Great tutorial! I used this vid to separate my supermarket basil plant into different pots, watered them and left them outside in the sun (currently having a super sweltering Southern US heat wave, so I can get away with it.) and they seem to be doing well so far! I was scared of messing something up when repotting but it seemed to have turned out ok. To other beginner gardeners: You can do this! It's easier than you think!

Glad you gave it a go and it worked - well done!

Love this idea! I once bought some grocery store pots of herbs and kept them underneath a grow light in winter....to not much avail. They did last a while, but they didn't grow much. I like this idea!
@JanesGrowingGarden

Give it a go - anything we can do to make them last a little bit longer ultimately saves us money! Thanks Michele.

Thanx Jane. Not to mention they are cheaper than buying in a garden centre. Over here anyways Ontario Canada 🐝
@JanesGrowingGarden
@JanesGrowingGarden 3 года назад
Absolutely. I must say though the ones you get at the garden centre aren't forced in the same way and will hopefully last a lot longer. But for that you pay the price!

It's a good idea this Jane. It means you get more value of money from it doing what you have done.

The actual pot cost 49p so if I can get four more plants for that price I'll be happy! Thanks David.

I can't grow Basil for toffee so will definitely be following your technique. 😀

I'm usually the same - but this way there's nothing to lose! Let me know how you get on!

basil is one of those that will grow easily from cuttings, as well. Just pop them into water, and they'll soon start growing roots. Then pot up the new plants.
@JanesGrowingGarden
@JanesGrowingGarden 3 года назад
Yes I've tried that as well - in fact that would have been good to do with the tops I chopped off but, too late, they were added to last night's stir fry! The more basil the better!

Great video, I made a very similar video to this when my channel was pretty new and for some reason last year it went mini viral and it is so embarrasing! I bet they are grown in peat as well...

I know - it's a first! Oh now we often plant up the living lettuce - they can last a long time that way - well worth it! Thanks Chris.

I totally do this 🤣 And even at the garden center I tend to buy the pots with many healthy plants in them so that I can separate them (and give them a chance to actually survive and thrive separately LOL) I did it today with some hyssop (I now have six pots instead of one) and have lovage, bay, and comfrey still to do. Should have done a video but you were faster. Great topic!
@JanesGrowingGarden
@JanesGrowingGarden 3 года назад
It's such an easy trick isn't it?! And so rewarding when you see how much these plants would cost you at the garden centre. Thanks Rebekka.

Do you just tear the roots that are wrapping around the soil?
@JanesGrowingGarden
@JanesGrowingGarden 10 месяцев назад
Mostly you can just tease them apart but don't worry if some tear - they will soon recover!

That is a great idea. I'm wondering what supermarkets do this? Whenever I order any fresh herbs online I only ever get the tops. Perhaps you can enlighten me. Anyway 'Every little helps'

@JanesGrowingGarden 3 года назад
Not sure about online deliveries Steve but I've seen the pots in pretty much all of the major stores - keep 'em peeled!

I've just found out that Asda sell 'potted' herbs online so I'll be getting some of those and trying your method.

Maybe try it with a few different herbs - chives and mint are a lot easier. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
