Something not many target tutorials mention, crossbows. I hunt with both, compound and crossbow. This target 100% stops a 405 feet per second crossbow. The bolt only went half way in. My 70lb compound arrow went about a quarter of the way. I found my plastic wrap from Sam's club, for those needing ideas.
Thanks for pointing that comparison out! You really get out of this what you put in it, literally! If you pack it tight enough it'll stop anything you want to throw at it. If you go at it half-heartedly, it won't stop anything. You can't go until you run out of plastic wrap and assume its good enough - you have to keep stuffing until there is truly no more room inside. I've also had people tell me they laid a ratchet strap around the inside and used that to compress the packing as a last step before sealing in up.
@@GunflintDesigns since initially posting my comment I've come across another extra (ish) step. Make sure you really pack every possible area on the first few layers. I was lazy and just stuffed it in. The center was beautifully packed but the bottom corners had some soft spots. Basically, take a few extra seconds to make sure it's actually packed and there aren't any voids. My buddy stripped the fletching off his bolt because of it. So I unpacked and repacked. Hands down, this is the winning formula for a home made, large target. I've already got plans to improve when I make a new target. Thank you again for posting this idea, I probably wouldn't have made it so nicely and as easily as I did with out this template.
@boblong6759 do you know why they don't mention crossbows? If it stops a compound bow the crossbow bolt is a no brainer shooting an 18 to 20in bolt that doesn't have the mass of an arrow. 20yds they penatation is the same 30yds and farther the crossbows really start to lack in penatation do to mass weight.
Finishing up the animated 3D model in the next few days. Then the files will be shipped off to the art director for layout design, and the step by step text will go out to a proofreader. Once those files get assembled and returned, it's over to the board of directors for up to 6 weeks for final approval. I'll post an update when it's ready.
For those worried about the tools, I used a hand saw and an electric drill i got from LIDL and it worked just fine. Yes, I also used a screwdriver. Yes, you should own a screwdriver. What kind of adult doesn't own a set of screwdrivers?
Dude, I laughed a lot at the tool commentary! Hilarious! I’ve seen those comments on other videos and I’ve never understood why people are so obsessed with being outraged about something so silly! I’ve always used videos and plans that require tools I don’t have as the reason to save up and purchase the tool. It ALWAYS makes more sense to spend money on a tool that I can use for the item that I’m building and then also use for a billion other projects as time goes on as opposed to spending money on an item that I can build that will undoubtedly not be as good or last as long as the one that I can build to suit my exact needs and that I will ensure is perfect. I’ve never gotten pissed off at a content creator that is spending his time and money to help me figure out how to do something because he has more tools than I do!! Good lord!!! Good project man. Thanks!!
Of all the DIY archery-target videos I've watched, this is unquestionably one of-if not THE-best. I obviously don't know the idiots who complained about your use of tools in the first version, but they probably weren't breast-fed properly by their mothers, and they need to get into psychotherapy without delay. Here's another good source of "stuffing": These days, every boat yard and boat dealer shrink-wraps its boats, whether new or used. And every year, that shrink-wrap gets pulled off and discarded. This is an environmental disaster in every respect, but it provides DIY target makers with a virtually unlimited supply of free stuffing. In addition, the plastic shrink-wrap "film" is heavy enough to use as a target face. In fact, you can wrap the whole target with it to fend off the effects of rain and/or snow.. Best, Chris (in Maine)
Man that's a great resource that I hadn't thought of. I'm about ready to build a second one of these for my yard, and now I will be running by the boat store here in town very soon.
I think you did an excellent job on this video. Not to complicated. Cheat. Direct and to the point. Nicely done. I would say you should do more videos. Your a natural. 👊👍☺
Thanks for this video bro I’m 18 and I built a great one for free with a bit of my old man’s help with just a handsaw and old electric drill and some screws and some old sheets and old blankets and gardening straw and of course good old duct tape it works super well and did in a days work thanks for the video mate much love from Australia 🇦🇺 🍻😉 getting some good archery practice in homie
Awesome video I was wanting to build a good durable Target seen lots of videos but this is the best one out there. Plus easy enough for my boy to help build it.
I liked it a lot! And being that you were pleasing the trolls, I liked it even more!😂👍 Okay okay….I had to add even more compliments. The voice over of the trolls “but mark, the staple gun makes 4 tools!?” SO GOOD…pure gold!🤣
Thanks for the idea on the archery target!! Great design! I’ve been using a cardboard box and plastic bags stuffed in it. I’m definitely going to use your design!!
