How many Board Feet of Hickory did you need to make that Bar Cabinet ?

Beautiful build! I like how the lift makes cabinet more practical as you don't have too deep cabinet meaning the bottles in the back would be harder to reach. Great solution! That continuous grain in front is on 🔥🔥🔥
@M19pickles

Great build! Love the clean look of it. If I ever end up building a bar like this I would probably include some kind of a rail for the hidden bottles as I would probably nock bottles over with out one. I would also use hidden hinges in part because I hate the look of hinges. Then I would probably have it so that the switch to raise the shelf is based on the arrangement of items on the top surface using either some reed switches or RFID tags because I like the idea of a secret combo to get to the bottles.

It must be something with the trade. I almost expected you to yell "IT IS ALIVE!" when you hit the actuator button a couple times there. About 20 years ago I took on a bathroom install for a guy in his basement. Where the toilet was to be at the time was a 6 inch steel pipe rising out of the floor that had been capped off with news paper followed by concrete to seal it from gases until the time when the home owner got around to doing this. I didn't know it at the time but another guy he asked about it said "You're going to need a plumber" after a few moments of silence before. I didn't have an angle grinder yet I had a Roto-Zip with a right angle grinder attachment. Loud and sparky, I was doing the Tim Allen grunting thing when the home owner came down to look as I cut it about 1/4 inch above the concrete to accommodate the tile I was putting in. I got a lot of work from that guy and referrals too. Working down there I found he had a drainage problem where a sump pump ejected up top outside just to run back in because it wasn't directed away from the house. It hadn't rained in how long I thought as I heard the pump kick in a few times. Now when I get the tip of my tongue sticking out the side of my mouth I might be heard talking to myself when somebody sneaks up. Not so much because there's no radio playing at the time I'm sure. More to crystallize my thoughts I tell them. An intelligent conversation maybe and yes, I do listen. What ever it is I consider it part of the process along with ribald language that comes out when things are more challenging. Having done work on million dollar houses and coming up with solutions like how to form trim on a window that a contractor forgot using some extra pieces of metal from a Viking Range and a couple 2x4's. Repairing a broken window closer from a teenager sneaking out at night or replacing die electric unions on a water heater that weren't tightened down right to begin with as the owner wants to close on the La Salle St. condo that day. It's a great thing to like your work. Oh and by the way, AWESOME JOB ON THAT BAR! And thanks for the lead on that actuator.😁👍

Drill technology is great for CNC since it takes simple tools, which I have done in steel. In wood, dowels were the cheapest option in my early days, '88. The big drawback is that it's weak. In my opinion dovetails and hand-cut joints are the one-off, artsy things. Domino or homemade dominos are so 2022.

I'm thinking of making this, but I wonder if 1/2" plywood could be used to lighten it. Would this change any of the other dimensions? I'm trying to work through the size of the opening for the lift shelf, and I'm not sure I'm getting it right without a putting everything into Sketchup. Can you tell me if this would work without modifying anything?

What a beautiful bar cabinet! I recently purchased your plans for my on build. In the plans you state that there are two 1/4" x 1 1/2" dowels used and to drill/dry fit them prior to assembly. As I watch your video, I can see where some of the dowel holes go but not all. Would it be possible to send an additional plan detailing all the dowel hole locations?

hey april, cool stuff, BTW how did you set the upper limits to match the bottom section of the movable cabinet with the top of the table , is it by manually adjusting the height of the panel or is there any other method of setting the heights?

Two simple questions if you don't mind. #1 at 10:05 you said it was a simple fix to stop the "rubbing" in your test. What was the simple fix? Did you just sand down the side that was rubbing? Or did you reposition the hardware in some way? #2 at 15:24 you had to adjust the "hungry hippo" out a little bit so the doors closed flush. The thing that always trips me up when I do that is the screw hole! You have to re-screw the hippo in just a tiny bit but how did you stop the screw from just going into the old hole? Did you fill it in before adjusting? I'm definitely not as experienced as you and it's always these little details that trip me up at the end.

I watched a fellow truck driver take the mahogany planking out of scrap 42 foot cabin cruiser that had dry rot in the bottom [ he got 3 boats free] the marina wanted rid of them] he sanded the wood down and cut it up and built the most beautiful kitchen cupboards you ever seen about 10 coats of clear varnish on them , best part out side of time and hardwear and other things he had nothing tied up in the wood so never look at a big cabin cruiser as nothing more as junk or fire wood!

I don't think that it is appreciated enough at how near perfect your measurements are. Wood only cooperates occasionally, in being perfect for a build. But only if your measurements are near perfect. And yes, adjustments can be made, but they take time. As a young woman in the 80's, I worked in a custom cabinet shop for a couple years. I was a newbie and had never built a thing. The owner did all the math, and faces. Gave us a list to cut the rest and put together. It was dirty, time consuming, repetitious, but it was great. The sanding, alone, was enough to drive me crazy. I worked for same guy again in 2008 for about a year. My biggest peeve was when his brother would work with us and do the measurements. If I have seen one off-center sink or door, I have seen a hundred. That did make me crazy and still does. I have seen off-center sinks, either from the doors, or the kitchen window, even in cabinet adverts and videos. There are some reasons for it, but not usually. Your liquor cabinet is perfectly beautiful. You are a great craftsman. I have a very old, very huge, oak teachers desk that once had a projection screen modified into it some years ago. But they just left the cut out open. I am going to attempt something similar to modify it for a tv. Thank you.
