We have been battling with bad water since we moved to Texas. Our single rv water filter just wasn't cutting it. We were having to change the filter almost monthly! We started to look at multi-stage water filters and ultimately decided to just build our own! The pre made / plug n play versions were selling for over $500. We built our 3 stage water filter for around $200 and custom installed it! Come check it out.
In this video we show two different ways to implement this system. An external plug in to your hose system and an integrated into the RV water line system.
Here's what we bought:
$29 (3) Water filter housing amzn.to/3DCTHge
$10 10 ft 1/2 pex pipe
$60 Brass fittings (various)
$15 10 pack 90 degree pex fittings 1/2 inch
$10 (2) Pex clamps/rings pack of 10
$60 Water filter pack from clear source

01:21 - Let’s start building
05:04 - External version
12:06 - Inline Version
16:25 - Water pump replacement
18:30 - Thank You!

Thanks so much for sharing this alternative! I'm about to add it into my system. A lot of van life DIY systems seem to either be able to afford the $600-1000 ones or just skip it all together and i just couldn't bring myself to do that so i'm super thankful for your creativity and thinking on this as at this point in my build my brains pretty fried hahaha

Nice work, I’ll have to figure out how to do something similar for our Class C! What micron rated filters did you use? Thanks

Get rid of the rubber hose, use only PEX. Pex is not PVC, so you dont need so many fittings.

Where did you find male to male fittings that are drinking water safe? Almost all the ones I can find are for outdoor / garden use (or really expensive)! Thanks

Hey @dpkealy. Simply put clean and tasty, and we’ve been at some places that the water wasn’t the best (sulfur smell, earthy smell etc)!

How did you get the PEX clamp over the end of the flex hose?

Great job on the system. I have been looking for some ideas on building one. Just ordered the canisters. One question. When tightening the brass connections, how much force did you use. Just wondering. I tend to over tighten connections. Mine will be freestanding. We have a Grand Design Solitude rear kitchen and love being full-time it. Blessings to you and your family. Paul Pannell

I used a pretty good amount of force to be honest. Amanda and I each grasping and twisting in opposite directions. The biggest thing I’d make sure to use is plumbing goop and Teflon tape.

I liked your solution and plan to build one myself. One question. I noticed that when you initially attached the water and flushed the system a lot of charcoal dust came out of the 1st filter. I assume it flushed on out of the filter. Now that you have it permanently installed how do you do the initial flush when you change filter cartridges?
@WeLiveFreeRV
@WeLiveFreeRV Год назад
Hey Jim! We honestly should have rinsed the filters with the hose initially before installing! We were just so darn excited to try this out! Moving forward we will rinse the filters prior to installation and hopefully that will prevent that from occurring. Ohh boy I’m going to try and explain this via text if the below doesn’t make sense let me know and I’ll record another video for this comment explaining / showing what we will do if the rinsing method doesn’t work. We will add a brass T to the output side of the filter system. Going left to right on the letter T we will number them 1,2,3. #3 coming from the filter system (right side of the T) . #1 (left side of T) will be plumbed in to the pex lines (like we have now) the only thing I would add would be a pex shutoff valve for when we want to flush the filters . #2 (bottom of T) I would use the 3/4 to 3/4 hose converter, add a hose shutoff, and have a small section of hose ( not permanently connected) that I could run out of the camper when replacing the filters. So we can clear out the charcoal dust. That’s a great question!!! I might jump back in there and do that anyway! Let us know if the above makes any sense at all lol. Very respectfully, Jeff and Amanda

Jeff, I think I followed what you're saying but... I went back to rewatch the initial flush and it looks like the charcoal dust is coming from the middle filter. Seems like that might shorten the life of the downline filter. Maybe you need a flush port on the output side of each cartridge. That way you could flush each new filter separately.

Jim, Another good call out. My only concern would be how long the filter system would be at that point. I truly believe it was more us not initially rinsing the filters. Good luck with building your system. It was a pretty fun project to do.

I flush the charcoal filter with a garden hose before installing it.

This is a great idea so I bought the same cannisters to make a system. I can't get the water to stop leaking from where the cannisters are screwed on despite placing the o-ring in the threads and applying silicone. How did you do it? TIA

I’ve heard plastic not withstanding pressure in many reviews. What is your experience so far?
@WeLiveFreeRV

Good morning, We initially had an issue with a small leak but that was our error with pipe tape. After that no issues from this system. The fittings were all brass to brass. Meaning inside the plastic housing were brass connection points.

i would like to do this with my camper but i dont live in my camper so i was wondering if i put shot off valves on each side so you can close them would that work
@WeLiveFreeRV
@WeLiveFreeRV 5 месяцев назад
Good evening! You absolutely can add shut-off valves. Depending on parts availability you may have to run the shut-off valves to the pex lines vice your filter setup! Good luck!
