Red Bull Cliff Diving couple Carlson and Heslop claim victory in Montreal 🇨🇦
Carlson, who had opened up this season with victory in Athens before seeing her rival Rhiannan Iffland reel off four wins in a row, was imperious from start to finish as she ripped dive after dive into the St. Lawrence River. Stepping up last in the final round, the 25-year-old held her nerve under huge pressure to execute the best dive of the weekend, an Inward 3 Somersaults ½ Twist Tuck which earned her a score of 10 from one judge and more importantly a dream victory.
“I’ve never cried so hard before and after a dive. I honestly think my goal of four dives out of four dives being good came true because of the atmosphere and the energy. It was almost as if they took over my body and it just happened naturally. It was so special and a moment I’ll never forget,” said Carlson, who not only achieved a season’s best score on home soil, but also overtook Lysanne Richard as the most successful Canadian cliff diver of all time with this win.
A bonus championship point for that stunning final dive ultimately edges the Canadian five points closer to runner-up Iffland in the fight for the King Kahekili Trophy. Despite the seven-time champion from Australia not being at her explosive best in Montreal, she still holds a 19-point lead over Carlson in the overall standings and can wrap up an eighth title with victory at the next stop.
Kaylea Arnett of the USA completed the women’s podium in Canada, picking up where she left off after missing the previous two stops through injury. The 31-year-old wildcard now has a third-place finish to add to her two runner-spots in Boston and Polignano a Mare, lifting her ahead of Dutch diver Ginni Van Katwijk into third place overall.
Heslop, meanwhile, surged to victory following a weather delay for the men on the final day. Having watched his girlfriend Carlson claim glory from the 21m platform, he and the 11 other male divers had to endure a nervous 45-minute delay as clouds gathered and the threat of thunder loomed over the majestic Grand Quay.
But the Brit strode out onto the 27m and launched into a stunning Forward 4 Somersaults 3½ Twists Pike, earning 9.0 scores from the judges and piling the pressure on Romania’s Constantin Popovici, who could not find a fitting reply with the final dive of the day and had to settle for second place.
