For first time sewers: You don't need a gathering/ruffling foot just gather it with your fingers. Love the colour of the skirt and you did a good job

A gathering/ruffling foot makes life a billion times easier ans aren't expensive. You can also gather on your serger if you have one.

I've bought a few skirts and made some skirts similar to this (having a plus sized figure needs more fabric) for ren faires. LOVED the tips and tricks in this video. I've pinned using the quarter point method (I thought I made it up..lol) for some of my tiered skirts, but pinned all pleating then sewed. Will have to try the pleat and sew method now. Awesome for figuring out how much fabric one needs to make this kind of skirt! Thank you for this video!

Good gracious... I made a ruffled skirt like that attached to the bottom of a tee shirt to make a dress for a 10 year old. It wasn't even floor length, and took most of a twin size jersey bed sheet set, I used a ruffler foot, and it was STILL a humongous PITA. MAJOR props to you for such a beautiful result.

That looks like a very fun skirt to dance with! I like the way you can hold the hem and wave your arms around, yet your ankles stay covered! It gives the illusion of naughtiness while still maintaining modesty. (Of course, what you do with your top is your own business, LOL!)

This is so gorgeous! How many yards of fabric to do this skirt, but for casual wear, not dance wear?
@sparklybelly
@sparklybelly 7 лет назад
For casual wear, probably a 10-yard skirt is enough, 25 yard is way too much for daily wear. In that case, make it 3 tiers - 10 yard for bottom layer, 5 yards for middle, and 2.5 yards for top layer. If you use 45in wide fabric, you'd need about 5-6.5yds depending on your skirt length :)

Nice tutorial, just wanted to add that if you have a serger you don't need a pleater foot (unless you want pleats). On a serger you could use your gathering setting to simply gather the long edge to the same length as the shorter edge then Serge the two together to seal all of the seams.

Very cool tutorial, thank you! I've been wanting to make a skirt like this for years and tried a couple of years ago, but I definitely didn't do it right, the skirt I made looks ok, but it's not nearly as full as this one and I remember getting very frustrated at all the gathering. This version looks so much easier, I can't wait to try it! So thank you again. (also, as someone else mentioned, you really shouldn't use the word gypsy, since it is considered a slur towards Romani people)

How long did it take you to make this skirt (from the very beginning)?
@sparklybelly
@sparklybelly 7 лет назад
Good question! Let's see... all the cutting, making individual tiers and even hemming the 25 yard tier only took me about a couple of hours. Then I spent 2-3 hours the next few days to do the pleating and sewing. So I'd say 10-12 hours. But I was filming and moving the camera, adjusting light etc while I was making it, so the whole project may not take as long ;)

This will be the perfect skirt to make for my younger sister! She has fibromyalgia, which makes it painful for her to wear pants, so dresses and skirts have become her wardrobe. Problem I'd we have horses, and what she has would make it difficult to be able to ride and look ladylike in the process. But the style of this skirt is the solution I was looking for! Question: is there a way to make this a full dress?
@lightningbug3189
@lightningbug3189 4 года назад
I am not sure if you are still lookong for the answer to this, but if you find a bodice pattern you like, I am sure you could attach it to the skirt at the waist band. Many dresses are a skirt jointed to a bodice rather than a continuous piece because it is easier to make that way.
@maiajohnson772
@maiajohnson772 4 года назад
True, but seams at the waistline are now hurting her a lot, so now she's having to wear full dresses made with a two-panel pattern. I thought of it, but I haven't found a way for there to be no seam at the waistline. And it's been a complete guessing game on what fabrics will be comfortable. Those are some of the many problems we've been facing. The fashion industry isn't exactly fibromyalgia-friendly.
@lightningbug3189
@lightningbug3189 4 года назад
@@maiajohnson772 Well, since this is a tiered garment, if a loose fit would be better, maybe something looser like a t-shirt could be attached without the elastic or waist band? Kind of like it is just another tier? I would just remember that a garment like this being fully supported by the shoulders could be heavy. If it is the feeling of a seam rubbing that is painful, maybe felling the seam could help? It is an older technique, but it involves stitching the seam allowance over the top of the seam to conceal the edges. It is done by hand though if you want it to be invisible from the outside.
@lightningbug3189

I love this! I'm super late to this video, but I'm so glad to have found it. I can buy a 25 yd skirt for about $50, depending where I look, but that's still kind of pricey, and it's not unique, and I'm afraid of the dye washing out of them. I also have lots of different cotton fabrics from different projects, many purchased on sale or clearance, plus some sheets that have finally ripped in spots, and I want to mix and match the fabrics together to make a more unique skirt. I'm not a belly dancer, but I've learned the moves and use them for exercise and to help with back pain, and I have always loved the ATS look, and it would be awesome to have a proper skirt to get a feel of the moves. Edit: I just looked at your site, and I'm going to agree with another commenter here, to remove the "Gypsy", which is a slur on the Romani people. If you must use something, perhaps replace it with "Bohemian-style"?
