobby and I only manage around 2 videos a month. I try to use any ad revenue to invest back into the channel e.g. software, equipment, upgrades and subscriptions to services. The relatively small amount of ad revenue currently has a negligible impact on the portfolio or my day to day living expenses but I agree it’s something to bear in mind going forward.

It happened so quickly and I don’t think they told me. I really had to look for the info myself. They didn’t give us much time to find the money either. Definitely would have done better over the last 15 years but ETFs were not mainstream back then and I never even heard of them until many years later. Also my Barclays platform did not allow me to buy individual overseas shares so I grew accustomed to buying UK shares. These days I buy plenty of ETFs for example over the last two years I've put over 30k in the S&P500 alone. Over time index tracking ETFs will be the main focus of new money going in however I don't intend to sell my individual shares as I like regular dividends and find them very motivating getting paid each month. The ultimate goal would be for the dividends each month to exceed my wages. I'm not sure that will happen however but it's a target to aim for. Also most of my recent gains are from buying individual shares in large caps when they suffered a temporary crash e.g. Shell, BP and Rolls Royce during covid. I invested large amounts into those during the pandemic and the gains were spectacular when they recovered. I could not do this if 100% invested in index funds so I like to have both but with more emphasis on ETFs going forward. I think a plan which is suboptimal but you find interesting and stick to for decades is sometimes better than the best plan which you give up after a few years through fear or boredom. It's a good question you asked however.

@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Месяц назад
When I started in 2009 ETFs were not mainstream and I had not even heard of them until many years later. I grew accustomed therefore to buying individual UK stocks. These days I see the benefit of them as you can simply buy and forget and there are so many different types available. I prefer the index tracking ones like ISF (FTSE 100), IUSA (S&P500) and VWRL (All World). Far less risky just buying an ETF and adding to it over several decades if you can tolerate the boredom and dullness of it you would probably do well. VWRL is a very popular one. I also like to have some individual stocks to snap up bargains when they emerge. BP, Shell and Rolls Royce have generated big gains for me when I bought heavily during the pandemic and they recovered strongly. I still think for most people however a global tracking ETF is probably the way to go if you just want to buy and forget.

I also held INRG (for solar) which i rode up and then down again got out ata 20% profit. Now i hold 50% indexes (HMWO which is similar to VWRL I think) 50% separate shares Also have you looked at moving your assets to a cheaper platform?
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Месяц назад
In 2009 when I started ETFs were not mainstream and I only heard about them many years later. Also I could not buy overseas individual companies on my Barclays platform. They only changed this policy 2 years ago. I therefore grew accustomed to buying U.K. stocks. I definitely would have done better with an index fund yes but I might have found it a bit dull and may have given up after a few years. I find dividends really motivating. Sometimes a sub par strategy which you find motivating and can stick at for decades is better than the most profitable one which you give up after a few years. I agree that most people would do better with just a low cost ETF like VWRL or the S&P500. To answer your other question the simple fact is I’m a bit worried something would go wrong with the transfer of large sums especially where ISAs are concerned. I know Barclays are expensive but they have many decades of experience and good customer service and don’t lend your shares out to third parties like some other platforms do.

I've been through quite a few market falls which can be scary for a lot of investors. Share prices can be very volatile which can be stressful for some but dividends per month seem to consistently go up which is motivating as you can see progress more easily. Having said this however, most people would do better by just investing in a low cost ETF such as an All World ETF or S&P500 and not worry about dividends at all.
