tarickwilson I should have addressed that. It's less of an exhaust leak and more of a muffler bypass. If you were to do this after your headers, that would sound like an exhaust leak. On my car atleast, it does not sound like an exhaust leak.
And this is by no means an alternative to buying an exhaust. This is just for the people who want a louder car without breaking the bank. If you have the money for a real exhaust, I would buy one!

This is so hilarious! Sadly it's the same kinda of thing I would have done at his age. We all age out of this mindset and stage of life (most of us do) but it's always there for the next generation to take our place. I love it! Ok he did create an exhaust leak but nothing bad is happening all a Muffler does is muffle the sound and it actually restricts power because it forces the air coming out of you exhaust to travel in many zigzags and random air holes navigating it to the exhaust tips so he probably might have gained like a 1 hp or not even close but he did make his car sound a bit nicer and all you have to do is remove the spacers if you get bored of the noise
For 20 bucks (not counting my welder) I did a proper muffler delete on my RX-8. It still has resonator and cat, but with the muffler removed and just a pipe running out one side of the bumper, it sounds amazing. Plenty of loud noise, cracks, and pops to make a huge difference in how much fun it is to drive. It's quite true that you don't have to spend much money to get an awesome exhaust sound.
you don't get a check engine light because that would only come on f you had disconnected your O2 sensor or removed your catalytic convertor since the only thing your exhaust is checked for is how much oxygen is left if you have an o2 and or how much oxygen and fuel is left if you have a air/fuel sensor and how efficient your catalytic converter is. as for performance you took restriction away from the exhaust so if anything you increased performance and you probably won't suffocate because that joint is so far back on the exhaust it was almost at the very back of the car where it would of exited anyways
ironsaber2 . no increase in performance. all new cars are controlled by an ecu . it will adjust and compensate . readjust itself for gas ratio. air intake. bla bla bla. same goes for faggets that think putting a intake on a car makes u gain 15hp. ypur all stupud and wasting time. your better off getting a new programmable ecu and keeping stock options that manufactuers have took the time to perfect. .... id just disconnect it like everyone else said. get a electric butterfly valve on a y pipe. 150 bucks. dont do stupid shit like this.
Please just don't. Modern ECUs are able to adjust for bolt on upgrades and make use of them. The power gains from an intake vary based on how restrictive the factory one was and if the car is forced induction or not.
Yes I know I could potentially lose performance, mpg and I will die in a week from carbon monoxide poisoning. 1. I didn't notice ANY hp loss and if I cared I would just buy an exhaust, but that's besides the point. 2. I still pull a steady 25mpg and even "real" exhausts cause a loss of mpg. 3. The location of my muffler on my 350z is in the very rear so there is a very low chance of any exhaust gasses getting in the cabin. 4. IF YOUR BUTT IS STILL HURT THEN DONT DO THIS TO YOUR CAR I'm not forcing you to do it lol, go spend $500 on an exhaust den
Aside from potential carbon monoxide poisoning, I doubt you'd lose any power or lower your mpg since you're just essentially cutting the exhaust system right before it gets to the mufflers, and mufflers really do only one thing; to MUFFLE the sound of the exhaust. It's the catalytic converters that really do the job of cleaning the fumes.
You could potentially lose your life too, when your neighbour has had a night shift at some physically demanding job and you make black donuts with your loudbanger just for the sheer enjoyment of harassing people and said neighbour drives over you with his Excursion.
I just wanna say, that "YES" this is really just an exhaust leak.. That part is just plain and simple, all your doing is allowing exhaust gas to escape going though the rear muffler. As he stated, it is not to be done in place of a performance exhust system. That would require more than just work to the rear muffler/s. However, there is merit in this still. An older project car that I was working with was my Toyota Soarer GT, or LC400 for the US. And it was a very quiet car. Just for fun, I did end up removing the rear mufflers (I removed them totally because I didn't see the point in having them there if their not in use). And if all you care about is sound, then yes. It actualy sounded like a V8 and to be honest it sounded pretty good. I do not recommend doing this to a car that you actualy would like to see gains out of or for a daily driver. If you realllllly want to do this for the sound aspect, just ask your local exhaust shop to make you some straight pipes that bolt up to your factory flange there. Remove your mufflers and direct that unfiltered sound where it should be, away and behind the car. Plus, you can have some Fat Ass tips installed on there too to really sell the "Performance" mod ;) If this was done on a daily, I can only imagine the possibly of issues arising from this, one of few water getting down there.
Try that on a Swedish car where everything has rusted to a stuck position. Cold, warm, wet, freezing, salt, snow, slush, gravel and mix everything every day for several months a year. It affects metals and other materials quite a lot (understatement).
I have this done on my 01 suburban, the location is right about mid vehicle and after doing a Co test all was good after 30 mns of running in one place. it's all good.
as long as the "exhaust leak" ...i like to think of it like a "muffler delete"... as long as hot air is not getting sucked into the intake, its all goood.. backpressure is a myth
I have enough of you stupid people telling this is a exhaust leak, or that it's dumb. Your daddy may buy you a brand new exhaust,but he explains how to do it without spending any money,for example you just buy a 200 $ car, just to go to work,or move for small spaces,and want to have fun with it. God, if buying an exhaust is your solution,then send me the money,so I can buy a new exhaust. Most of you don't even have a car.
All you have to do is take off your mufflers at the joints you call em which are clamps and run aka straight pipe or you could take off you Cadillac converter and it also gives you a little louder sound but taken off your mufflers is 4th best way to go
nice , i did the mod on a 2.0 tiburon , sounds great, the exhaust joint coinsideds with the petrol tank solved with a pise of flat bar sane size than the washer spacers on the tank side. tested it riding hard and it works good freed exhaust pressure car pulls better. car manufactures due to govermental laws over dimention baffeling , this makes the engine brethe with dificulty, same thing with the intake....
That's a nice 350z soon I'll own one by the time I get one they'll be cheaper to buy like 7-5 grand the race track ready model is rare only a few were made but it's the race model with more aggressive performance compared to the other regular 350z outhere
It really doesn't change anything if it's after the cat. The only thing that changes is that the sound is louder and the exhaust gases aren't released out the back of the car.
Jesse Hasch it can cause it if you idle in one spot for like an hour if it's getting in the car and yes less back pressure easier to burn gas less mpg probably not much less though and HP will increase by probably 3 if that
my cousin did this to his g37. never seen it done before, saw it on the lift and called him. told him he has an exhaust leak and he said it was supposed to be like that. scratched me head for awhile and just let him be.
at this point, you could just cut off a catalytic converter, and will get the same sound, or even disconnect the exhaust like he did, but dont put on spacers, and you will still get the same result
I drove a shitty Suzuki sidekick years ago and I remember how cool I was with my 97hp engine when the muffler fell off! Man, the Civic drivers were all "nice exhaust man, sounds sick" and " did you supercharge ?"