Loved this. We've recycle old commercial targets with used coffee bean shipping gunny sacks. I think it's time to find a fiber feed sack to put around these at this point and maybe stuff a little more plastic fiber around them...just to keep them going for another decade...
I remember that day I got my first bow. I was excited to shoot something and made a target at home from old cardboard boxes and compressed left over newspaper stacks with varying levels of compression. Changed the tips by cutting an eraser into six pieces so the papers would soak up the blunt hit. This way the shaft would last longer and the impact damage is absorbed completely by the newspapers. And it feels safe enough. I made some for my friends as well. I like your design and material choice. I'll try and find it locally! As for monsoon, wrapping it around in plastic should do the trick.
I really want to thank you for this video. I made one and it is just about done, I need to put some more plastic in to stop arrows. The only things I’ve had to pay for is the OSB board, paint and screws. Once again I would like to thank you and God bless you for your video.
Challenge accepted!! I found 4 places to exclaim “but Mark! Not everyone has ___” (only in jest) - brownie batter paint - rabbits to hide underneath the target -dogs to chase said rabbits -or a archery setup at all to use on the target. I watch (both channels of yours and the the WBAT guys) not because I have a woodworking hobby, but because I secretly want one :-) great video
Next time, I think you should use a hand saw, hand drill, screw driver, and tacks. LOL Great video! I liked the first one too. Keep thee videos coming.
I'll have to make hundreds of these just to demonstrate everybody's personal tool availability. CNC & Welder. Hand Saw and Hammer. Lightsaber and Silly Putty. The list is endless!
Best Buy dumpsters supply my archery needs. I drive by after work, and they have every size of clean cardboard boxes, plastic bubble wrap, cardboard inserts to fill the boxes.
Two tools! But the lawn tractor counts, right?😂 Great vid. I actually use a version of this as a back drop for an archery target that was gifted to me. This will definitely last longer than the target!!
Having done many Butts in a similar fashion, I can only suggest one addition. Treat (paint and seal) your timber for external use. I now (since 2007) use a wool pack (bale bag) and the same filling in a very old wool bale press (circa 1913) to compress it. No wood at all, and it gives me 6 target faces that I can move with one hand. Bale pack $17 AUD ($11 US) ... Press $25 AUD 🤣
I just built something very similar to this with the Third Hand Archery target skins. My 5mm Victory arrows zip through to the fletching and I have ripped several fletchings off. I used the same plastic and pallet wrap but still can't get it to stop my 490 grain arrows out of my 70# Mathews at 275fps. I'll repack it today but any advice would be appreciated.
Man I'm sorry your's has been eating your arrows. I shoot Gold Tip Pierces - 475 grains at 280fps and they only go in 4-6 inches. There is some sort of evil void I can't seem to fix toward the bottom of mine. All I can say is pack, pack and pack. It takes 3-4 times as much material as you think it should. I'm roughly 170lbs, and if I stand on the stuff and it moves at all, then I pack more in. You could try laying a ratchet strap in the frame before you fill it, then use that to compress everything.
Elk hunting for sport or meat or both? Great video. I had one made of straw but its super heavy especially when it rains (just a frame around 2 rectangular shaped bales of hay. Not enclosed. I like your design.
6 months ago I couldn't have afforded to build this. I'm surprised how quickly it dropped back down here - one day I woke up and prices were just normal again. Hopefully that happens for you soon!
How about stuffing the target with cardboard? I have access to a lot of it and wondering how that would hold up. I know weather would be a bigger issue with cardboard but we don't get any rain out here in the desert.
Mark, I'm only 3 min in and I see you've used 4 tools as yet.. Driver, Tape Measure, Pencil, Saw.... LIES SO MANY LIES!! ha ha as I type you're yelling at me for pointing this out! I like it Mark, I may have to build one now that I know I can do it without $5,000,000,000 worth of tools!
It’s hard to believe that any outdoors men would have difficulty to understand your project no matter how many tools u have. ? 2 U would the mat that underlines carpet be a good filler. Thanks Tim
Just wanted to say that I'm looking for a channel that will show me how to make this using a cnc and laser. Maybe throw some metal CNC in for hand-made nails or screws? If the shop of the creator is less than 200k, I'm not sure I'll watch. :-) (I listen to the podcast)
Wait, why wouldn’t people get upset that a person with a woodworking channel has woodworking tools to create their woodworking projects 🤦♂️. Can’t please some people I guess…too bad you couldn’t find a way to use a domino jointer, I hear that really pisses idiots off 🤣
Sure you made the target with 2 tools but how can a normal person make those nice round target circle stencils without a million dollar laser cutter.... total clickbait.... 😀
@@GunflintDesigns Whining isn't a joke, it's just annoying to anyone watching videos. As a content creator, who should want people to subscribe....being aware of this will only help you.
