Hello and welcome to the beginning of Season 2 of Gameumentary! If you hadn't heard, we've signed a deal with Enthusiast Gaming to produce documentaries for the next two years, and this project is the first from that deal. We put a lot of work into making this documentary our best yet. We tuned up our storytelling, added in a completely original soundtrack and more! We really hope you enjoy it! If you'd like to support us, we do have a Patreon campaign that acts a bit like a tip jar. Oh, and we're not done with Larian after this documentary. We have tons of content left to use and will be releasing a follow-up video later this year that delves into more of the game design aspects of Original Sin and Original Sin 2. Not to mention extended interviews and other stuff as well! We're working on lining up quite a few exciting projects for next year. If you have suggestions of your own we'd love to hear them!

@@Gameumentary That's a tough question. They're such an interesting studio because they are always trying new things and always manage to nail the art and game design. If I had to choose, I'd say your best bet is to focus on the period where they made Mark of the Ninja, then Don't Starve, and if there's time, Invisible Inc.

I guess that you can never assume how stable the situation of a studio or a company is when you're a consumer, that's one of the points I got from this doc. It's strange when I think about it, I never thought that Larian was swimming in money by the time they released the Kickstarter for D:OS but even then I couldn't had imagine that it was so dire for them at that time. Here's to them and for all hard working companies trying to survive each year by doing what they are most passionate about.

Fantastic documentary! As an old time rpg gamer, I have to say that the joy of playing Divinity Original Sin reminds me of the wonder of my youth playing the first D&D Gold Box Game "Pool of Radiance" - which at the time was a marvel to behold. I have a deep respect for Swen Vincke and his will to always do a good and ambitious game despite all financial issue etc. Those guys are Larian, are true RPG and video game lover before anything else, and i'm really glad they could do D:OS serie. Even if i discovered Divinity with Ego Draconis, i couldn't finished it... I understood how ambitious that studio is. Now I wish they do another masterpiece like Divinity : Original Sin II (for me the best RPG of the last decade), before trying to go full ambitious again. I mean we all want Larian to create full 3D open world RPG,(something like a Skyrim with 200 mods on release!) that would be more immersive, and cinematic than isometric game. Dream game : -Full 3D open world like Skyrim -'Action' pause strategic combat like DA:O -Combat based on team of different characters like D:OS -Writing and quest like D:OS -Cinematic and narrative moment like TW3

another reason today those games have a bigger audience is... because of all of us that grow up in the 80 and 90 playing old games but didn't had the money when we where teenagers to buy them all and more... now arround our 30s we have a job and an income that allows us to spend more money. and the educated population on earth unfortunately is not getting larger ! younger generations playing bs fps games milking a franchise... they are less and less every year and even they get tired and smarter over time.

My first Larian game was actually Dragon Commander. It took me likes 10 attempts to like this game, because it was very difficult and complex, controlling the dragon (so many buttons!) while still controlling your army, while not knowing what unit is good against what. But after many attemps the game really grew on me, I still have it installed and sometimes play through the campaign again. It had and has many flaws and it could have been better, but it was a really fresh and new game and still is, thats why it was always fun in the end. Maybe some day they will make a sequel :) But ofc the Original sin games are just diamonds, so they will probably keep focusing on that :D

still remember when D:OS first release, what really sold me is the cover really i don't read the review and watch videos etc like is just blind buy it, ive played Divinity before, i was expecting to be the same more or less game that for refresher for other bigger game i playing that time, then i play the game, go to character creation, then from there im starting to enjoy this game already like wow even before im start the game its already deep, then i hit play, go to the gate (the first combat) and i just okay im finishing the game. so i messed up my first playthrough then start another, then i just realize this game is have so many choices even from the start. time flies, the Enhanced Edition release, i play again, and it just really getting more better than ever, they fix the bugs, adding more stuff and new weapon, the wands, yes, finally, they listen to the community, everything is enhanced. not sure if im finished it 100%, so many content, exploration is fun, crafting is fun, story was amazing even thou the quest journal is kinda weird for the first time and different from usual quest game. and until now im still playing D:OS 2 with the definitive edition because its free update and i can modded it the way i wanna to.

