Here's another Breja Tone Works DIY video - this time I've combined two of my other mods into 1. This video will show you how to wire your Strat with both the 7-Way Switch (giving you two additional pickup configurations) and the Dual Tone mod (adding a tone control for the bridge). I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you so much for posting it ! This wiring makes much more sense than the standard stratocaster wiring, and the extra tone options with the switch are also great.

Thanks so much for this. I've done 2 guitars this way, using Texas Loco pickups from merry ol' England. Very reasonably priced - happiness is a hot pickup, and this setup gives a vast and accessible tonal range. Thanks again!

I'm going to mod a Squier today with this wiring. If it works out I'm going back to rewire my MIM Strat with Dimarzios. Thanks for making this available. Love the step by step wiring diagrams.

Don... Thank you for the diagrams and explanation. I tried modifying my Squier guitar with new Fender pots and switch. HOWEVER I need to let you know that your diagram did not work for the 7 way switching (assuming you want to engage the neck pickup on positions 4&5). The correct wiring for the toggle switch is: A1 (toggle) to A3 and A2 (toggle) to B2. (FYI I used an SPDT switch instead of the DPDT as shown). Fortunately I printed out your diagram and when it didn't work as it should my buddy told me to try the aforementioned alteration. It now works perfectly. I love having a tone control on my bridge pickup and may now have to go back and rewire my other Strat. Thanks again so much.

Hmmm... Interesting. I'll have to rip my Strat apart to verify but I made the video based off my schematic. Thanks for letting me know and I'll check it out.

Breja ToneWorks Let me know what you find. I was scratching my head, checking to make sure I had it wired to diagram specs. The tech at the guitar store looked at your diagram and made the appropriate changes and when I tried that setup it worked as it should. How do I email you? I can work up the change in Photoshop so you have a more visual reference of what I did.

Did this mod last night. Went well considering I was doing it on a squier affinity strat. Only disappointment is when the toggle is on, the 5 position works in position one and two where I thought it was going to operate in position four and five. No biggie I'll just have to commit it to memory .

Great video, as all of your videos. I already made the master volume/master tone mod and i want to maka the 7 sound mod. Can i use a momentary "push to make" switch usually used for "kill switch"?

As per the finished diagram shown on 5:34 I understand that at position 3 (Middle pickup), if you have the switch pressed you will replicate position 2 (Bridge and Middle). The solution would be get rid of the jumper between b3 and b4, but with the Neck pickup without a tone pot. Am I correct? Thanks

Hey bud, I have a question and I hope you can help me out .. I currently have this mod in my strat . With a push pull at the volume pot . I want to move the push pull pot to the bridge tone knob position , like the current american performer strats. . Would I wire the push pull pot's A1 and A2 connections the same as I have it now? And the rest of the push pull pot like a regular bridge tone pot? Its hard to explain but I hope u kinda understand what I'm asking. . I appreciate all your videos man , they've helped me a lot. I always turn to them when i need a wiring diagram.

Very helpful... Question: I'm doing this very set up only using an Alpha Push Pull volume pot / switch. Do I have to ground one of its top lugs (perhaps #3) like we would do using traditioal pots?

I've now done this mod to two guitars. QUESTION: I recently came into possession of a TBX tone pot. Can the TBX be added to this mix or do I have to wait for another build to utilize it? Do you have a wiring diagram to add it into the 7-way/dual tone? BTW... Learning a lot from your vids. Thanks. Just changed out the .22uF caps on the Dimarzio Areas for .47 and rewired for dual tone. The Dimarzios were way too quacky and bright, especially the bridge. I feel like I have much better control of things now. Thanks again.