Geez...a tape measure, a drill, a saw, a pencil, a speed square (just because you made it, doesn't mean it's not a tool 😑), a staple gun, a box cutter, a work bench, a cardboard stencil (once again, it's still a tool even if you made it 😑), a paint roller... 🤦♂️ ...I mean, you might as well have used a bobcat and a sign crane and a helicopter and a backhoe!?! 🙄 It's as if you think that we all live in our own tool outlet store!?! 🔨🪚😐🔧📐Guess I'll just have to keep target practicing on Neighbor Rick's lawn furniture, since I don't have $30,000 worth of tools at my disposal!!! 🤷♂️ Thanks a lot yo............for nothing! P.s. 😂😉😂
2 tools? Saw Impact driver Driver bit Pencil Tape measure Hands Work bench Staple gun Blade Brain Sorry. Couldn’t resist. I remember your first one. This is a great version 2
Man, your commentary is bliss! I agree with the fact that if you are watching this video because it says “free” then you either received a free bow or possibly using a cattail bow and river birch twig as an arrow. A wise man once said, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Great video and happy hunting!
Or some people get something handed down or they find it and are trying to accomplish their goal. Just because they are not experienced, doesnt mean they should be mislead. Thats what annoys people. When you see that, youre gonna watch it and have wasted time.
Late to the party, but finally watched! Such a cool idea and video , but next time can you show us how to make it with just a pair of scissors and a soup spoon...thanks!
Love the petty jokes 🤣🤣🤣 people really can’t think for themselves. If y’all don’t even have a saw, most hardware stores will cut the 2x4s and sheeting material for free :)
for those that need an even cheaper option. 2, 2x4x10-$9.32 4, 1/2" carriage bolts, hex nuts and washers-$12.20 and then all those amazon, and pizza boxes you have because we all know you're poor for some reason - free. if you don't actually have any, just go to any restaurant and ask them if you can have all their boxes from the day, regardless it's free. you don't really need to get it super thick, maybe 4 boxes thick maybe more. cut out 4, 4" pieces. you can use a hack saw or a power saw, doesn't matter. and you should now have 4, 4" boards and 2, 2" boards. stack the 4" boards evenly ontop of each other. using a 5/8 drill bit drill a hole through all 4 boards at the top and bottom, if it doesnt reach all the way through, don't fret, just take off one board and drill in the same spots again, keep doing this until it's drilled all the way through. drill 2 screws each into 2 of the 4" boards into the middle of the 2" boards. now you have the feet. take your boxes, stack them onto the 4" boards that are attached to the feet. put your carriage bolts through the holes. put the other 4" boards onto the carriage bolt. put the washers on and then the hex nuts. tighten the hex nuts all the way down. don't stop tightening until you've gotten it as tight as you can. congratulations you've got a target the is less than $25. you don't have to replace anything except the things that came to you free, ie the boxes.
You know, it would have been way easier to make if you had used all of those nice tools you have in your shop.😂 Oh, by the way, the type of material you used on the surface is called woven poly propylene (WPP for short). It is comonly used for farm animal feed bags. Good video.
Excellent target. I cut up a former billboard made of corrugated plastic sheeting for the target surface and used sheep wool to fill the box with. Most farmers in NZ are happy to give sheep wool away these days because it has very little value. Target functions perfectly and makes a satisfying "thwock" sound each time an arrow hits it. It will be interesting to see how long the plastic sheeting lasts. So far, it's holding up well.
If only I had a cordless tools like that I bet I could make stuff like this too. 😁🎯🎯🎯 🦌🐐🦃 Great video Mark. Really looking forward to some great content on the New Old channel.
It is crazy that you had to make this video in response to people who couldn't figure that the best tool for the job is always the tool you have. Surely people that cannot figure how to improvise, on such a simple thing, should not be in charge of Archery equipment.
Man that’s a great part of the world! I lived in the Cody/Powell area for 10 years. Unfortunately, my wife got homesick and we ended up moving back to southern Minnesota a few years ago.
He will never cease to amaze me how coddled trolls have no ability to see past the end of their nose let alone think outside of the box. But then again I graduated in '94 and right before I graduated they stopped teaching and reinforcing critical thinking. If you tried it they told you you're thinking too much, and yes that is a personal experience I had in high school.
