I just bought a whole pile of photo paper at a garage sale. My boyfriend was like “what are you possibly going to do with that paper for your journals”? I told him, just you watch, someone will come up with a really cool idea and I’ll be ready. lol That’s exactly what happened. Love these so much. Thanks darling.
@@daniellehaggard7401yeah I'm that Aunt!!! Lol I'm The kind of mom/aunt/friend that purges😂😂. I'm very scared of being diagnosed with cancer and I'm putting off going to Dr to see until my daughter takes her boards this month. After That I will go to find out. But if i do I'm gonna have a craft and art and diy collection that takes up two entire rooms plus storage of supplies, not to mention wood (I'm also a diyer and love making decor or building things) that will have no where to go since my kids aren't into craft or art hobbies. I wanna find some people that are less fortunate but talented that my stuff (so many things brand new in box) can benefit and possibly make their life or their craft/possibly dream career possible! Idk where to even start to ask around if that happens. I don't want the task to have to be in my daughter's shoulders as losing me is her worst fear. I'm only 40 Andi have a plethora of health problems as is. Hence why allot of things are new. I have planners and planner supplies from 7-8 years ago and card stock, all kinds of paint and makers and pens and other mediums. Every glue you could imagine. From prayer crafting to construction grade for diys with wood and stuff. I have boxes of curs of wood in my storage room and shelves of glass vases and containers and decor. Journaling cards and papers and decoupage and clay and jewelry making, ribbon and faux greenery n florals and twine and fabric and tools/power tools, embellishments, ephemera, graphite pencils, oil pastels, watercolor, beads, yarn, spray paint, stamps, inks, mica, vinyl, iron on vinyl, washi tape, tape, notebooks, journals and planners, macrame, clay, moulds, metal wood and plastic blanks for Cricut diy decor. My Cricut which had only been used 4-5 times ever in the 3 years I've had it now. Etc etc etc. If anyone knows a good donation center that would come in and go thru and take away Thad stuff to donate after I'm gone (let's cross fingers I'm wrong. We just lost my mom to cancer not even three years ago and she was only 59. ) But please let me know your suggestions! ?? 🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@babethebuilder1 fenbendazole is an OTC antiparasitic that has been shown to effect cancer cells in lab mice. Take a look at the research. Also waiting won't improve your survival chances. Also, if it's a problem. Just box up what you aren't using in the next year and look into charities that can come and get it should you become to weak or painful to deal with it. I'm not sure what area you are in, so I cannot suggest specifics. Just mark them with what is in them.
If you want to “fix” those drip prints, you can use a small spray bottle to spray alcohol directly onto the finished prints. This will create a very interesting effect when the inks are reactivated and “bloom” where the tiny drops of alcohol hit.
You ALWAYS have the most wonderful Ideas! I do this using old printer cartridges and they work great too. Also I use just regular Dollar tree rubbing alcohol. Then put the 'printer insides' into a jars and leave them forever too. THANK YOU FOR SHARING--You are the BEST!!!
Fun video! On the acetate sheet that was still sticky, try putting some of those transfer foils over the sticky parts and then peel away after rubbing them on. I've gotten some beautiful results that way. It looks like veins of metallic colors running through the colors.
What about doing the clear pocket trick and laminating them so the ink is between the acetate and the lamination pouch? Shouldn't squirt out the ends but you could use parchment paper to be sure. Or try a small section.
Thanks for all the ideas! I have done this in the past, but not for a while. I will pull them out again! I bought a set of new markers to do this so I would have the whole rainbow of colors and put them in dropper bottles. If they dry out, you just add more alcohol. Got tons of photo paper at the thrift store as well. Blowing with a straw creates some nice patterns. You are a great teacher and it's nice that you take us along with your experiments, even if they do not turn out the way you think!
Using alcohol ink on a tracing paper or velum by putting ink into spray bottle. The crunch is fantastic and the paper looks like a stain glass. Very good idea Natasha. I will have to try the squishing method.
