Diving Crystal Caves in Abaco Bahamas

One of the most magical places under earth is hidden deep underground. The Crystal Caves of Abaco Bahamas have left me almost breathless since the first time I got to see them in 2011. I’ve been for several documentaries but never on my own to shoot these stunning caves for fun. Anyone who’s dived with Brian Kakuk knows how he strives to protect this fragile environment and for good reason. The delicate crystals in places can never be replaced if broken. Following him is almost as mesmerizing as the cave. Watching him effortlessly glide through narrow passageways and twist and turn around fragile decorations is both incredible and terrifying knowing I have a camera and have to do the same maneuver behind him. The water is gin clear it’s like flying through air in a maze of tunnels. I had such fun with Brian and Rick Witter diving this trip. The video clips are in no order. They were mostly unplanned and just trying to capture a few shots that will never do the cave justice because when you see it in person it can bring tears to your eyes. Mother nature outdid herself here. The shades of red, orange, yellow and pink from the Saharan dust inside the crystals, crystal pools, crystal roses, frozen rain, 12,000 year old bat skeletons entombed in the crystal, ribbons that are almost translucent and so much more. I can’t wait to return but until then enjoy just a small teaser from both Dans and Ralphs Caves in Abaco.

I've dived those caves many times with Brian and completely agree with you that they are truly magical. While video can never match the experience of floating weightlessly thru that crystalline universe, yours comes closer than any I've ever seen. Thank you.

Incredibile amazing video!! Can you please share additional technical details of your dive? Maximum depth, duration of deco stop, total duration of the dive, water temperature… Anyway definitely one of the best videos of cave diving!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🔝🔝🔝

Absolutely, the dives are all guided by Brian Kakuk / Bahamas Underground. The depths vary from 40-150 feet but your average depth is around 70 feet. Sometimes we'll do a 2 hour long dive and there is no decompression and other 2 hour long dives can have less than 30 minutes of decompression. Those are our typical dives. We were diving sidemount rebreathers but you can do longer dives on OC sidemount as well. The water temps are around 68f and there is a halocline in the cave around 40-45 feet. You can go year round and I highly recommend the caves here. My video doesn't begin to do them justice. The way they sparkle can never be caught on camera. The crystlas are so stunning.

Came here from your Eagles Nest vid via Mr Ballen’s vid on the father and son who passed there. As an open water diver, Eagles Nest wouldn’t be worth the trouble for me but THIS is beautiful and something I would actually take the time to train for. Thank you for a beautiful tour of this amazing underwater system. Looked like a tight squeeze some places but absolutely worth it!

Thank you and caves are beautiful places but can be dangerous obviously. Proper training is so important and then building experience after that. We also care for the safety of the cave environment. Those crystals you see can not be replaced if broken so its important to be careful. When you're ready to do cavern and cave training there are a lot of wonderful instructors in Northern FLorida, Mexico and Bahamas.

That was some superb footage and also great diving! Amazing level of control to avoid all these beautiful fragile structures. The oxygen stage bottles are just something goes wrong with your CCR and you have to decompress on OC, correct? Because normally you could just flush your cycle with oxygen to breathe 100% O2?
@BeckyKaganSchott
@BeckyKaganSchott Год назад
Thank you very much! You are on the right track with the bailout bottles. We carry additional "gas" with us in case there is a full rebreather failure. the "gas" will be a mixture depending on the depths we are going to and distance into the cave determines how much. We don't use 100% Oxygen except at 20ft. Below that it can become toxic and send a diver into convulsions. It's usually a nitrox or timix mixutre. On these dives it was around 27% because our deepest depth was about 145ft. We train to deal with issues when the arise on the rebreather and you are correct that you can flush the entire loop (with diluent or air) but if there is an oxygen leak or it's flooding that won't help you. It may buy you time to get to bailout.
