Found out after a long delay last time I flew, that they use induction loops to find metal at ground level (which suddenly fell into place when I thought about it.) If you know of an airport with check in/security on a concrete floor, you'll be able to see a large 'loop' of what appears to be discoloured concrete, it's actually the cut they made into the ground for the loop, and refractory sealant on top. And damn, they are great for finding metal at least. but I do wonder sometimes about ceramic knives, glass fiber nylon, flint etc etc. There are far more crazy people with spare time than good guys with spare skills