What a genius project!! I’m going to give this a go. I think these pieces would make beautiful pockets, belly bands and flip-outs in journals. As always Natasa, you raise the bar for us crafters and bring such fun and joy to all of us! Love & light!
Way to go. I always love making something out of nothing. It's what has attracted me to the junk Journal creating. And I never thought about recycling the cases. But I'm going to look into that too. Great job thank you
Definitely one of those "why didn't I think of that" moments. Thank you Natasha. I've been wanting to get alchohol ink to make vintage tape but don't want to spend a lot. Use what you've got, right. So, I've been using wax paper & distress oxide to make the vintage tape. Now, thanks to you, I'm going to try this out. Thank you so much!💕
I just made myself a set of sprays from gel food colouring. I got 35 spritz bottles from eBay for around £10, and a set of twelve food colours for £3. So.... I have a 2 litre bottle of rubbing alcohol anyway....and I have a bunch of pens that I didn't use and have dried up....AND still have 23 empty spritz bottles! 😜😜😜 Guess what I'm gonna be doing! 😁😁😁 Actually.... I just had a thought....do you even need alcohol for normal felt tip pens??? 🤔 They're water based pens...so hot water should do the trick. You should only need alcohol for permanent markers....just a thought...😘 EDIT*** NATASHA!!!!! I googled methylated spirits as a substitute for rubbing alcohol. Yes they are both alcohols, but rubbing alcohol is pure, methylated spirits is rubbing alcohol (ethanol) mixed with methanol. Methylated spirits is absolutely poisonous, and SHOULD NOT TOUCH THE SKIN!!!! Also two other key things....it CORRODES plastic, and other surfaces, and it DRIES extremely quickly!!! Like, mega fast. This is the methanol doing that. So that is why you need to keep topping up so regularly! Because every time you open it, it evaporates, and so you need more and more. You don't need to do that. You only need to have enough to soak the pen centres in. Chop the pen centres into smaller pieces first, or even better slice of their plastic sleeve so you're just holding the inky felt inside, smoosh those into your jar, pressed down very flat at the bottom, and you only need enough spirits to cover those felt centres to extract the ink. After the ink is leeched, your ink is now a thin liquid, at which point you can now fill the jar with warm water the rest of the way to the top. Firstly, because to use it in this manner it should ALWAYS be diluted, and never touch skin directly. Once the ink is out, it's done it job, so you don't need more of it. You add water to dilute it for safety reasons and Secondly, adding water weakens the methanol, making it closer to rubbing alcohol, and the water therefore stops it evaporating so quickly!!! Meaning you use far far less methylated spirits anyway, making it cheaper, and expose yourself to far less fumes! I hope you read this...☺️☺️☺️
@@poodlegirl55 no I said.....with water based markers, you should be able to get away with using ONLY water to leech the ink out! 😜 In other words....almost free! I think you'd only need alcohol for Sharpie or similar types of permanent markers. 😁
@@poodlegirl55 and I got googling other tips etc....and yes, everyone using water based food colouring, pens, even paints, is only using water for those. They use alcohol for re-inkers, permanent pens, old StaZon ink pads etc, that kind of ink. So I don't think alcohol is necessary to buy, if you only have dried up felt tip pens just use hot water. I just watched mica sprays too....for those, you make the colour you want as above steps, then add a generous pinch of mica powder, two small GLASS beads in the bottom, and then a small squidge of PVA glue. The beads blend the mixture before spraying, the PVA helps the mica stick to the paper instead of just wiping off. If you don't have mica powders just use an old shimmery eyeshadow crumbled up. Not the whole thing of it, but maybe a quarter of the eyeshadow block. Or blusher. Or highlighter. Basically any shimmery powder make up. So you could make two of each colour, one set plain, one set with mica shimmer! 😁
*LOVE* LOL...did you hear me squeal?? There is never a shortage of dried up markers among my stash...I can't wait to put them to use and give this a try. Thank you for sharing! You rock, chickie!!🥰 *HUGS*
I've always called the core of a felt tipped marker a wick, but apparently it's still technically called a reservoir like in a fountain pen. Thanks for the short morning research project and the awesome video. Much love from Maine.