By the time we realized it wouldn't fix itself we were 15 hours in. In frustration finally sent email to Larian on a Friday evening not expecting a response till Monday. Support team replied in 30 mins. Couldn't fix it but they used dev console and "killed" Bellagrette the NPC. Proceeded to do this 7 more times till we finished my first play through. Even happier I had bought both Original Sin games at full price after this doc, these guys deserved the money. Really wish you guys were more popular though, the trash games I see people throwing money to boggles my mind. Jim Sterling did a good video on the Big AAA studios treating people like shit. They have all the money in the world and still force people to work on these games that are rushed and pushed out early by the publisher. Makes you feel a little more for the indie devs, who wont put out a rushed unpolished game like Larian. With pennies in their pocket compared to an EA, Konami or Ubisoft. They don't stick their games with a bunch of nonsense microtransactions. They don't put out a 100 DLC packages at 5 or 10 bucks each. I really admire this company, keep doing what your doing Larian, and I'll keep buying :)

I agree with you (I have even bought the game thrice, for PS4, Switch, and Steam). But I don not agree with "the trash games I see people throwing money" part because that's more subjective, and depends more of what you like or not. Even if for a majority of people a game is not that "good", if that individual person enjoys it, then it's not really throwing money at at trash game. Not everyone likes the same things. Don't be so self centered.

I mean obviously Witcher and Divinity were released on consoles too, but the design sensibilities never were compromised in the "make it dumber and streamlined" way that US RPGs were. These sensibilities were conserved game to game for both Larian and CDPR, and in this generation that paid off because the trend swung back to more complex, less hand-holdy, unapologetic-ally difficult games

Bloody good game. Only just started playing it and coming from a faster pace diablo background. I actually enjoy divinity original sin a lot. A difficult game. But a fun game. I really enjoy it. Props.

I didn't expect them to be so honest and real about the struggles they went through and the weaknesses of their earlier games. This was an pretty interesting watch for a fan of their modern games.

Came across this documentary after getting into Baldurs Gate 3 Early access and wanting to know more about their journey. Im just getting started on my game dev journey...but the more I learn about Larian the more I want to model my own business practices after them. Obviously they took the hard road more often than not and almost folded because of it...multiple times...yes I highly admire that they stuck to their principles and morals throughout their journey. Ive studied alot of game devs and Larian more or less on their own made exactly the right decisions time and time and time and again. Its truly impressive how they were able to know when to be work for hire and when to stick to IP's that they are passionate about making...and that still shines through to this day. Swen and his crew are absolutely the pinnacle of how to handle the worst that a game dev company can face and still come out on top. Kudos to you Larian! you are one of the few companies that is doing it RIGHT Edit: Especially wholesome to hear Swen at the end saying how he would like to make an amazing game that absolutely knocks things out of the park after Divinity 2...and here we are...2023 you got your wish Swen! Congrats!

To make a very big RPG to dwarf them all, I think he is getting his wish with Baldurs Gate 3. Good luck, as a BG fan, I can’t wait to see his dream come to life.

I first encountered Larian Studios through "Divinity II: Dragon knight saga" because I was looking for a hack and slash game to fill my Witcher 2 playthrough hole. Despite the subpar reviews I decided to torrent the game just to see if it filled the void. What I found was a janky game that oozed passion. I ended up finishing it and it fell out of my mind for a long time. Then comes along a small Dev vlog for Divinity: original sin. I was curious to see if it was the same silly centurion hat with plunger dev that oozed passion and what I got was what I wanted. They way Sven's passion oozed through the video of all the small things the team was doing hyped me up. I followed the Dev logs and was encouraged to support the kickstarter grabbing a copy for me and my friend. The small act 1 shenanigans we got up to are now a core memory forever in my head. The first time we met crabs, the first time we rock, paper, scissored the fate of the Clam, Watching My friend turn into a bush to rob the town blind while I hired Jahan (who ended up stunning our party more times then I can count), the time I found you could go past 100% with resistance and heal while my friend sat around jealous of me. Larian is now my #1 spot on my favorite developers list and I continue to support buying their games. The passion and love they hold for their games is amazing and I hope they have continued success. They are what I wish all game developers were.

I have a friend who doesn't play games but everytime she knew I was playing DOS2 she would ask me what happened story-wise. Did Ifan fulfill his contract? Did Sebille get her vengeance? Does Fane know? Lohse is free now? In the end she came to love a game she never played and cared for characters she had only heard of. That's powerful story telling, right there.