Hey don, used I used your strat mod video to add my bridge pickup in so the middle tone works for both bridge and middle. I love the mod, im about to do another build and i saw your video on dual capacitors for a strat... just wondering the differences between these two mods! FYI i will be using HSS pickups configuration. Thanks in advance, and thank you for sharing!
@BrejaToneWorks
@BrejaToneWorks 9 лет назад
sapphirestrat The Dual Cap mod is simply a mod where the Bridge pickup gets its own capacitor and tone knob. The Middle and Neck then share their own Cap and Pot too. This is my favorite and most popular mod since you can mix/match caps if you want. In all of my guitars that have this, I have a .015uF PIO for the Bridge and a .015uF Orange Drop for the Neck/Middle. So - the difference between this mod and that one is that this mod uses only one capacitor shared between the two tone pots. The other mod has independent caps. Happy Modding. Don

Thank you for your response! I just wired it up with a .015 pio for the bridge, and a .022 orangedrop for the mid+neck. Havent assembled the guitar because im in the staining process.. But thanks again for the info! cant wait to try this strat

I've done the 7-way push pull mod on the tone 2. However, how would I wire it so tone 2 controls the BRIDGE and MIDDLE tone together? And tone 1 acts for the neck as usual.
@christopantz
@christopantz 7 лет назад
Just did this mod. The 7 way switch works well. The neck tone now affects both the bridge and neck, which is good. The bridge tone pot is now doing nothing. At one point, it was acting sort of strange and random, but now it does nothing when i turn it. I redid all the solder joints and made sure they were working (although my soldering is not the best). Could it be possible that I tried that pot? any tips?

Hi! Great Videos! I just installed Fishman Fluence P/U's for my Strat. I want to do this mod with a mini-toggle switch; to add the neck in when 5-way is in Bridge/Bridge & Middle positions!? But since the Fluence are powered with a preamp in the bridge pup, i think I would need to have the mini out to the preamp in, without jumpers as this? I'd appreciate if you could add any help for me!? ThanX, Tom

@TommyRocket49 7 лет назад
Yep! Fishman called me back & that's how to do the 7-Way! But he didn't mention using a jumper wire to the A-side common? I just sent him an email about how I did this Dual Cap change, but have no tonal change turning them up or down?? I'm using a 15 & 22 orange drops!? I'd still appreciate any help you could offer?! I wish there was some vid's out on these Fishman Fluence? They sound great!! just would like to have the mod's with them as on my other Strats!

Don, thanks for this vid. I have just followed these instructions and have a couple of unexpected differences. My strat operates normally in all 5 standard positions but my two new tones appear (new switch is ON) in positions 5 and 4 ( not 1 and 2, as in your vid) which suggests to me that my new microswitch actually permanently switches on the bridge pickup - I can live with this, however my second Tone pot has now become a Volume control for my neck pickup! I have checked my wiring repeatedly and cannot see where I have gone wrong. Any ideas? Thanks JT
@Mruppertrinity
@Mruppertrinity 8 лет назад
I've just been thinking further about this. My 5 way selector is a different configuration from what you have here. Rather than having a Left (A) and Right (B) side, the switch has 8 lugs in a straight line - there is no indication of the purpose of each lug and the unit is enclosed so I cannot see how the mechanics of the unit work. I assumed for this project that the lugs run A1 to B4 in a straight line!

Is there a way to bypass the middle pickup tone control? In other words, can I just have tone on the neck and another one for the bridge? I noticed I really like the middle wide open and control the tone on the bridge when they are both in in use. I am curious how it would sound if I combined the neck and middle with the middle wide open.
@BrejaToneWorks
@BrejaToneWorks 9 лет назад
Hey Clay... Easy as pie. Remove the jumper from B3-B4 on the 5-way switch. Make sure you keep the wire to the tone pot coming from B4 and your middle pickup will be completely moved from the tone control. Best of luck... Don

Breja ToneWorks Hey Don. I removed the jumper from B3-B4. My middle is wide open, but the 7 way switch for neck/bridge has been disconnected. I only get neck. I can still get all three on. Where do I go from here?