BIG fun!!! I've made these but only used Sharpies--it's great to know any markers can be used. Your frustration with that color wheel is exactly why I created and teach "Get to Know Your Palette" (various ways to make friends with that color wheel) --it doesn't have to be frustrating or confusing. Made me sad to see it get to you "never mind, I'll just make blue"... but thank you for confirming it's a good idea. 🌼
I knew about making alcohol inks this way, but your examples, of what to use them for, made me really want to try making them. Thank you so much for all the inspiration!
amazing colours I use Rubbing alcohol over 70% what you are using is prone to Melt thin plastic which I think that jar is, some of those smaller tubes could be used for your beaded closures you made.
Try using small spray bottles (the kind you might get in a travel kit) and see what kind of patterns you get with spraying and misting the colors onto paper. I do that with watercolors and love the way the colors transfer.
I wasn't liking the technique at first, but I was watching because I enjoy watching you. Then you showed the diecuts, now that caught my attention right away, I loved the flowers! I don't know if you read these, but I would like to tell that I look forward every week to your videos, I like your humor and slightly flippant attitude about things, and you come up with lots of interesting ideas. Thank you for being here!
I love your fails. Eye of the beholder, right? Thanks for posting even those you felt were failures. I'll be saving my spent markers now too. 🤓 I have a bunch of crappy gel pens and alcohol. I think I'll give them a try in the meantime.
It’s a wonderful idea. Great background papers and using up stuff that would otherwise get thrown away makes it totally worthy!!! Your taking the time to develop and share is awesome- thank you.
You could probably use a spray bottle with alcohol and spritz the ones that you don’t like. The ink would reactivate and soften the appearance of the large blobs of ink.
Hi I'm a new subscriber love watching your videos everything you make is so beautiful I came over from NeverHopelessbyElizabeth 👍👍👍👍💐🌼🌹🌺🌸🌻🌷🦋channel love watching her videos thank you for sharing have a Blessed day💜💜💜💜
Those thin markers work well to make Boho Beads. Cut them in 2-3 pieces. Cover in cloth or paper and wrap with wire. I have even seen people use old paperclips for the wrap. The thin markers can be used t create the spine of a book. I am sure you can find tutorials on RU-vid as well. I love that you reduce, reuse and recycle! Have a great day.
I think possibly I may also try using small spray bottles to overspray on papers I'm not real thrilled with to change the look. You are so correct when you said using these inks reminded you of using the gel plates. In fact I have recently viewed some videos that used inks on the gel plate and topped with the acrylic paint so it could be pulled from the gel plate. Thanks for today's inspiration from Northeastern Nevada USA.
I must say I thought at first you where making just the cards but then “BAM 💥” another great project cutting those into cute pieces to add to your stash for future journals & projects! Love them all. Thanks for sharing 🥳💕
IT IS INSANE & AMAZING THAT YOU MADE THOSE WITH HOMEMADE ALCOHOL INKS. I’ve been practicing with store bought ones & neither what I’ve made nor honestly even most of the ones people show online look that good. Yours have such a textural intensity & strong pigmentation amazing. Just be VERY careful messing with methylated spirits; literal poison. I’d wear a respirator even if I’m working outdoors with such toxic stuff. Methylated alcohol, epoxy resin- some things you shouldn’t take any chances with. Also, I will mention since you didn’t mention it- one very good, FAR cheaper alternative to Yupo paper is the white opaque “craft plastic” you can get on Amazon & probably at some arts/crafts or perhaps even fine arts supply stores. As you suspected, Yupo is quite expensive, almost like cotton watercolor paper or something… Whereas you can get 25 big sheets of craft plastics (for small post-card sized sheets I’d cut one of these into 1/4ths, so a pack of 25 can go a long way) for like $8-11… And with 25 sheet packs, even if you use them whole to make BIG compositions it’s a solid deal & will have you stocked up for a while for so cheap. Plus, they’re even more durable than Yupo (probably photo paper as well, being solid plastic the thickness of a notecard), & they wipe completely clean back to white, assuming you don’t use some especially crazy staining color- cleaning off much more effectively than Yupo paper, which means if you make a mistake or create something you don’t like, getting back to a clean sheet to start over is as simple as dumping a little isopropyl alcohol on the sheet & wiping it off almost as smoothly as a dry erase board. Overall I’m very happy with them for alcohol inks (they don’t take gouache or watercolor as well as they claim, but I wouldn’t expect them too anyway- though I am kind of curious to do an acrylic pour on one & see how durable it ends up & whether there are any issues there). Anyway, I’ve been buying up some relatively old alcohol ink markers that are on clearance all the time at Michael’s (like $0.60 for what used to be $5-6 each markers! I couldn’t resist grabbing a bunch), so now I know how I’ll be using those. Most of them still draw, so I’ll use them up a bit more first, but I think I can do more interesting art by making alcohol ink from them if the results are anything like yours. 🤩
Leave it to you to FINDA WAY! I've been saving all my old markers, tincture and spice bpttles for years. Even have a huge supply of Alcohol since Covid...Can't wait to try this!
