Just one last thing needed for the M280 system and thats a sound card. Given the vintage of this system the card of choice has to be the classic OPL2 Adlib but rather than splash out on an original or even an original clone I instead bought a DIY Kit from eBay.
This card from AAPro comes with everything you need to build your own Adlib compatible clone sound card so grab your soldering irons and lets see or... hear what it sounds like.

I've spoken to AAPro about several of the issues raised about the card. Presentation of the box for the standard kit. I suggested that the inclusion of a sheet much like that provided with the pro kit would be beneficial to aid people in identifying components. AAPro confirmed they will be doing this at some point in the future. Squared edge vs bevelled / chamfered edge connector. AAPro stated that charges for a bevelled edge connector from their PCB house they use for production of boards would prohibitively increase cost of the cards. Refinished OPL2 YM3812. AAPro stated that cost and availability of "raw" OPL chips would again be prohibitive. All YM3812 chips included in kits are extensively tested to ensure they operate correctly and do not misbehave (don't run hot or use excessive current). C14 capacitor. As already noted during the video AAPro have confirmed this component is not required and will be removed from future revisions. AAPro have been very helpful with any queries I raised responding in a timely manner. I'd also just like to note this is not a paid or sponsored video. I purchased the kits myself.

The chamfer edge could probably be done in seconds with an cheap kitchen electric knife/scissor sharpener. Not even joking, just get the ones with the spinning stone grind stones. The chamfer doesn't need to be substantial, it just needs to be sufficient not to grab onto the connectors.
@Otakunopodcast

Can confirm that with many board houses, you do end up having to pay a significant amount extra to get chamfered edges. For someone ordering in quantity, this does add up rather quickly. The board house I use (JLCPCB) requires you to also opt for ENIG (gold) finish if you want chamfered edges, which adds quite a bit to the cost of the board. The chamfer option is not available unless you select ENIG and "gold fingers." I think a knife sharpener would be a bit too violent for using with PCBs, you don't want to risk ripping a pad or a trace or something, plus it would probably leave rough edges (fiberglass shards can be rather painful, ask me how I know.) I've successfully added chamfered edges myself with just a bit of sandpaper. I used a relatively fine grit, 2000 if memory serves. Tape or staple the sandpaper to a flat surface, to make sure it doesn't start sliding around while you're sanding the card. Then rub the card edge a couple of times against it, holding it at about a 45 degree angle. I use a side to side motion (parallel to the card as opposed to perpendicular) as opposed to a front-to-back motion when sanding the edge of the card. Turn over to the other side and repeat. Be sure and clean the edges before attempting to use it.

People have shown some Adlib clones on RU-vid before, but not this one, I think. I think it's great that the Adlib is so "easy" to replicate. I think your concerns about this one are valid. As for the noise reduction, some computers might have more noise than yours, I'm guessing, but I couldn't tell either. Nice machine, by the way. Really sturdy. :)
@CRG
@CRG 2 года назад
Yes I've seen a few other clones, including some in the shape of the original card. This one I get the impression is done on a budget but its sound quality certainly stands up to any of the other clones I have. Perhaps noise on my machine isn't as bad due to its design with the ISA slots being on a separate backplane. It is built like a tank this old Olivetti. Still need to recap the PSU and I might add an XTIDE since the existing 20MB drive gets filled very quickly.

