Thanks for the video! Very helpful. One tip for viewers who may be torque-wrench unaware like I was before I tried to make this repair. There's a different between inch pounds and foot pounds. Make sure you get a torque wrench that can do 32 foot pounds, which translates to 384 inch pounds. I had to rent the 1/2" drive torque wrench from AutoZone to make it work. Their 3/8" drive torque wrench was an inch pound wrench and maxed out around 230 inch pounds. God bless.

excellent video! this made changing my alternator so much easier and way less intimidating! I think it would have been helpful to get a slightly closer look at the belt and talk about what to look for when tensioning, but other than that everything was very clear and well shown! Thank you!

I got a question, your tensioner bar started like a full 2 in out and then when you install the new one you only had about an inch of space. I'm doing the same repair today and I started with about an inch of space and now I got about no space is that normal?

How tight should the band be? Mine squeels a bit when I start and gets louder when I accelerate. The sound goes away after. I think I might have tighten it too much
@MobileCarMechanic
@MobileCarMechanic 5 месяцев назад
The deflection of the belt shouldn’t be able to reach 90 degrees! Belt should feel kind of stiff but still be able have some deflection.
@ramsesii5168

@MobileCarMechanic

You will need to make sure the tensioner is tight. Make sure the belt doesn’t feel too loose. You shouldn’t be able to twist the belt to almost 90 degrees.

What do you think about model 2008? I think it could be same. Because model 2008 is also an E140 corolla.
@MobileCarMechanic
@MobileCarMechanic 2 месяца назад
So it appears that the E140 chassis was introduced outside of the US earlier in the international market which is what we ended up getting as a 2009 - 2013 model year. Looks like other parts of the world got it as early as 2006. So this video would apply to your vehicle with that chassis code.
@dogucanozturk5114

@@MobileCarMechanic Thanks for your answer. The model is toyota corolla 2008 E140 1.4 d4d motor. There is a rustling noise when starting my car, the sound cuts out after start. A while ago my car had an oil leak. I think the problem is caused by Alternator. So, I don't know which alternator to buy. Apparently the ones sold in the American market in 2009-2013 will be suitable for me. Or should I ask: how to solve the problem of alternator failure due to oil leakage?
@MobileCarMechanic
@MobileCarMechanic 2 месяца назад
Im not familiar with the engine as its not a US Market engine. When i did a quick search it looked like the alternator has a different connector than the US Market 1.8 Liter Petrol engine. If you have not fixed the oil leak yet make sure to do so to not ruin the replacement alternator, The rustling noise could be a squeak from the belt and could have oil on it. I would try to take the belt off then start the car and see if it goes away. If it goes away then spin all the pulley's by hand to see if there is any noises, if not then probably belt.

how do you know how tight to tension the belt after replacement of alternator?
@MobileCarMechanic
@MobileCarMechanic 10 месяцев назад
You should try turning the belt side to side. It should not move much. If it turns to a 90 degree angle then it’s too loose.

@@MobileCarMechanicwrong, you’re supposed to be able to turn it no more the 90 degrees

Saw suggested on another video- mark the tension bolt with a sharpie before you take off the old alternator.

My belt was soooo much harder to put back on than this video showed. Car is running fine though and i checked the belt layout and its right by boy i had to pry the alternator in place to get the bolt to go in.

Perhaps it could be interesting to add information if the belt should be changed by checking it the good way. Whitch i don’t know how. And use some gloves. Cancer from oil on scratched and are dangerous.
@MobileCarMechanic
@MobileCarMechanic 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the advice, the belt should replaced if you see any cracking on the belt.
@handsomeharold5726
@handsomeharold5726 5 месяцев назад
imo, if you are doing the work to pull out the alt and having to deal with the tensioning anyway, you may as well pull the belt off and replace it if you dont know for certain how old it is. for how inexpensive it is, id say its worth it to be able to do the change with the extra room you have as you go

It wasn’t, I used an aftermarket belt which may not be exact as the Toyota belt. The deflection was too much until I cranked it to the position it was in.

DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I MADE-MARK THE TENSIONER BOLT BEFORE YOU MESS WITH IT!!!! I didn’t and no matter how little or much I tightened it, it would squeak so bad or be to lose. Mark your shit and if it’s an old belt consider replacing it 👍
@MobileCarMechanic
@MobileCarMechanic 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for the tip but maybe the belt is a bit too long! Mine was a bit long which required me to almost max out the tensioner bolt.