Love this ideas. I've made from food color and just got some hobby lobby haul. I took what I made and put in spray bottles gonna try using on photo paper now thank for the idea.
‘Not only I am hopeless with colors, I am hopeless with color wheels too’. Oh, how I can relate! And wow, what an idea, I love those die cut results! Apparently I habitually throw away too much treasure. From now on, when I throw something like that instead of finding a spot to collect it and use in the future, at least I will register some guilt. 😊
Ive been doing this for years now, I use 99% isopropyl alcohol... and a tub, from the dollar store... that my sheets of paper fit in.... and I use cheap markers... brand new, for best color... and voila, I have beautifully colored papers in my journals..I used little spray bottles and sprayed it on... and yes, I did it outside.. . I can color coordinate everything in it... and I use a sheet at the end, to mop up the colored juice in bottom of my tub when I am done each color... No waste :)) I place stencils on them as they dry, so they form patterns... easy peasy!! :)) Miss Natasha, there was no fails in those ones you made, everything was gorgeous!!! Add some black stamping... etc... they were all quite nice !! there was nothing there I didnt like!!
I am soooo happy to find something to do with all of those dry markets! Your papers/tags/creations were all lovely! Thank you!! I got many good ideas. Now I know why I have been saving cereal box bags. 😂
Wow that's a brilliant idea! I'll collect my markers from now on and ask my daughter to keep my granddaughters markers, she goes through so many! I wish I knew more about die-cutting, I will try to find a video, I know nothing about it! It's so tempting to learn and get one!
Hello Natasha, another awesome and frugal recycling idea. Color theory or not, you still knocked this one out of the park. I'm curious, but did you try any of this on cardstock? I'll definitely keep this for the future, because currently I have more dried out water based markers than alcohol markers. Anyway, you've given me some ideas to try out. Thanks for taking the time to share your creative ideas. I'd love to have a neighbor like you. Take care young lady and God bless you and yours. Sincerely Becky B from Arkansas
I love the first one you did that black and pink. I also made these awhile a go with dried up markers. I had purged the house and found a bag of dried up markers. Thanks for the tips and tricks. You can also mist it with plain alcohol and then dab with a paper towel and you'll have light, white spots and some more movement mixing.
