Great birdfeeder idea, and a wonderful way to craft a birdfeeder using a plastic milk-jug. Real recycling at its best. The birds seemed to love it, even a couple of perching sticks for them to set & stay a while during their visit to the feeder. I'm sure you got some great pictures.
Nice idea BUT it needs a weight of some sort to keep it from swaying all over the place especially during strong winds. The Smart squirrell will find a way to get to the feeder and EMPTY it out in a heartbeat. Notice also how difficult it was for the birds to balance themselves in order to feed. Rain will ruin the feed as it will get in. Mildew is a major issue in most bird feeders unless you get a very good one that is also squirrel proof that WORK and will keep them from eating ALL the feed. It just needs some modification!! There are feeders that ARE squrriell proof as I have purchased 2 and THEY WORK!!! NO MORE ROBBERS at my feeders anymore. If you have many squirrels, then just provide separate feeders for them that are a good distance from the bird feeder and they will not feed from the other one. This works !! When they realize that they cannot get to the squirrel proof feeder they will STOP. I made my purchase at Walmart for the squirrel proof one. WORTH THE PRICE. Hope this helps. Thanks for your idea !
wow you really have a good wildlife around your yard if the squirrel came in < 1 hour and the bluejays showed up shortly after. Usually when I have set out a new feeder, it might take a few weeks before the birds notice and start coming often enough that I can see them when I peep outside (meaning they might have come, but it's so quick and rare that I didn't know they are visiting it yet) Twine or some other rope might break eventually, though, so this project will be good with some other stronger string to hold up to the weather or the animals.
The four windows are too low. At least one more inch higher is better. Cant hold much bird feed. Birds will finish it in no time. You have to keep filling it often!
I like big fancy bird feeders the solve your squirrel problem all you need to do is that cayenne pepper and Hot Chili Pepper to the bird feed mix it up it will not harm the birds the squirrels and all unwanted Critters don't like it because it's too hot for them to eat it and they will leave your bird feeder alone
