L'isola di Pianosa, è un'isola situata nel mar Tirreno, che fa parte dell'Arcipelago Toscano. Area marina protetta, Pianosa, tra le isole dell'Arcipelago Toscano, è quella più vicina all'Isola d'Elba e fa parte del Comune di Campo nell'Elba.
Deve il suo nome Pianosa, alla caratteristica che più la contraddistingue, avere un territorio quasi totalmente pianeggiante. La sua maggiore elevazione infatti raggiunge solo 29 metri slm.
Le rocce sono di origine sedimentaria e alternano tratti di costa rocciosa a tratti sabbiosi.
L'esistenza fino al 1997 del carcere di massima sicurezza, rendeva l'isola praticamente inaccessibile e ciò ha permesso di mantenere inalterato gran parte del patrimonio naturale dell'isola, interessato anche da coltivazioni agricole condotte dai reclusi della struttura carceraria.

I fondali marini intorno all'isola sono certo tra i più ricchi e incontaminati, da una parte grazie alla protezione dalla pesca per la presenza del carcere, ma anche grazie alla particolare morfologia di Pianosa che rende le acque poche profonde, habitat ideale per le praterie di Posidonia e per le numerose specie che qui trovano riparo: salpe, dentici, triglie, saraghi, aragoste, ricciole e cernie o che scelgono il basso fondale per la riproduzione, come la granseola.
A largo di Pianosa è possibile avvistare i delfini, mentre sempre più rari sono gli incontri con la tartaruga Caretta Caretta o, come nel resto dell'Arcipelago Toscano, della foca monaca.

The seabed around the island is certainly among the richest and most uncontaminated, on the one hand thanks to the protection from fishing due to the presence of the prison, but also thanks to the particular morphology of Pianosa which makes the waters not very deep, an ideal habitat for the prairies. of Posidonia and for the numerous species that find shelter here: salpe, snapper, mullet, bream, lobster, amberjack and grouper or that choose the shallow seabed for reproduction, such as spider crab.
Dolphins can be seen off the coast of Pianosa, while encounters with the Caretta Caretta turtle or, as in the rest of the Tuscan Archipelago, the monk seal are increasingly rare.