Wow!!! How cool is this! Another great and fun idea!! And darn, I just recycled a big bag of the grandkids dried up markers after their visit this summer. Guess it’s time to go through my craft markers and highlighters😉. What a fun and easy idea. Never thought of taking them apart like this. Thanks so much, Natasa! Your papers turned out so pretty! Thanks for sharing the ideas on how to use them also. Love all the ideas and die cuts. ❤️

Thank god something uk 🇬🇧 Ireland.Scotland and Wales all have this.whoopy . Its so hard here in uk 🇬🇧 as craft shops only sell expensive kits example embroidery kits.art kit just a picture enough paint to do one.etc kids not many do craft as you cant get cheaper paint etc.even in our pound shops not a pound anymore your lucky to get cheap felt tips .at least now you can browse on internet.thank you great tutorial.i sugested to a crafter in america today to look at yours.i hope i didnt offend her art of junk journels.i simply wanted her to be inspired with your talent.im crafter but dont do a channel but i have learnt alot from you thank you for inspiring me uk
I love experiments like this. Try using a few drops of brass, then when you lay photo paper on top use a braver and run it over the back. Then “peel” the paper back slow slow slowly, stop And restart. Some of my most beautiful papers have been made this way. PS it works well with acrylic paints too.
Maybe on the simple paper, before putting the color on it it would be a good idea a layer of gesso to avoid the double colored side, this just in case the other side want to be used differently, and to reinforce the paper. Just an idea. Needless to say you have all is needed to be creative, you make beautiful things out of nothing 🥰🎨 thank you for sharing!
I laughed so hard at your orange "hairball", lol. That was funny. I did this back when pandemic had started and I couldn't find any kind of rubbing alcohol anywhere. Hubby spent 4 dollars on a bottle for me. Good grief he would die if had to spend that now.
First time watching you. You are actually entertainingly funny. Not only I learned plenty, I thoroughly enjoyed your sense of humor! Thank you for the laughs!
Great presentation! You unexpectedly made me laugh out loud a couple times - like my mom used to do when she (very uncharacteristically) uttered an English swear word in her heavy Dutch accent ;)
Glad I save my ordinary face serum bottles! Now I need to start saving markers. Re staining glass, I faux stained my front door and it’s subtle but beautiful!
I use a blower tool by tim holtz because you definitely don’t want to breath in threw the straw, only out. The reason to use watercolour paper or photo paper is for the movement, so after you drop your drops onto the paper you then can drop alcohol on top for movement or more alcohol inks too. Your plain paper looked lovely but you can’t get the movement that way because it absorbs the colour. You can alcohol ink metal, glass vases, etc....nothing that you drink/eat off or out of. Lastly when you kept dropping the colours onto your smooshing mat, each colour kept reactivating the colours underneath it therefore making a whole different colour. Also with already made alcohol inks you need to seal it so the colour doesn’t fade but I’m sure making your own this way that may not happen because they’re markers...not sure. And the last thing off the top of my head is....you totally can use plain paper if you seal it with gesso or something like that, another thing you may want to try. Looks like you had a blast figuring lots out and they sure all look lovely! Thanks for your wonderful videos as always. Hugs from Ontario. Hope some of my ideas/advise are things that help you. None at all were meant to be rude, just to help you out. I’m sure you knew all of them just forgot to mention because it’s hard to remember to mention everything in your time. ;) all the best.
Exquisite and so thrifty. Here I've been removing ink from my clothes with the alcohol and paper towels. Why is it I never knew about this genius my dear!! Be safe💕🐞 Namaste 🥰
I used pure crystal violet stain, that we use in our lab to stain blood smears, in spray bottle they gave me great prints...I let my grandkids help, properly masked n gloved, they had a blast making designs of all the stains we use in the lab...
Great idea, I will do this from now on. I always feel guilty about throwing out old pens. It also inspired me to look for a recycling place to take my pens and found one 👍.
Thanks for the reminder that methylated spirits is alcohol. When I was a kid back in the fifties my Mum used to clean the school at Woombye and I used to go with her and there was an old man who used to hang around the school and drink metho as we called it. Great ideas using old markers to make alcohol ink. Thanks!
I've done lots of fun art with alcohol ink. If you use the back of the photo paper with the ink and spray a little 99% alcohol onto the ink it will bloom. You can then move the ink while wet all around with a blow dryer or air artist brush. You can then doodle on them, etc...just have fun with it.
