To divide an angle into two equal parts (bisect an angle), follow these steps:
1. Draw the Angle: Start by drawing the angle you want to bisect. Label the vertex as point Oand the points where the rays intersect the angle as A and B.
2. Set the Compass Width: Place the compass point on the vertex O and set the compass to a convenient width. The width should be less than the length of the rays.
3. Draw an Arc: With the compass set, draw an arc that intersects both rays of the angle. Label the points where the arc intersects the rays as C and D.
4. Set the Compass Width Again: Without changing the compass width, place the compass point on C and draw another small arc inside the angle.
5. Repeat from the Other Point: Now, place the compass point on D and draw another arc, making sure it intersects the arc drawn from C. Label the intersection point of these two arcs as E.
6. Draw the Bisector: Finally, use a ruler to draw a straight line from the vertex O through the intersection point E. This line OE is the angle bisector, dividing the original angle into two equal parts.
