DIY: 98-00 Ford Ranger Parking Light & Headlight Removal

Video tutorial on how to remove the headlights and parking lights on a Ford Ranger. You will be required to remove the parking/signal lights before removing the headlight and this tutorial does cover that. In this particular tutorial I am working on a 1998 Ford Ranger, but a similar procedure applies to other models as well.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-1/4" drive screwdriver handle
-1/4" 1/4" drive socket
-needle nose pliers
-allen key or a small strong metal rod
Procedure:
-remove the parking and corner light assembly by removing the two 1/4” bolts located between the bumper and orange parking light
-slide down the plastic cover to expose the parking/signal light bracket
-then remove parking light assembly
-disconnect the three light sockets by turning them counter clockwise and pulling them straight out
-for the headlight, there are two clips in behind which we need to removed
-if you have a pair of angled tip needle nose plier, they would make the removal the clips much easier
-here I’ll be using a standard pair of needle nose pliers with an allen key in the end which will fit in the hole so I can disconnect each side of the clip
-do this for each side of the clip
-once done then pull upwards on the clip which will remove it
-disconnect the last pivot point on the side of the headlight housing by using needle nose pliers and depressing the tangs
-pull the clip straight out and you will be able to remove the headlight assembly
-on the rear of the headlight assembly using a flat screwdriver, pop off the electrical connector that goes directly to the headlight bulb
-installation in reverse

OK Just watched another video. Claims to be for 98-11 Rangers. But the 98-00 Ranger is different than the 01-11 Ranger. Parts are different as well. Thanks for the correct video!

Insert a small allen wrench into small hole on side of retainer clip and grab it with pliers. Pry free of clip recess. Same with second hole. Now pull clip up, free from plastic mount.

@Joe Mercker most automotive stores carry these sockets with pigtail wires already attached.. (if I'm reading this correctly) if not, I recommend going to a "pull your own part" type salvage yard and finding the piece you need from a donor vehicle.

What is the procedure for removing the bottom left (from the video's view) retainer completely? I'm putting in new assemblies and can't figure out how to get that out.

Yup, pinch and pry the very difficult to see metal retainer at the back. I bought angled needle nose pliers for this job specifically but I'm not gonna lie, they were a good addition to my work plier collection. You essentially have to crush the small visible clip to get the headlights out right. I believe the pair of replacement HL assemblies I bought had the full clip assembly for re-installing a perfectly new unit where you just pop it back into place (the ball mechanism and funky little 4 edged clip). It's just an angle adjuster for the lamps and it pops out I believe with the same POS Ford light clips (the horseshoe and pinch clips) at the back side. I just snapped all of the metal retainers because they pissed me off with all of the corrosion and bought a cheap, cheap set off Amazon of the exact same thing for replacement.

What is the name of the two clips that you removed from the headlight? Retainer clips?

Adjuster retaining clips or something along those lines. Ford might have some specific name for them.

C-clips, can be removed with c-clip pliers. Squeezes both tension tabs at once makes it a lot easier.

I put the very small allen wrench in the hole with needle nose vice grips and used a big screwdriver to push it sideways pushing it out of the slot....then pull up on the clip and do the other side.

I do not have a video on that unfortunately. I do have a couple fender removal videos which does cover some fender liner removal procedure which are normally quite similar throughout most vehicles. One is for a Subaru and the other a BMW.

Is it necessary to remove the entire assembly to just replace the headlight bulb?

I believe there is enough room behind the headlight to change the bulb, but it's a tight space.

What would be the first thing you would suspect if you had a 98 ford ranger and the lights stopped working. The parking lights work but no headlights. Also do you have any vids on fixing them

Most likely the headlight switch to the left of the steering wheel. Mine burned out twice, I would only replace it with a factory OEM part.

My parking lights were held on with 6mm bolts. (1998 Ford Ranger XLT)

Are you sure they're 6mm? I tried 6mm and it's way too big, and check this out: Then I go down to 5mm and it's too small. It's some kind of hex head bolt that is just slightly less that 6mm in diameter. Or possible this-sized standard type measurement instead of metric.

It's not uncommon for these bolt sizes to vary from year to year, and with these trucks being 20 years old now, there's no telling how many times someone removed them, lost the bolts/screws, and had to improvise with something not OEM.

try a set of snap ring pliers to remove post clips

they would have to be 10" long to reach the inner lower clip. Then you need a set of long needle nose to pull it off the post once you have the ears spread. I just used a screwdriver to spread the ears then pulled them off with piece of metal coat hanger wire bent into a hook. Pain in the A$$ but worked. Great video by the way!

Thanks, but in as much as I'm just changing the headlight bulbs themselves, I discovered it's much easier just to remove the air filter cover and the battery and then both bulbs are easily accessible.

I just did this. It was a royal pain in the ass. I couldn’t get the clips off but I was able to fit my hand around and take the headlight bulb out without taking the headlight assembly out.