Im about to build my first Jaguar bass guitar ever. So im really nuby. For this bass im using -pbass pickup, Jazz bridge pickup, -No Volume/tone knobs and no pots at all.just a pushdown killswitch. Is it possible to toggle between elements with the one killswitch. Or would you recommend a different approach. Thkz
@BrejaToneWorks
@BrejaToneWorks 9 лет назад
I'm not quite sure what you're going for with this config... You have no vol, no tone AND no toggle switch - only a killswitch? If I'm being honest with you - this config isn't going to be very conducive to a cool bass. You probably will want to look at adding vol, tone and switch controls unless you have no desire to ever change the volume, tone or pickup. Don
@boogiebouwman1659
@boogiebouwman1659 9 лет назад
Breja ToneWorks That's right every gig I do I use full tone full volume I never turn them down. if I need to change volume or tone I use whatever is in my peddle board. I'm choosing not to use pots cuz a friend of mine told me by adding the pots you will lose a bit of the genuine guitar sound. Not sure if he is right about that.... Kill switch wise I already got told my idea was ridiculous. press kill switch==> activate p-bass pickup press kill switch again ==> activate j-bass pickup press kill switch again ==> activate both pickups press kill switch again ==> KILL SWITCH!!.. Maybe a lot of tapping on that one kill switch... Thkz for the quick response. And sry for the crappie English

Boogie Bouwman While 'technically' every pot will add some resistance to the circuit and affect the signal - we're talk very minimal impact here. I would challenge you to put a pot into a circuit and then take it out and notice any difference in the tone or volume. You'd be doing yourself a huge disservice by not having vol and tone controls merely for the sake of removing this minimal resistance. If you wanted to really try this - StewMac now sells a JackPot that will completely bypass the pot circuit but still allows you to have vol/tone controls when you need it. You might want to check out their site and see if you'd want to go that route. Again - I'm not telling you what you should do cause everyone has something in their head they want to hear - I'm just saying that without those controls, it's gonna be very difficult if not impossible to achieve that sound in your head. I'm looking to do something unusual. Is there a way to do both a 7-way and a blender pot wiring? I want to delete my tone knobs entirely. And just have a volume, a blender, and a switch to either engage the 7-way or to just toggle the blender on and off. Am I the only crazy person who wants this?
@BrejaToneWorks
@BrejaToneWorks 10 лет назад
If you can wait a bit - I have a new video coming out that I'm calling a Stratoblender that might suit you AND keep you tone knobs which I like. :)
@chystorm
@chystorm 10 лет назад
Breja ToneWorks actually I think I figured most of it out. But what i want to do is have a way to kill the blender pot. So I can set the blend with the knob and when I want to kill the blend. I just flick the switch. And when I want it back I flip it back without having to dial in the blend each time during the song. But I don't know how to properly break the circuit with the switch. I'm a total circuit noob.

Hi nick i found by looking at this diagram that you have bridge tone only in the normal mode .With the toggle turned on you end up with master tone because of that green wire from the toggle.If you want the bridge tone available all the time connect the blue wire to the red or tan wire and get the toggle green off of the the other tone pot and go to one of the volume pot feeds .this will give you the bridge tone separate at the time.

Thanks Tom, I did your mod and it’s now working much more how I’d like it. However ideally I’d like to have one tone pot controlling neck and middle and the other controlling bridge. What that mod gives me is a master tone and a bridge tone so in some positions there are still 2 tone pots affecting the bridge. Any idea how it could be wired so that one tone pot only controls neck and middle and the other only bridge?
@jhob101
@jhob101 5 лет назад
Would moving the green wire between 5 way and bridge switch from B4 to A4/B1 and then moving the green back to where it was between B4 and the tone pot do this?

Gero... very weird. I pulled apart both of my strats that have this mod and the wiring I have shown in the video is what I have in the guitars. I checked the output and I did make one mistake. In position three of the switch (and with the pushbutton activated), the sound is the same as position 2 (Bridge/Middle) but otherwise I get all the start 7-way tones. Mine is a CRL 5-Way switch but otherwise all the wiring is the same as what I showed. I have no idea what to tell ya. I'm glad yours worked out for you though. Best of luck and keep rockin'

Breja ToneWorks I found this diagram which seems to be the same as the wiring scheme that I used. www.stratcat.biz/images/dgbs-wiring.jpg I can't help but think there is a switch difference. But I DO appreciate your videos. This one that you posted gave me the confidence to do my first rewire from scratch. It was a tremendous education.