Not sure if this is commonly known, but I think it kind of fits the topic: Many "modern" 16 bit ISA sound cards can be brought to life in 286 and even in the 8 bit slot of XT class machines using the amazing UNISOUND config tool. That tool seems to have no dependencies on the 386 instruction set.
@CRG
@CRG 2 года назад
I've used an ESS1868F 16bit sound card in a 286 before using its own drivers. I remember Phil showing UNISOUND over on his computer lab channel and I have used it before when working on other systems. Its just such a handy package to get the cards up and running. Good to know it might be successful were original drivers fail though. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I've ordered boards and been caught out by the lack of chamfering. Unfortunately my preferred PCB manufacturer only offers the chamfering option if you order an ENIG (gold plated) board, so it's quite a bit more expensive. It's not prohibitively expensive for an individual project, but it's probably not viable if you're selling the kits at a low margin. On the other hand, the other popular PCB manufacturer does offer chamfering on solder tinned boards, and they don't even charge more so really it's only a few Yankee bucks difference than the other supplier that doesn't do the chamfering. Although I'm not sure what the difference would be for larger board batches than the default 5 boards. And with the re-marked chips, I'm not sure why they do it. It's obviously more work, and from what the vendor has said it sounds like it's more expensive to buy chips that haven't been re-marked. That doesn't make any sense.
@CRG
@CRG 2 года назад
I'd like to see them maybe offer a version with a factory chamfered or bevelled edge although I got the impression the additional cost would make it impractical. As for the refinished chip, the only thing I can think of is that it's a clone chip relabelled Yamaha but I certainly couldn't see any evidence of that so not sure. That said they still aren't expensive from the Chinese resellers so either way I can't help but think they are wasting money time and effort doing it in the first place.
@arnolduk123
@arnolduk123 2 года назад
Why all the upset about un-chamfered edges, the card still fits into the slot and it's not like you need to unplug and plug in and out constantly. Anyway, the ISA slot contacts are chamfered and spring open when the card is inserted so there is no chance of damaging anything. The original Adlib card had un-chamfered edges :) Great video but I think I'd prefer a pre-built one so I know for certain it will work.
@drramtop1576
@drramtop1576 2 года назад
@@CRG Selling boards like this without chamfering is irresponsible. The PCB company I use for my products (JLCPCB) offers chamfering free of charge if you pay for ENIG coating, but that shouldn't be an issue as ENIG is a prerequisite for 'gold fingers' on the edge connector, and every edge connector should be gold plated. HASL/tin plating will wear quickly on repeated insertions, causing reliability problems. I get the feeling the people behind this card don't have much experience designing PCBs for commercial sale. There's a lot of little things you have to worry about that aren't immediately obvious, but make a big difference to the quality and usability of the product.

Was looking for something to watch with my coffee. :) Edit: rounded edges are better, I got a ram slot busted because of a square edge and a VLB slot for that same reason. It's a good idea to round it off. Edit 2: it doesn't sound bad at all, ok +30db ain't great but it's still a nice clone. Thanks!

Yeah despite the few problems with it, it does have a nice sound. I doubt through speakers you'd hear any noise at normal volumes, certainly wouldn't beside this system which between the fan and hdd already makes plenty of its own. The only downside is the square edge connector, sorry to hear you had a slot damaged by one but its evidence to the fact that damage can happen. Coffee sounds like a good idea, think I'll go make myself a cup :)

For the price it's quite a deal when there's really no other option or vintage ISA Adlib cards. Putting together it yourself is half of the fun and really personalizing it. I do however have the impression Samplerate seem to be only 22khz or a little lower... Maybe i'm just spoiled by the clear OPL2 sound of my Soundblaster 16. However it still sounds really good.

I can't hear a difference between the pro and non pro with music playing, but your power is probably a lot cleaner than what we had in the 50s to 90s. (i say 50s, because power companies did and still do use very old transformers.) Once you increased the gain, the difference was pretty noticeable.

I owned a Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amiga (500 & 1200) when I was young. My current PC is a decent Ryzen 5 based gaming PC with an RTX 2080 and 48 gig of RAM (I don't need the RAM for games, but do a lot of work with VMs, which does chew through RAM). My PC can emulate all these platforms easily, and with enough processing power to emulate hundreds of computers based on those platforms at once, yet my PC doesn't engage me as much emotionally as any of those platforms. Perhaps it's because I'm older, and perhaps its just that Windows and Linux haven't really changed that much in terms of usability since the late 90s. Also, I find even top of the range gaming powerhouses, while often having distinctive cases, feel fairly generic in use. If you can use one, you can use another almost exactly the same way. Try going from a C64 to an Amiga. Lots of new bells and whistles to play with. That's not to knock PCs. I love my PC, and when appropriate will look to upgrade it to the best spec I can afford at the time.
@CRG
@CRG 2 года назад
I struggle to see much difference in PCs from about 2004 onwards. Yeah things are better, faster etc but you don't see the leaps at we had from the 80s through the 90s into the early 00s. I find it really hard to keep interest in modern AAA games, its almost like some of them are too complicated for their own good. Maybe I'm just getting old and don't have as much free time but I'd much rather spin up an old DOS pc, much like this Olivetti, and play an old adventure game for an hour even if I know the game inside out.