This is a wonderful way to use something that would otherwise be thrown out. If you put some scrunched, painted tissue paper, or a piece of aluminium foil that has been scrunched up and then opened out again behind the sticky side of the acetate piece, it may be easier to use, you can seal it with a thin layer of glue, or an acrylic medium that dries clear and use it as a layering piece. I made some cards that way a while ago, it works well with rubber stamps on acetate as well.
i cannot believe that the only thing i threw out last week was markers that did not work! I dont even know what prompt me to test them! I am devestated. Your tutorial is amazing Natasa!
This is great. I’ve been holding on to plain photo paper and you’ve given me the perfect thing to do with them. Plus the tutorial for homemade ink is amazing. 😊 I’m currently working on two bachelors degrees and have been throwing out all my dried up highlighters. 😮 I won’t be doing that anymore. 😉
Oh what a fantastic idea to use the pill bottles to create the ink in then store in a more permanent container later. I'm putting that one in my idea box as I collect up my old markers.
Good idea, just PLEASE make sure the caps don't leak!! I suggest putting it or them ( bottles) in a well sealed bag or storage container to be safe plus aide in not drying out? 🤗🙋🏻♀️
Oh I totally agree and have some smaller glass bottles with droppers on them as well as some small spray bottles I purchased to use for essential oils and witch hazel to make fragrances. So I'm sure they would work very well.
Good Day Natasa!! W@W!!! BRILLIANT PROJECT (S)! I happen to have some glossy 4 x 6 photo cards I'd been planning to experiment with using regular drawing or writing inks, but as yet not gotten around to! Then,, I had been saving some dried out markers thinking how could I revive them over the years and THAT too went on the back burner..UNTIL * NOW*!!! HUGS & KISSES THANKS!! 👍🙏🎨✍🌹💐🎶! I can't wait to do this! By the way, those two tags you deemed ' fails' , look AWESOME imho!!! All came out grest!! Wish I had a die cut machine or access, but maybe someday. School library has some but geared to kids and they ( dies) are too large for the 4x6 sizes. I so enjoy you animated dialogue and outlook on your creative process! Have a Blessed Day, Every Day!! 💖 🙋🏻♀️ Mindi USA.
@Vicky-Maree Wurst.. Hi Vicky! Do you know of any sites that show how? I know there are hand embossing tools, like brass templates that you can hand emboss.. I'm looking to heat emboss and wonder what best products are..? I bought a clear Stamp pad from Hobby Lobby and it didn't work! Unless it was the emboss powder.. All that stuff So Pricey, and some so shoddy.. I'm going to try adding watered down vegetable glycerin to the ink pad and see.saw that on RU-vid for hand lettering ( with nib)embossing..Cool! Thanks and Happy Crafting Bliss! 🤗🙋🏻♀️🙏 - Mindi

Yeah that’s unfortunate that the stamp pad didn’t work 🥴😔 can you take it back & tell them? I’ve heard the same about vegetable glycerin too. I Google in RU-vid by putting DIY in front of what I like to find out about, soooooo many hours have gone into watching. I’ve now got in my notes on my phone, a folder for favorites so I can go back over the ideas, techniques & tips that I get a lot out of. Happy crafting 🫶🦋
This is such a neat project idea! And a great way to really use up the entire marker. I will mention to pay attention to what brands of markers you use though, as some can be refilled and reused. Copic is an example of that. So it's more of a waste to destroy the marker if it dries out, because you can keep using it by replacing the ink. (And you can always use Copic or other refill inks with different brands. So make sure you REALLY won't be reusing the marker before you destroy them!)
Thank you for this idea… when working with photo paper and alcohol inks, try working on the opposite side of the photo paper. It has a more wax feel to it and it allows for the ink to move better 😉🤗
Nice ! I bought such inks in a very low price shop and I am glad that I can reuse their bottles. These inks had glitter too. Something I will add to my DIY inks.
I'm watching this late at night and laughing out loud "What did you THINK was going to happen?" ha ha ha..25:11 (I talk to myself the same way)...This was a lot of fun and very useful! Going to stop throwing away those dried up markers. Love the way you process things, and always clearly demonstrated and explained. Thank you.
