The name Pulau Hantu literally means "Ghost Island" in Malay. Hantu is located to the south of the main island of Singapore, off the Straits of Singapore. Pulau Hantu is actually made up of two islets: Pulau Hantu Besar (Big Ghost Island) and Pulau Hantu Kechil (Little Ghost Island). Pulau Hantu was where ancient Malay warriors once had fierce duels to the death and their ghosts are said to wander on the island.
Although visibility can be chronic at times, the reefs are bursting with life including many unique sea creatures. The biodiversity is extremely surprising and the site never ceases to amaze! There is a staggering array of nudibranch and new species to Singapore are discovered on a regular basis.
To list a selection of the sea life you can encounter there: cuttlefish, octopus, sting rays, cat sharks, bamboo sharks, the occasional turtle, toad fish, cat fish, crocodile fish, frog fish, pipe fish, puffer fish, butterfly fish, countless species of nudibranch and flatworm, incredible amount of crab species, shrimp, squid, banded sea snake, carpet eel, and much more!
Hantu has been threatened more recently by industrial development. It would be nothing short of tragic if this unique biodiverse eco system was destroyed and it would be an unimaginable loss to Singapore. We must protect it and promote it so more people understand the value and importance of preserving it. We hope the Singapore government extends the protection given to Sisters Island to Hantu.
I would like to thank Robert Tan for taking the time to guide me around the reefs and share the wonders Hantu has to offer as well as sharing tips on how to overcome the challenging filming conditions. I would also like to thank the crew of Dolphin Explorer who provide such well organised and enjoyable diving trips.

Hi Kenneth, that is awesome! I hope to join you there soon. I am trapped in UK since Christmas and missing Singapore! So I filmed that also with the T6, I normally keep it in aperture mode, as you can still zoom right in. I normally have aperture around 6, but I am still experimenting. The higher aperture will give you a nice darker background and make the colours more vivid. For Macro i used super macro focus. I use lights mostly for macro. If loads of silt move the lights further back so they don't light up the immediate backscatter. For Macro you can also try placing one light directly above the subject, a ft or more above. This helps create a dark background whilst lighting your subject and reducing backscatter. Other important tip is keep the camera as still as possible! Anyway I am far from an expert!!!! See you Hantu soon!

I just came across this today, Absolutely fabulous video with nudibranch species I would associate with Lembeh Straits as well as other key muck diving areas. I dived here back in 1995 but didn't sever much back then, and I think a return trip is necessary.

Thank you Gordon for your very kind comment! Numbers are lower here and visibility lacking, but there is a huge range of species to be found: especially of nudibranch! Have a great day and thanks again!!!

May I know how many dives it took you to film this much diversity? How much light did you bring down to shoot this?
@ChristianBassettNature
@ChristianBassettNature 4 года назад
Hi Elena, it was about 25 dives. I had a lot of left over footage too. Also some of the footage was not usable for various reasons so i had to miss out a lot of great species. Lighting is strange at Pulau Hantu and it took me a while to get use to it. I used one very normal light on the lowest power level (in other places i use two powerful lights on full power). Because of the poor visibility there and sediment in the water, the light does not escape. So low power lighting works best or you overexpose very easily. Hope this helps. Best

Thanks! Great knowing this is all available in my backyard... :) honestly, lembeh seems easier with more diversity and a lot less sediment
