DIY Belt Replacement Marantz PMD 430

This is a short video walk through of how to replace the belts on a Marantz PMD 430.
This is arguably one of the best cassette players out there and if you can get them in good shape, you're lucky! Sometimes you can find one cheap because someone thinks it's busted, but all it needs is a belt replacement. There is no good reason why you should pass up a deal when you can fix it yourself!

Thanks for the video -- I have a CP430 which is the same player but for EU region I believe. I've replaced my belts once before but this video will definitely come in handy if I need to do it again. By the way, have you ever noticed an issue with your PMD430 with cheaper cassettes where the tape seems to drift upwards between the pinch roller and the capstan? It was what compelled me to replace the belts and pinch roller in my unit in the first place but the issue still occurs. I have a feeling that the combination of the very thin capstan on the Marantz and the crappy material used on cheaper tape is causing the issue. Better quality tapes don't seem to have the issue.
@User173

I've not noticed that, no. perhaps clean the pinch roller with rubber restorer? that might help it to run more smoothly.

Great walkthrough, thanks for sharing! Do you guys know if the Marantz PMD430 has 'bias (or plug in) power' to internally feed a minijack condenser microphone (which needs a voltage between 2v and 10v to operate)? Shall I look for a portable external DC battery to chain between the mic and the Marantz to operate such microphones?

What a great video, my old unit has the following issue: when a tape stops playing whenever the counter is enabled. If I press on the reset button thereby disabling the counter the tape plays flawlessly. Does the counter use a belt? Would changing all belts help resolve the issue?
@User173
@User173 4 года назад
The counter uses gears from one of the belts to convert the speed to the right speed. No harm in opening it up and taking a peak, make sure everything is as it should be. perhaps a gear is broken or stripped or something.

Hello! Thanks so much for this video! I have a question if you don't mind! I replaced the belts on my PMD222 (with this vid thanks!) - but my tape is still getting eaten --- do you know what might cause this?
@User173
@User173 4 года назад
Hi there Erin, I'm happy I could help with the belts! The tapes being eaten can be a couple of things. It depends on the type of tape you are using in it. First, are you using a tape loop by any chance? Sometimes home made tape loops have too much slack and can become problematic. If it is a regular tape, then have you tried cleaning the Capistan and pinch roller? you can use rubbing alcohol on the capistan but NOT on the pinch roller. Rubber will crack eventually with rubbing alcohol so you need to get rubber restorer and cleaner. That is something you can use to clean the pinch roller. Sometimes residue builds up on the pinch roller and causes the tape to stick to it and it gets eaten. Another problem is if the belts are too tight and the pinch roller is pressing too hard against the capistan, it can then also eat the tape, but that is less likely as I am sure you followed my instructions and got the correct belts. Let me know if this helps, if not, feel free to contact me again here, and we can exchange info and maybe I can help you out via Zoom or something. Let me know!

@User173
@User173 5 лет назад
Not with the 360, but I imagine if you open it up, it's similar to the video I've got here. I think the first thing to look at if the FF and REW aren't working are the mechanisms that engage when you press FF and REW. However, there is ONE belt that is engaged when FF and REW are pressed, and so I'd imagine that belt is broken or too loose. I would def open it up and follow this video for advice on organization and take photos so you can put it back together. Keep little bags that are labled to put various screws in. You can get the new belts from vintageelectronics dot net.

Hi there. First up, I want to say thank you, your videos have helped me on a few occasions now. I'm hoping you might be able to help me again. I've got a Marantz pmd101, and today it's just started to make a buzzing kind of farting noise through the speaker and headphones when I press play, even if there's no tape in it. When there is a tape in, I can just hear it playing behind the noise. It was working fine last night, I was recording some loops on it, but this morning it's started making this noise. I have no clue what it could be so, I'm wondering if you might have any ideas? Many thanks, Chris
@User173
@User173 3 года назад
wow, that's a new one. the sound your hearing could be due to a blown capacitor, but it could be several other things. I've heard noisy outputs and that generally is a ground problem, so you might check out that all the grounds are secure and didn't somehow get disconnected. best thing to start with is open it up and do a really solid visual inspection. I find that by cleaning it after opening it, it helps me to see things more clearly since you're focusing on spots to clean and therefore being a bit more methodical as you inspect. look for any cold solder joints, etc. you might start with a sniff test too. burnt components have a carbon smell. maybe you get lucky and can find a component that might be faulty.
