I love your attitude, brother! You're very inspiring for a lot of people. I'm a carpenter and musician, and I'm going to be building my own recording studio at my wife's family's farm in Indiana. Hi just came across your channel and enjoyed the video. I would like to humbly offer some advice. I think you really should put some braces in an angle to support those 6x6s and I would run at least 4 lag bolts through those 4 sandwiched 2x8s. The nail gun nail will just barely reach the 3rd board from either side. Anyway, I like your attitude and enthusiasm. Like I said I enjoyed the video and will be looking forward to seeing more. Hey! I’m really glad you liked the video. All of the beams have GRK structural screws as well as a specific nail pattern to them. Everything is holding up greatly! More videos on the way! 🙏👍

Nice! Still shocked at the size of this thing ! It’s gigantic ! Were you using a metal blade on your reciprocating saw? Was there a reason to use that vs a typical wood blade ? Also, how many hours a week are you currently working on the cabin, would be really curious to know.

I honestly don’t remember. I think I was just looking for a large enough blade that could make a fine cut in one pass. I treat building like an almost full time job at this point.

Great build! I'm doing this myself right now. I'm curious, why did you use epoxy AND a wedge bolt? I've only ever seen people use one or the other. Did you have trouble with the epoxy starting to set before you got your base plate on?

I own a piling house in Florida and I believe the pilings are set 8 feet into the ground. So I am wondering why yours are set on top of cement piers. I feel like if there was a small earthquake its going to fall over, or maybe high wind??? Just curios, maybe I am missing something??

Hey Alan. Thanks for the concern. So, the footings are sitting on a mix of limestone and clay loam with pretty decent load bearing capacity. From there, the 3000 psi concrete footings are 2 x 2 feet deep and 18 - 24 inches high. On top of the concrete footings, the post are bolted to the post base. Hope that clarifies things my man! 👍

How did you come up with how many beams you needed? I'm struggling with our house because I've read that you have to have them 5ft apart but yours seem further apart 😅

Gotcha. So, our posts are spaced out 10 ft apart and the beams are 2x10x10. I spoke with multiple engineers about the foundations design and they gave me the okay. Basically, 4 ply 2x10x10s (our beams) can span for a pretty long way and hold a lot of weight without seeing deflection. It’s probably not a bad idea to call your local engineers to see what’s best. 🙏👍

I'am confused, how are you building your own cabin and saying its going to be an Air B & B. That's illegal. ? You can build your own cabin yes for yourself, but being as you are not a licensed contractor you can not build your own cabin and sell it or rent it out. Now if it is you primary place of residence yes you can sell it but you have to wait 2 years from finished construction. but you defiantly can't rent it out. ?????

@@dusitnwright4443 Yes! That’s the beauty of Texas. Come over here, man. Florida is super strict with building codes and licensing. Texas is one of the most business friendly places. You can build, rent, and sell houses without being licensed. You only need to pull permits and get inspections in big cities. Go Texas!

Nearly every state (if not all) allows someone to build their own house and/or rent it out. The structural requirements must still be met to meet code and may/will require inspections, at certain points during the build, by certified builders who then give their stamp of approval. This still costs money, but far less than having them do the labor. edit- Some parts of the build (i.e. certain septic designs) still require a certified builder due to their complexity and skill/experience needed for install. Depends on your county at that point.
